I'm playing through once again and am about to search for the urn of ashes, throughout my other play throughs i've only ever battled the high dragon once.
I was around lvl 14/15 rouge DW, I had Aliaster as my tank kitted in Templar armour, Leiliana as a ranged wearing Drakescale and Wynne running in circles healing when required.
I did manage to slay the beast, albeit at the cost of my main character, and was wondering if you good people had any tips or advice for my second attempt.
I want to use Sten and Morrigan this time as am attempting to defile the ashes, once again im a rogue DW but can go ranged as i have Zevran tagging along.

A few things that you may consider:
1) You may use Sten to engage the dragaon at melee range and keep everyone else at range.
2) Make sure Sten receives frequent healing, in your case, from Morrigan. If Morri's 2nd Specialization is Spirit Healer, then you have even more healing options. Just keep Sten alive however possible - stronger health poultices can also be used.
3) If Sten has taunt, use it as often as possible to keep the beast's attention on him. In the meantime, keep raining arrows with Zev and your warden from a distance dealing constant damage without interruption from the dragon.
4) Make sure Morri doesn't use any offensive or debuffing spells on the dragon, otherwise it'll turn towards her and it's fire attack may deal damage to your archers as well. In short, just keep it busy with Sten and make everyone attack with simple attacks from distance, keeping Morrigan focussed on keeping Sten alive.
5) When Sten is grabbed, you may use Force Field on him, and heal him up till force field dies out.
6) Make Sten use Sunder armor first.
7) The archers will just be attacking normally with occassional shattering shots if you have them. Shattering shot will reduce it's armor by 10 (20 with master archer) and stacks when used by different archers.
8) Keep indomitable sustained for Sten, and equip him with the Yusaris if you have it. Apply a Greater warmth Balm on him before blowing the horn, and keep everyone on hold at a safe distance before that.
9) Having said all this, if you are a backstabbing rogue, and is comfortable doing so while Sten faces the creature, by all means, do so. A well built backstabber can score many hits before the dragon throws you off your feet. You may want to enchant your weapons with a few Hale runes. Momentum plus a Swift salve will make sure you are attacking at highest possible speed without running into speed bugs.

Greater warmth balm on everyone will reduce the injury rate greatly. Sten really isn't a very good tank. If you send Alistair in, he ought to be able to be annoying and do some damage, which is what you want for a tank. Juggernaught is pretty good armour for dragon fighting until you get Wade's. Alternatively, consider using Shale with a nice big fire crystal.

Haven't got shale im afraid. Plenty of food for thought there, thanks guys. Was hoping to do high dragon before brecillian forest so juggernaut wouldn't be available. I found on my other playthrough that backstabbing was not as effective as i would have liked (i was wielding blightblood and the green blade) and haven't even considered morrigans lack of healing skills just yet.
Guess its best left for now, ill quench my dragon thirst on flemeth for now. Any further tips then please post on as all advice is helpful

Three ranged and one distraction... I mean, melee, is a great combination for dragons.
If you're going to use Sten then consider taking both Morrigan and Wynne - the first for the cold spells and the second for the Healing. Dragons are actually vulnerable to cold damage, plus spells which freeze do seem to work quite regularly on them - if not for long. With Morrigan spamming the Cone of Colds and Winter's Grasps, and Wynne devoted to nothing but keeping Sten alive then you should be fine. You might be able to get away with just Morrigan if she has Spirit Healing as a second spec, but having them both is probably a better idea.
I'll be honest: Sten isn't an ideal choice to face the dragons. Alistair has a much better defence, AND threat generating talents (you want to make sure the dragon stays focussed on your tank), and he's vulnerable to being Grabbed, unlike Shale or Dog. Still, if you have your heart set on the big fella, then it's more than do-able.
And, ice arrows for your archer/s.
Other than that, fill up on lyrium and health potions, and don't afraid to chug them. It's essential the mages to keep up the spells no matter what.

I know its an easier battle but i just hammered flemmeth with a lvl 12 Dw rogue, alistair, shen and wynne.
Okay shen may have died and i was a bit sneaky with my positioning whilst striking but a victory is a victory.....isnt it?

As a closing comment from myself i would just like to announce that i've done it.
using a lvl13 DW rogue (oathkeeper and beastmans dagger) lvl12 Alistair(blightblood and eamons shield),dog(kaddis of lady of the skies) and wynne (uuuum, cant remember).
I set wynne to ranged healing, sacrificed Alistair and dog whilst i ran in circles stabbing and archering (?)
I always thought high dragon was a tougher battle than Flemeth and thought so whilst fighting but my party accomplishments care to differ as flemeth is our toughest monster beaten

I always go with a ranged-heavy party against the high dragon. Melee fighters take too much damage as the dragon can do a aoe sweep, and thus your healer will be healing not only the tank, but every melee fighter, which would take a toll on their mana. If you have Alistair and Sten in the party, for example, have Alistair go melee while Sten uses a bow.
If you were to send in one tank, while the rest of the party uses bows or staves, it should make for an uneventful battle. If the tank gets grabbed, use force field on them, or stonefist, scattershot, etc. on the dragon. If you have the blood dragon armor, or the warden commander armor, those will do just fine equipped on your tank.

I have found a way to get the last dragon-scale piece without having to fight the High dragon.
1] In the caves, agree with Kolhorn? (the guy that want you to defile the ashes)
to pour blood into the ashes.
2] When you meet Kolhorn at the mountain, before you went into the building, -kill him instead,
and yet another medium sized dragon appear to aid him, this medium size dragon will
also drop a dragon scale, and you now have enough pieces for all armor at Wade's.
You can then come back at any time later in game to kill the High dragon
