If he isn't dead, what purpose would he serve, besides being a lame dramatic effect? I don't see how the writers could implement him successfully into Dragon Age 3.

Well I read that they verified he is dead, so it doesn't matter. But to answer your hypothetical: Everything in a fantasy story is posed for lame dramatic effect. People coming back from the dead is no different.
