Combat Without Traditional Weapons

I think Dragon Age 3 should encourage more combat without traditional weapons (two-hand, sword & board, dual wield, archer, staff), in cutscenes and otherwise. I feel this could spice things up considerably and make player characters feel more versatile. It includes, but is not limitted to:

- Murder Knife. I feel this iconic item could be used more broadly. When faced with a single, story-related opponent, we should have the option of using the Murder Knife instead of engaging in traditional boss fight, based on Reputation/Coersion/Plot Choices. For example, Hawke should have the option to Murder Knife when Orsino apparently becomes insane, instead of patiently watching the slow formation of a Harvester.

- Hand-to-hand combat. This is natural and realistic for a Warrior or Rogue character, and yet woefully underrepresented in Dragon Age. Sometimes you don't have time to draw your weapon. Sometimes you are deprived of it (prison-break and waking up from sleep are common setups). Nothing shows how badass your protagonist is like beating a few fully armed guards/assassins into pulp with bare fists.

- Casting Magic without staff/wand. The Mage equivalent of hand-to-hand combat. One thing I missed about Arcane Warrior is that you can cast some spells with your weapon sheathed. In Dragon Age 2, a Mage has to brandish a giant stick for the simplest tasks (such as Summon Mabari). It's both repetitive and unnecesary. Some of the most spectacular magic in the history of fiction are cast with no tools in hand, such as the Kamehamaha Wave.

- Improvised Weapons. As one of the greatest martial artists said: "By the time I was fifty, I used no sword at all. The grass, the trees, the flowers, the stones, they can all be my Sword." There is nothing that you cannot kill or subdue people with. In the setting of Inquisition, there are quite a few interesting choices, such as drowning your opponent in a basin of Holy Water, bashing their head concave with a statue of Andraste, or burning them alive with the Eternal Flame.

Well, since I don't see how a non-Mage character in Dragon Age can do something like that, I think in the Dragon Age setting it can be broadly classified as Magic.

Seriously, BioWare, allow us to do the Cone of Lightning/Shock again would you?

I support punching and kicking as a viable weapon style. I think it would be great.

I would love something like the "interrogation" scenes out of Splinter Cell: Conviction (since you are probably an "inquisitor") and some improvised weapons like in Witcher 2 (shovel, pick-axe etc.) for use in traditional weapon styles.

How about offering the option to use short swords, Katanas, or staffs?

I support the return of the murder knife.

And I love the fact that is its actual name.

If we're talking kamehamehas then I suggest dual wielding kienzans.

Heh, Jade Empire had improvised weapons, such as table legs and ham (not the actor but the meat).

You can never have too much of the murder knife.

Hand-to-hand? I'm not an expert on Medieval combat training but was hand-to-hand really that big of a thing amongst knights?

Personally, I'd like to keep the traditional weapons and make the talents awesome. I really liked DA2's cross class combos for that reason. I liked thinking of synergies with powers. Nail that stuff down and I don't care if the PC is holding a sword, a fish, or a weasel tied to a stick and with a spork stuck in its eye socket.

There should be bare-handed branch for warrior in the previous DAs. Warriors should learn how to use the most basic of all weapon, your fist and feet, as their first weapon.

It would be so much more fun beating guards and templars into reddish pulp with your hands.

Hand -to-hand was mostly used in the Orient as a weapon style, focusing on certain bodyparts and affecting the enemies chi, hand to hand in Medieval Europe was only used when you were missing your weapon (in actual combat, duels and brawls excluding), if BioWare was to bring in a Hand-to-hand skill tree to make it good they would have to take influence from the Orient which they could do. But I'm not 100% sure they would since it is mostly a Medieval Europe influenced game.

i think in the age of plate armor and melee combat, battles between armored soldiers would often involve wrestling and grappling on the ground (ie knocked from your horse, sword knocked from your hand, etc). not that plate armor is as cumbersome as it is often presented, but i do believe that it would inhibit any sort of "modern" martial art.

There was some mention about drastically unique weapons requiring special animations just for those weapons to avoid clipping -- something they were wanting to avoid apparently.

well Orient martial arts often used a healthy variety of weapons. So A dedicated Hand to Hand Combat tree should suppliment all weapon styles.

Martial arts Influences:

Rogue: Kenpo or Wing Chun(Good speed styles)

Warrior: Okiawan Karate or Hung Gar Kung Fu(both strong style martial arts)

Mage: Ba gua or Tai Chi Chuan(good internal martial arts suppliments both mana building, Weapons and unarmed)
