Both work for me.
And if BW employees have said ''no'' case closed really.
I did like my Origins Dalish Warden blankly staring at people.
The look of utter annoyance on her face was priceless whenever she said damn near anything.
And if Hawke hadn't been voiced we wouldn't have this gem:

Both work.

Its an odd thing - but when I recall conversations with my avatar - I don't remember seeing a blank character - I remember a character who was quite expressive.

Its amazing how much you fill in when you have a blank slate character.

Like David Gaider has said. BioWare want to make your avatar be active during cutscene. In game like skyrim having no vioce acting for the main character is less important because the game  do not give cinematic dialogue. You`re just staring at the npc talking.

While older game .. Like BG2 .. Seriously if you don`t see it. . God help us., It`s frigging sprites on the screen. So your character never look like a douche if he never talk.

That is true. But in DAOs case I just could not get over my charachters annoyed expression.
The hilarity of it just drove me nuts. XD

Cailan: So what did you do?
Me: Killed a noble. *stares.*
Cailan: uuuuh...

Priceless.

In the end, does it matter so much?

The PC is still limited regardless, the only thing that changes is the illusion of it.

Does it matter? Yes.

Its a trick for player agency.

When I think of Shepard - I think of Mark Meer.

When I think of one of my wardens, no matter how different (Dwarf, Elf, Human), of think of them as me. Well, not me, but mine.

Don't underestimate the affect an illusion can have on a players enjoyment of a game.

I do underestimate it I guess. Mainly because I don't care what you think honestly, since that is your preference. That is why you have preferences to one form of the other, just like my preference is neither in terms of that aspect of the design. See, in the end there really is little difference by design to the function of the protagonist, and this is not so much of an opinion of mine, but moreso a fact that games have limitations based on their designs.

simply put, the ideal RPG doesn't exist in game format, all that exists is a schema of what we think it is based on the design tropes we enjoy personally. This is why this entire discussion is not only subjective, but somewhat pointless in the end, because no one will be satisfied with the method the cat is skinned, so to speak.

You're right. The ideal / perfect RPG doesn't exist. But I don't see what harm there would be in an additional audio switch under mute msuic and above mute dialogue that says "mute player character".

It won't affect those who like their voice, and provides an option for those who enjoy their game without a voiced player.

I don't see the harm in it either. I am just saying that this entire topic is pointless because it doesn't matter one way or the other in the end. If it's included or not, the game will be the same in terms of its design.

EDIT:

And because of that, all we are asking is more control of that design with this topic. Something, I might add, we have no control over, nor should we since were not professionals. But since Gaider already came out and said that the ideas put forth by the OP are not ideal, I see no reason for this to really continue.

*Draws greatsword.
*Chooses dialogue option
*Stares blankly while charging at you and "yelling" dialogue choice

Isn't the only thing left for this thread derailment? Thought the devs answered earlier on in it what's going to be happening.

I on the other hand will be asking for a non voiced player character option in my RP games until the day I stop playing games.

Check out project eternity, although some of the things said on the kickstarter have me worried enough to regret backing it.

Yeah - I've been following with a lot of interest - but just not enough information about it to back it yet - but I have a slush fund good to go for it once I get that info!

That is part of the problem with that kickstarter, they have some things very clear on what they want to do, but little to show for it at the moment.

And the last thing I want is a carbon copy of D&D in a new setting. I am already contempt that the companions may not be as complex as BioWare's work, or the design will be isometric, which brings forth a number of technical issues because of the limitations of the graphical style. But as I said before, I don't care so much about that as long as the content is good.

Which is what we should be focusing on with Dragon Age III. This is why I am calling for transparency, so we all know what were getting and what to expect, leaving no reason for anyone to really complain in the end.
