WELL. DA:O tried and not everything was shiny, DA2 was rushed and streamlined (for me) so;
1) Infitity's engine games had real side quest; they were side-stories, nevertheless there was depth, immersion (ofc not in all cases). I do not know who the hell accepted the... "QUEST-BAGS!" in DA:). At least for me it was ruining immersion, made the lore shallow and oriented only to the main storyline.
2) Mechanics. I won't say much about DA2 - after DA:O I felt it was good direction, there was one problem though; Infinity engine games were semi-turn based; you had real time with pause, but there was a rhythm - DAO's combat needed an improvement, instead DA2 combat was made to be "awesome" -damn... We've got Diablo for hack&slash style. Party based RPG is meant to be tactical - don't be afraid that players are forced to think about the area, abilities of their team, the plan of the assault. It is more awesome that a good plan works than making combat more fast or as you called "satisfactionary" - no enemies from the air in 3 waves aren'r awesome, satisfactionary or believable*
3)* Make the story believable (and logical). DA:O was fine, DA2 with all its faults also did decent work - just DO NOT make the same mistake as with ME franchise - you've lost many devoted fans by this "closure", and then by calling this disaster an "artistic vision" (games can be a work of art, but crafting a believable setting, story; which had logic and sense, and then ending it with things such an OUT OF SPACE ending is not a good thing) - ofc, writing team is changing, but the roots are in DA:O story - do not put at 10 minutes before the end a character or situation that would be unbelievable in comparison to the rest of the setting -such as this damned holo-child of ME3 with its logic like: "organics are so stupid, they make robots. robots will eventually kill them... so we made our own robots to kill organics, so they won't make their robots which kill'em" TADAAA! ARRRRTISSSSTIC!
4) Companions. Put more dialogues - even if they are not crucial for the plot/combat/achievements. You are capable of creating interesting npcs. Many players truly liked DA crew... Morrigan, Alistair... (and ofc ME too; Liara, Tali, Garrus, Thane. Ashle.. ekhmmm well...), cared about them. Hearing their stories, thoughts, opinions is worth more than 10 DLC with "horse armor", new weapons or so...
