Introduction

About this guide
This guide provides combat strategies for almost every challenging battle in Dragon Age: Origins. Hopefully you can now win that very difficult fight! I will be posting new combat strategies every once in a while and hopefully this guide will be complete in a month or so.
All strategies are simply suggestions, nothing more.

Many thanks to the Dragon Age Wiki for some very useful information and to Bioware for creating such a fantastic game.

Combat Strategies

1. Korcari Wilds
Enemies: Genlock (2), Genlock Archer (1) and Hurlock (2)
Description: These are the first Darkspawn units you'll encounter.
Strategy: Position your team next to the fallen tree and press the hold button (H). Make sure your ranged characters (archers/mages) are in the back. Use one of your characters to attract the attention of the enemy.
You can now easily kill the two Hurlocks and the Genlocks won't be able to hit you. [1] After the Hurlocks are dead,
simply kill the Genlocks and you're done. [2]

2. Korcari Wilds
Enemies: Genlock (4), Hurlock (1) and Genlock Archer (2)
Description: Go to the west and you'll see some ruins, two tents and a group of Darkspawn.
Strategy1: Move Daveth up the hill. Alistair and Ser Jory take the lower ground. Alistair serves as your main tank while Ser Jory is a damage dealer. Let Daveth attack the Genlock Archers. [1]
Strategy2: Move all your characters up the hill and let Daveth attack the Genlock Archers. Alistair and Ser Jory can protect Daveth. This is the best strategy IMO since Alistair and Ser Jory won't be surrounded by Darkspawn and your ranged characters are well protected. [2]

3. Korcari Wilds
Enemies: Genlock Rogue (3), Hurlock Archer (1), Hurlock (2), Genlock (1) and Hurlock Emissary (1)
Description: This battle takes place near the small bridge in the south. You need to cross this bridge to get to the Grey Warden Outpost.
Strategy: Start by attacking the Hurlock Emissary with a ranged character (Daveth). [1] This will make him flee. Use the hold button (H) so that your team won't chase him. A Genlock Rogue will spawn and attack you. [2] Run back to the rest of your team and kill the Rogue. [3] Two more Rogues will spawn, kill them both.
Once you're done, the Emissary has returned. Use ranged attacks to kill him. Let Alistair stand in front of your party to protect the others. [4] Once the Emissary is dealt with, cross the bridge and kill the remaining Darkspawn.
Watch out for the Leghold traps! [5] Disarm them or try to avoid them.

4. Korcari Wilds
Enemies: Gazarath (1)
Description: Activate the pile of rocks on the small hill next to the bridge.
Strategy: Not much strategy here. Use Alistair as your main tank and attack Gazarath. Keep your ranged characters at a distance. [1] If you're lucky, Gazarath will attack Daveth and you can keep running away from him while your melee characters finish him off.
Posted Image

5. Ostagar
Enemies: Hurlock (3) and Genlock (4)
Description: Enter the exterior of the Tower of Ishal and you'll encounter a group of Hurlocks and Genlocks.
Strategy: Ignore the fight and position your party next to the wall as seen in screenshot 1. [1] Press the hold button (H) and use one of your characters to attract the attention of the enemy. Kill them in this secluded area where the Genlock archers cannot hit you. Attack the Genlock archers once the Hurlocks are dead.
Posted Image

6. Tower of Ishal - First Floor
Enemies: Hurlock (5) and Genlock Emissary (1)
Description: These are the first enemies you'll encounter inside the Tower of Ishal.
Strategy: Position your team next to one of the statues. [1] Proceed carefully with your main character to attract the attention of the two Hurlocks. Run back to the rest of your team and kill the Hurlocks. Once they're dead, take down the Genlock Emissary with ranged attacks. [2] If you have a mage in your team let him use Crushing Prison, Force Field or Paralyze if possible. Kill the remaining Hurlocks when the Emissary is dead.
Posted ImagePosted Image

7. Tower of Ishal - First Floor
Enemies: Hurlock (4) and Genlock (3)
Description: This is the second battle inside the Tower of Ishal.
Strategy: Position your team in the corner as seen in screenshot 1 (don't forget to use the hold button). [1] Let your main character open the door to the left and then quicky run back. Kill all the Hurlocks that get in your way.
Posted Image

8. Tower of Ishal - Second Floor
Enemies: Hurlock (5) and Genlock (8)
Description: This can be a quite difficult battle. If you're in a hurry you find yourself surrounded by 13 enemies.
Strategy: Carefully open the door to the left and kill the two Genlocks. Proceed down the hallway and make sure you don't alert any other enemies. Open the door at the end of the hallway and position your party behind the ballistas. Use the ballistas to attack approaching enemies. See screenshot 1. [1]
Posted Image

9. Tower of Ishal - Upper Floor
Enemies: Ogre (1)
Description: Your first real boss battle. The Ogre stands between you and the beacon and must be killed!
Strategy1: Make your way to the barrels and let your party members stand behind them (don't forget to use the hold button). This requires some work. The Ogre won't be able to attack your party and you can now easily kill him with your ranged characters. [1]
Strategy2: Use this strategy if strategy 1 feels like cheating to you. Alistair is your main tank. Pause the game when the Ogre uses Massive Attack and move everyone away from him to evade his attack. Use Shield Bash, Winter's Grasp, Paralyze or a similar talent/spell when he uses Grab on one of your party members. Just keep attacking him and eventually he'll die. Don't try to evade his Ram ability because that's impossible. Gulp down a Health Poultice and continue fighting. [2]
Posted ImagePosted Image

10. Lothering
Enemies: Refugee (11)
Description: You'll find these Refugees next to the Windmill. There's a bounty on your head and that's why they attack you.
Strategy: Run for your life! Otherwise you'll be surrounded by 11 Refugees who will quickly kill your mages/archers. Position your party in the small corner next to the wooden hut so that your main tank(s) can protect your ranged characters. [1] Now simply kill them all!
Posted Image

11. Lothering
Enemies: Bandits, Wolves and several Darkspawn
Description: You can find these enemies around the Windmill. You need to accept a Chanter's Board quest to let some of them show up.
Strategy: It's quite simple really. Move your ranged characters up the hill and that's it. You can defeat all three groups of bandits this way (simply lure them to your 'ambush'). [1] The Darkspawn are located on the highway. Simply attract their attention, run all the way back and kill them all. Take down the Wolves as you did with the Bandits. [2]

Note: all comments are welcome :D. I will first await some replies and then see if I'm going to continue this guide or not. Hopefully this guide can help first-time players to win a difficult battle or to learn some new strategies.

Nice, first time a guide has bothered with pics afaik.

For the Ogre in the tower, a really easy way is to equip everyone with ranged weapons, and kite the ogre with whoever has the aggro.

There are also barrels you can hide behind where the Ogre can't reach you.

That method is cheating, kiting is an ancient strategy.

Absolutely.  There are several battles where the room design is such that victory is trivial.  The Ogre is one.  The Broodmother is another.

Yes, I thought the broodmother was going to be awful, but once I noticed a few things about the way the room and her attacks are set up, she was easy-peesy.

It is nice to see this list of battle strategies and see quite a few of the tricks I use in the mix.

Yep, in real life battles or wars, soldiers don't say - no we won't use the terrain to gain an advantage - that's cheating.

In the so-called real life it gets even "worse"  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_warfare

Would be great guide if it could be Bioware approved. The forum is getting bit messy despite user made efforts.

I'm unsure whether I should continue this guide or not.

It's a bit difficult to write a guide like this because there are so many team setups. You can have three mages and a rogue in your team or four warriors.

I think for now this guide can be useful to new players who don't know how to use tactics.

Perhaps I'll rewrite this guide (more tactics, tactics menu) but it can quickly 'die' again

Hard to say. On one hand, from the question players ask here all the time, it seems "forum based guide" could be of help, one the other question remains if players bother to look for informations or if they find more efficient approach to ask a question and get the answer. To me your guide looks good, but ..

I appreciate it for one, but I know it is hard to work to put this kind of thing together.

I don't need anyone telling me how to play the game. The game is easy as it is, specially if Wynne and Morrigan area loaded with tons of Lyrium even the lesser ones. I already downplayed a thread about rogues before so I'm giving this guide another thumbs down. Good intention though, IMO I don't need anyone telling me what to do with how I play.

Then don't read this thread, it's not for you. The author generously took his time to make a how to guide for people who would like some additional guidance, or possibly a strategy that they did not try. :)

Fail :pinched:

These are suggestions, nothing more. I never said that this is how you should play the game. If you think this game is easy try a solo run or something.
I wrote this guide for people who are new to the game and need some tips on how to use tactics.

I believe a solo run guide would be more useful and more interesting.

This guide can die quickly and new players won't be bothered to search for it.

Well that's why I haven't updated it since I posted it ;) I first wanted to await some replies.

I'm working on a solo Arcane Warrior guide atm. There are no real combat strategies for solo Warriors/Rogues because most fights are the same (use your talents, some bombs and poisons, activate your sustainables and wait until your enemy lies dead).

Same could be said for arcane warrior unless of course you're using it for the armor buff talents only. I guess the best way to handle the guide is to take each class individually and show off various solo methods of approaching any given situation. That way people should be able to marry up various tactics and be able to easily conqueror any situation.

eg. the rock fist / fireball cue ball combo which works like this :

Whenever you engage hostiles there will always be 1 that sees you first and starts to run toward you. The bulk of the mob will then give chase followed by a few stragglers. This tends to draw the hostiles out so that you cannot incorporate the entire mob inside you fireball AOE. If you cast rockfist on the first hostile to see you you can delay the cast of fireball just long enough so that all the hostiles fall within your fireball AOE. I call it the cue ball effect because hostiles literally bounce about like a cue ball and have very little chance to actually engage your caster.

Another tactic would be to simply use cover when facing heavy amounts of archers as archers cannot fire through solid objects. This forces the AI to run toward you in which case you can deal with both melee and archers at the same time.

I've been thinking about something like that. A list of combat tactics (spell combos, Cone of Cold + Virulent Walking Bomb, Stonefist + Fireball) and screenshots showing how it works and looks like.

Some examples:

- Rock Fist + Fireball

- AoE spell (Blizzard for example) + Glyph of Repulsion (in a doorway)

- Cone of Cold + Virulent Walking Bomb + Crushing Prison

- Force Field (main tank) + AoE spell (feels like cheating >.<)

Then he either hurls a big rock which kills people in the teeny tiny space or moves the barrels.
