Force Field Description Error?

I just picked up the Mage's spell Force Field, for the first time in a few play throughs.

The description of the spell is as follows:

"The caster erects a telekenetic barrier around a target, who becomes completely immune to damage for the duration of the spell but cannot move.  Friendly fire possible."

This seems like it would be another interesting way to have the warrior draw fire, kinda like Shield Defence, and Shield Wall; but everytime I cast it the spell effects the casting Mage?

Is there something I'm missing; or what part of "Target" means "Self," and "Who" means "Me?"

Shield defence and shield wall do not draw fire, nor does force field.

Left click force field on the spell/talent bar, then select a target (friend or foe) like you would with, say, arcane bolt.

Personally, I cast it on high level enemies, which gives me a free reign to pick off the lower level enemies.

Aha, I see how to make it work on a Companion; target him her like you're attacking them, but not like you're using the Heal spell for instance.  I'm using xbox 360, but I get it; and it worked, thanks!

I didn't mean it would work like Taunt or Threaten; but once those have been utilized, and the enemie/s is/are trying to give your warrior's constitution a run for it's money, this would keep help keep enemies distracted longer, by keeping the warrior safer, much like Shield Defense and Shield Wall would in that situation.

...except it doesn't work in melee. I just tried it without any enemies around and I was able to target and cast it on my warrior; but just now I let the warrior get surrounded by 7 enemies, and no matter how close i brought my mage to the battle I was not able to target my companion?

Still seeing a dud here?

And my mage just cast this on an enemy!? I had to wait for the spell to wear off to hurt/kill it and move on??

Well that's odd. Perhaps it's a glitch?

Also, casting on an enemy isn't actually that bad. If you are being swarmed you can cast it on a high level enemy which gives you some time to pick off the pesky noobs.

EDIT:

Okay, I've had a look and this was a known problem on the 360.  What you are supposed to do to cast this on an ally (during battle) is to use the D-Pad to target (that's left, down, right,up; located below the back button on the controller).

It's been a while since I've played on the console, so I can't remember exactly how it works, but I guess it will just scroll through your allies? Also, I think you may only be able to micro-manage this spell.

Thanks for trying.

Using the D-Pad would be like casting the Heal Spell. After you cast it a pointer appears next to the character's health/mana icon; but the pointer can be moved to any ally, by pushing up/down with the dpad, and then pushing the "A" button to make the final selection. This is how I was hoping it would work....

What would be wrong with casting it like the healing spell?
