Not especially DA III related (or that important) but I thought I'd post it here since it's the most recent and relevent DA forum. After reading Those Who Speak #2 I began to wonder what qamek actually was. We know it turns people into slavish lobotomites, but after actually seeing it used (sort of) in the comic, I started to think it may be something we're more familiar with.

In the comic, the qamek is purple and hovers in a bowl and gives off some kind of vapour. This reminded me of the lyrium that the Circles use to put apprentices through their Harrowing. So, could qamek be the Qunari word for a third type (blue, red and now purple) lyrium?

perhaps it's the qunari version of a tranquil ritual.

No, that'd be cutting out the tongue of the mage.

That occured to me as well. Both substances do serious mental damage.

that's just to make their mages unable to influence anyone through speech.

this however, is using what could be lyrium to make people emotionless and obedient...like tranquils.
being made tranquil is being severed from the fade, though the templars only use it on mages the procedure can work on non-mages as well.

The DAO mages that were made tranquil were only cut of from the fade and thus had no more magical talent and no emotions. Tranquility does not magically make someone obedient. That was just one of the mess ups by BioWare in DA2...

I believe it was stated a few times in DA:O that Tranquil are very suggestive and quite servile.

rather than "obedient" they're more...agreeable and won't generally go against an authority figure.
the tranquil also are only able of making decisions based on logic alone, they may refuse to do something if it isn't logical.
The Qun, for its many pros and cons, is a way of life steeped in cold hard logic and devoid of individuality ergo a tranquil wouldn't refuse a demand of the Qun due to its very nature.

I really do think, after a lot of thought and consideration, that purple lyrium is the best and most appropriate answer to what qamek is to the Qunari.  Most liking a word from the Kossith language.  Real Life examples, storyline foreshadowing, and the structure of how magic manifests itself as well as the geological aspect of locales within the game all tell us this is not only possible, but most feasible.

I officially vote Purple Lyrium as the answer to this question until BioWare shows us differently.  Thumbs Up King Cousland.

So the dwarves have red lyrium, the Qunari have purple lyrium, and the humans have blue lyrium.

R/P/B ending anyone?
