So, I've vastly enjoyed what I've played so far, but...

I have *many* technical issues with the game.

Specs:
Operating system:  Windows XP pro. 32bit
Video card:  Nvidia 8800 gts g92 with driver version 180.48
Processor:  AMD athlon 64 x2 6400+ 3.2ghz dual core
RAM: 4gb installed, OS can only see 3gb though (32bit OS)

First up:  Crashes.  Some times the game will run fine for several hours, some times it will crash within 5 minutes of starting.  Either way, the crashes are identical: "application has encountered an error and needs to close."  This is very annoying, and I see no way around it.  It's usually either during or after a conversation *or* when I target something in combat.

Then the bluescreens.  They only happen when I'm playing DA:O, and they happen *frequently.*  Windows claims it's the nvidia driver, but alas, I cannot update my drivers because the newer versions kill my video output, and nvidia seems to be in no great hurry to fix them.  I've had 4+ bluescreens while playing since I installed the game two days ago.

Aaaaaand, the load times.  This is a minor issue, seeing as I usually can't keep the game running long enough, but when the game runs for 4+ hours the load times become horrendous.  I can fix the problem by restarting the game, but it is a bit of a nuisance.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as it's gotten to the point of unplayability.  I really don't want to see another BSOD.

Bumping again.

Surely there must be some way to actually play the game I bought, honestly.

No problems here with a GTS 250 and Windows 7 64 bit.

Maybe its other peoples setups or drivers.

My guess would be the drivers.

My guess would be the drivers as well. Maybe a newer card. I've got 2 285gtx and windows 7 64 bit no problem here

Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing I can do about the drivers because there's a known bug with any of the newer versions that prevents me from using them.

It's strange, though, that I only have problems playing DA:O. The drivers are fine for every other game.

So, does anyone have any actual advice?

It's a real pity, because it seems it's asking too much of companies to actually write software that, uhm, works. And by "companies," I mean BioWare and Nvidia (though the latter has been crap for a looooooooooooong time).

If your BSOD is claiming that your nvidia driver is failing, then that is the cause. Have you written down the STOP code? I have been using the 185.85 driver without issue and have played with a gtx285, gtx275 and an 8800GT. Try upgrading your driver to this one. What exactly is the issue that you have with the newer drivers? I have run into a couple, (1) the install fails because the physx driver is taking to long and the install aborts - FIX - Unpack the nvidia executable (downloaded from nvidia)with winrar and remove the physx executable, then run the setup.exe from the unpacked folder. (2) The nvidia control panel fails to install in SAFE mode - FIX - install the nvidia driver in normal mode, the control panel msi will not run in SAFE mode for most PCs. I have not seen any performance drops with this driver with any other games and this game runs smoothly. This game does have a couple of flaws, (1) the game maxes out all 4 cores of my quad core processor and it consumes nearly 90% of my memory. When I get a lock-up, I do a ctrl-alt-del to bring up task manager and minimize the game for about a min and then bring it back up. Also, I fond that the load times seem to get longer when I have lots of 'saves', I go into my save folder and delete the ones that I don't need and pare it down to about 5 or 6 (I renumber the saves to slot 1, etc) Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, not all the BSODs were Nvidia (one was p17.sys, which is my sound card driver, which has NEVER crashed before).  It's also not as clear-cut as that - I've had BSODs due to my RAM overheating that windows attributed to nv4_dsp.dll, so I'm skeptical, *especially* because the BSODs are exclusively while playing DA:O.

My problem with the newest drivers is they simply kill my video output.  This is a known issue, and I believe it may be due to the monitor I have - I don't really know, but I'm not willing to replace my monitor because nvidia can't code decent drivers.

I've never had a lockup (other than the load times, which are my least concern right now, and can be fixed by minimizing).

I crash a lot without a bluescreen, in which the game simply exits to desktop and brings up the error reporting prompt.  Nothing I can do about that, so far.

Hi, I don't really thing nvidia is to blame here. Most newer games are built with the latest technology and companies like nvidia are constantly putting out new drivers to increase compatability with the newer games. The issue could be in few areas, (1) your monitor seems to be the real problem, have you checked for a firmware upgrade? (2) Older drivers may not be properly optimized for this game. I am sure you have tried, but have you searched the forums on your monitor's website? tried newer beta drivers? have you tried any newer ones? I have tried the 190+ dirvers and I didn't like them (made my fifa10 lag) so I went to the 185.85 and I am happy with it. I am not positve, but I think this game requires the physx driver to run and you may have a conflict with the older drvier. just my .02 cents. last bit of advice, have you checked your application/sytem/dragonage logs in Event viewer? You may find some good info there at the cause of your failures. Best of luck

Firmware?  It's just an LCD monitor - you plug it in, it displays the image.

I've tried at least 5 different driver versions, they all cause the bug.  I'm not sure what version started the bug (I believe it was 186.something, but I'm not sure),  but I do know that I'm not the only one who gets the black screen bug.

Never heard of event viewer.

Game just crashed again.

I simply can't play if it crashes every five minutes.

To get to event viewer.

Start - Run - type without quotes in the run box and hit ok "eventvwr" - check the logs, they will give you a lot of details.

by the way, what is the make and model of your LCD panel.

Not very many details there, only says that the application crashed a bunch of times and gives some addresses for each crash, which I can't make any use of.

For example:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Application Error

Event Category: None

Event ID: 1001

Date: 12/27/2009

Time: 5:57:23 PM

User: N/A

Computer: XXX

Description:

Fault bucket 1541060058.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft....ink/events.asp.

Data:

0000: 42 75 63 6b 65 74 3a 20 Bucket:

0008: 31 35 34 31 30 36 30 30 15410600

0010: 35 38 0d 0a 58..

No one has any possible solution?

This is ridiculous, I can't play for more than 10 minutes.

Your solution is quite simple,

Solution = Update your nvidia driver or reinstall after a clean un-install. You seem to have a clear issue with your current 'dated' driver,

Solution #2 = Contact your Monitor maker (Acer) and query about this "nvidia problem" with your monitor. If there is truely a conflict with an nvidia driver and your monitor, it should be addressed with them. They must have a new driver, firmware or may direct you to use the windows plug n play monitor driver.

This issue appears to have nothing to do with the game or nvidia

If both NVidia and AMD/ATI card users are having the problem, then it's Dragon Age. Deductive reasoning.

I would respectfully disagree.  The OP of this thread clearly stated that he did not want to update his nvidia driver because of an issue he has with his monitor and that his BSOD referenced the nvidia driver.  My Deductive reasoning tells me that the issue is with a faulty driver install or an outdated driver.

*Most* of the BSOD's referenced the driver, and they have done that before when the true problem was simply the memory overheating.  There was still one BSOD that referrenced a file that has never, ever caused me a bluescreen before.

I suspect it may well be that DA:O is incompatable with my current video driver, but I am by no means sure.  Reading other posts, the constant crash issue seems to be affecting a great many people with very varied system specs, so the bluescreens may be entirely separate.  Who knows?

All I want is for the game to run.  While it runs, it runs beautifully, on near-max graphics with smooth framerate and no artifacts at all (save one odd issue where it colored Morrigan black once, but restarting the game fixed that), meaning it's most likely not the video card overheating, although my video card runs at ~75 celsius under load, which is high.

SirDremor, I sent you what you requested. Also I'm sorry guys for being a bit snappy there. You are correct the person didn't want/unable to change drivers and most likely was causing the problem. Sorry I didn't catch that. Anyway I'm still very frustrated I can't play. So far things were looking epic.

I have a problem similar to this except my nvidia driver is not out dated. As soon as i updated my driver the crashes started happening so i wanna go back to the driver i had previously but idk how to do so as i dont even know the name of the driver i had :/
