I'm surprised I haven't seen a thread for this, yet. In Dragon Age Origins, they suspiciously never show Duncan actually being killed. The screen just goes black, all Soprano-style.

I wonder if he's bound to re-emerge in DA3. There was no other reason to make his death so ambiguous.

Hah I'd love more Duncan but I'd be on him being dead. Maybe he is the secret surprise reveal in the new comic that will make you lay an egg?

There was a thread about this and DG said Ducan dies at Ostagar.

pff. That's a vague answer.  Why didn't he just say, "Duncan is dead."

He didn't.

Obviously Gaider isn't going to spoil a thing. Nondisclosure agreements are pretty binding when your job is on the line.

I have yet to play Dragon Age:Calling, but I've heard that DLC raises some questions.

He got decapitated by a darkspawn. They just didn't show it since it's more dramatic that way.

They didn't find his remains, however. Only his weapons.

Here, I'll bait David Gaider and we can get a real answer:

Gaider, is Duncan dead (dead and gone, not coming back whatsoever, not even as a darkspawn zombie )- yes or no?

lol, Duncan is an elephant in the room? Which room are you in? I don't think we need to see the physical trauma just to know that it occurred.

No dout it does, since that isn't even a game.

Duncan's gone. I'm not sure why people interpret a cliffhanger into his fate despite being given the answers they want repeatedly. Just because we don't see something doesn't mean it didn't happen, and just to play devil's advocate and suggest that he didn't die in the battle, how do you suppose he survived the darkspawn feast, corruption and winter that followed?

Duncan is dead. If he appears again, it would have to be in a story that takes place prior to Origins, if anything.

I have written books that convince my readers that a specific character is dead, only for them to show back up later in the text. The key is to twist the reader's perspective, aligning it with the perspective of another character who firmly believes what's dead is dead. Bioware did just this by twisting the perspective of Duncan's supposed final moment. It's a simple, easy trick that most people fall for.

p.s. My bad. I assumed it was DLC because I ran across some forums where users were discussing it as thought it were playable. I see now that it is a novel. I was misled. Hope that clears up the fact that I'm not stupid, I just don't keep up with the DA novels.

Also, didn't Alistair mention that Duncan was going to have his calling soon? Even if he survived Ostagar, I'd guess that he'd either get killed off-screen by darkspawn or end up like Larius.

Ah. Well there you go - then I have my proof.

It would have been interesting to bring him back in DA3. And that would be any more cheesy than most everything else involved in a fantasy story.

That is what the "Origins" alluded to in DAO. It is the beard that has been pulling the strings all along.

Must be a stinky elephant, what with it having been dead for ten years and all.
