I want Sten to return as the new Arishok but what if you let the Arishok leave with Isabela in DA2, then Sten would just be the same Sten from DA:O

Given how the Arishok of DAII failed to retain the Tome of Koslun and/or Isabela if that path was chosen -- the veracity of the rumor being unknown -- I surmise that he's just getting too old for this **** and he's going to retire, because he was older then we thought he was.

According to the comic, the Qunari did eventually get the book back AND Izzy eventually wound up both A.) free and B.) bookless, with the old Arishok dead.  How exactly this happened if Hawke didn't kill the Arishok is open to speculation, but it's not canon-busting either way.

It is canon-busting in some people's games for Sten to be alive--his codex entry states quite clearly that he doesn't survive if you leave him in Lothering, plus I believe it's possible to kill him in Haven if he challenges you.  So supposedly he really, truly, no-kidding can die.

Granted they could just hire a second voice actor, do a second body model, and have almost exactly the same interactions if the new Arishok shows up in a future game.  Hell, it's even possible that this hypothetical non-Sten new Arishok knows the Warden if your Warden is still running around somewhere.  Seheron or Par Vollen would be a great place to hide out if you were looking to vanish--provided you could convince the Qunari to leave you be.

Wait what? Sten changed his lot in life? Can Qunari do that?

He moved up within the same caste(which they can do). They can't switch castes/roles. I don't think he actively sought out promotion though.

This is true; contrary to what some believe, Qunari are quite capable of moving upward or downward within their caste; thus the mastery of which the Aristok spoke of. They aren't stuck in one job for the rest of their lives, if they become good at something, they are moved into a position to maximize that skill within the bounds of their respective caste. They can't move into the roles of other castes, but each caste has a diverse range of jobs they can choose or aspire for.

Do qunari aspire or have ambitions?

They're still humans, elves, kossith, dwarves, and etc. (aka. thinking beings) aren't they? Although in the Qunari case, they're still expected to excell at their given tasks regardless of what motivation they use. Like the Aristok said: "They are free to choose within that role. To accept and succeed, or deny and die. Glory is clear and defined."

As long as you have the "right" aspiration or ambitions, it is within the bounds of the Qun.

Well their culture is highly collectivist as opposed to individualist. They don't have anything saying ambition is wrong/bad as far as we know, but have we ever seen an ambitious Qunari(one actively seeking promotion or self-aggrandizement)?

To be frank, we've only seen one aspect of the Qunari so far; most of it at the edge of the sword. The only Qunari we've spoke with seriously in-game are already at relatively desirable positions. They have a sense of honor, it can be expected that there would be some that would seek that honor.

As they say in-game, the only way to understand the Qunari is to go to one of their settlements, which we have not as of yet. Until we interact with a Qunari settlement, we wouldn't understand the whole picture.

No and no, actually.

His codex says that he most likely died. And the Warden can never go back to Lothering ever to see.

And you can't kill him in Haven. Ever. You can send him off into the world on his own, but you can't kill him.

I'm not surprised by the posts by those who don't like Sten and its perfectly understandable. His initial impression on the player is not the greatest but for those who stuck with him and discovered all those wonderful moments in conversations, party banter, and (for me) him yelling epic Qunari battlecries (not all of them understandable, but epic nonetheless), you can get attached to the guy.
*DA:Origins spoilers*
The definitive moment for me was in my first time through DA:O and my reaction to Sten's epilogue after taking the Ultimate Sacrifice which, I must admit, made me truly sad:
"Sten bowed once before the Warden's remains and then left without saying a word...When fellow Qunari asked if there were worthy people outside of Par Vallon, Sten answered that in all his travels he had only met a single one."

Okay, thats enough of me being a softee. Off to go bash things with big swords n things.

I was being a little sarcastic on Sten. I still like him, I just want the option to slap my companions around when they don't approve of my authority over them. Former or current companions. I'm absolute and yes my ego is that big on my PC.

I know somebody on the DA team shares my sentiment. Right? Right?

It looks like in the preview to the new comic, that Sten/Arishok is holding Asala in his hand, no? Could just be another sword I suppose. Still, he looks pretty awesome

I want to see Sten (or Arishok) but ...I'm not sure it's gonna be friendly . :s

We know the Qunari plan on attacking the human lands for some times now , even if Sten is sort of open minded , I don't think he wants the Qunari to turn into hippies.

Both time when we have the option to become friendly with Qunari , it was because they almost had no choice about the situation they were in.
Sten was alone and without his sword couldn't get back home.
The arishok was stuck in a city full of human , and couldn't get back home neither.

What's gonna be the reason for qunari to be friendly this time?
In DA3 it seems like humans are in the middle of a giant mess , so the qunari have a great opportunity to strike. And to look down on human and facelpalm a lot....

Although I'm slightly perturbed by the lack of armor for the Qunari in the comic. In DAII, I thought the reason they weren't wearing any armor was because they had been caught in a shipwreck and were forced to abandon their armor -- since, you know, you can't swim with armor on.

And yet... now it's apparent that the Qunari don't wear armor period. Sure they're a force to be reckoned with even when they're not wearing armor, but still....

I would love for sten to be in da3, it would be a nice way to tie in the warden to. maybe those that told sten they would go back with him to seheron can have their warden appear.

Perhaps it has to do with their original fighting style. They came over on ships with cannons and gunpowder. Their culture seems to be a naval one(as they were able to transfer a massive population on boats), and people rarely if ever wear armor on board ships in "realistic" fantasy.

Qunari ground warfare is probably centered around guerilla tactics with a dash of explosives.

I will like to point out that in a meeting one of the developers said "if Sten came back, he would still not have horns". 1. I think he will probably be in DA3. 2. he will look WAY different then the last Arishok.

I'm totally cool with that. I always just assumed that he didn't have horns because he was from Seheron and the ones from DA2 were from Par Vollen so I was never butthurt like some people over the whole design thing.

I wonder if he will have horns if he shows up in DA3. Not sure if I would enjoy seeing Sten with horns. Too big a change.

Yeah, that's something Mr.Laidlaw hinted at before DA2 launch when questioned about the lack of armour on the qunari, iirc. It made some amount of sense. So it's rather disappointing to now just see this "new iconic appearance" applied to 'regular' qunari as well.

Sten becoming Arishok seemed a bit random, convenient and fan-service-ey to me, but the more I think about it, the more sense it actually makes, since he was an active part of the fight with the Archdemon. While the old Arishok failed in Kirkwall, and even if he brings back Isabela it is said by Varric that there are rumours about her escaping with the tome again.

I know people hate it, but of all the characters in the DA franchise Sten is one of the two (the other being Sigrun) who I would welcome the writers explaining away their potential deaths so they could return in large roles. >.>

But yeah, regardless I would love to see Sten turn up in DA3 even if only as an import decision that doesn't effect the game in a huge way.

everyone seems to think sten has forgot the true threat of the Darkspawn he saw if first hand and I think he will continue to try and find the missing people he talked about in dao and want to work with the wardens to destroy the ancient magisters and destroy the darkspawn. I believe the qunari new the magisters evil was the true threat and that is why they have continued to war with them. They are not hear to take over human lands just bring down the acient evil of the human magisters.

He never got to give his report to the Arishok remember. The Arishok got shipwreaked while chasing Isabela way before Sten ever got home to make the report.
