So what is it then? I am about to start a Dalish Elf Rogue Archer. I guess using a longbow. Is this based on 100% str or a 50/50 str/dex? I read every post in this thread and the Bigger Thread as well and I still don't fully understand Archery and how damage is derived. I play on 360 and I would like to know before I start to spec my Character.

On the 360, longbow damage is based fully on STR, 100%. So you'd want to go the Cunning route, and get Lethality so you can use the Cunning score to get high damage. Not only will you have a high Armor Penetration score courtesy cunning, but you can pour all your attributes into a single stat, Cunning( with some allowances to Dex to pick up talents, Wil for stamina, and Str 20 to wear the best light armor).

However, Cunning does not contribute to your Attack rating( whether you manage to hit your opponent or not) so you'd need to get the Bard specialization and run Song of Courage, which boosts party damage, attack and critical chance. You'd also want a mage to run Heroic Offense on your archer, and maybe have a Champion warrior do a Rally every battle, to ensure your archer hits.

Of course, the corresponding weakness is your defense - you'll need to protect your character with items that give bonuses to defense and Dex.

So its 100 based on str and subsequently Cunning if you get Lethality. I would still pump up Dex for Defence and chance to hit. I've read so much about archery on here and I still don't think anybody really knows whats up with it. I know I don't. I've heard its 50/50 str dex. But I play 360 not PC. How do you know for sure? I think I will still pump a decent amount into Dex still.

Didn't Georg Zoller make the hotfix? Anyway, I would think the dex hotfix makes sense in a "real world" sense; a shortbow wouldn't need much strength, relying solely on how dexterous you were. A longbow would need both dexterity of aiming and strength for its huge draw.

IS Georg Zoller making it a bad thing?

p.s It seems noone can make up their minds, and I certainly don't understand why it would be one way on the PC and different on the 360. The dragon age wikia, the tool tip on my PC version both say it's  a 50/50 split for both longbows and shortbows.

p.p.s.

Damage

Ranged weapons currently do suboptimal damage.
During development, the targeted damage for them was roughly equivalent
to a sword with better armor penetration, but changes made to other
variables over the last few months of development have chipped off a
bit of damage for bows. I intend to restore that by making the
following adjustments:

* Ranged weapon critical bonus going from 1% up +4% on bows and from 2% to 5% on xbows.

* Base weapon damage range is up +10% on all ranged weapons.

*
Shortbows now gain their damage bonus from Dex only, just as crossbows.
This, together with the range increase, makes them viable for dexterity
focused characters as they'll hit faster and harder now. The attribute
modifier damage bonus on them goes up to 120% from 100%. Finally, AP is
increased by 1, also to make the shortbow a better individual choice.

* Longbows stay 50% DEX and 50% STR as before, but also get 120% bonus damage from attribute modifiers, up from 100%.

* Crossbows stay 100% dex but also get 125% bonus damage from attribute modifiers, up from 100%

What the heck? I just keep getting more and more confused.

Archery on my main character worked great for me - top damage was over 450.

Usually I'd start with stunning shot for mob control then focus on the bosses. First weaken their armour, then lower their to hit, then arrow of death, critical shot and so on. By the time you get to the last two your mage should have also made them more vulnerable. I also gave her poisoning so if she ran out of stamina (didn't happen from level 15) she can lob a bomb or two. Very effective party member in my opinion, and Leliana and Zevren stats did not compare if you buy tomes etc for your main PC, and because they already have a lot of skills assigned when you get them.

Archery can be fun, but requires a bit of thought.
I do try to make every arrow count (getting a higher hitrate without depending on my party members too much is my main priority).
Also keep in mind that when your archer does indeed do more damage and / or your arrows hit home more often that you still will need a very good tank to protect them / pry them off of the ones that got aggro.
I found myself rolling my eyes when mobs attacked partymembers that didn't / barely even do anything.
But if you're looking for something that has a neat effect, mage may be more your thing.
I'm thinking about things like Waking Nightmare and Virulent Walking Bomb. Watching a huge group of mobs attacking eachother is hilarious (especially when the boss mobs decides to join in and thin out their own ranks).
But by no means is archery a bad thing :)
My PC and Leliana are both archers in one playthrough. I had loads of fun with it and consider it one of the more fun playthroughs I had.
I hate taking aggro though, running in circles is not for me. I find myself having Morrigan run in circles a little bit too often.

Well I use the better archery mod which finaly makes archers useful. Without it, archery simply sucks (low damage, terrible miss to hit ratio etc.). I played the game fifth times so I know what I am talking about. Now with the mod my warrior archer can finaly do something more than throw splinters at the enemy.

Oh by the way nothing more fun then a mob swinging at you and can't seem to hit you no matter what and then you take out that mob with an arrow of slaying / critical shot.

Reminds me of that Weird Al Yankovic movie where he dreams he's rambo and some VC officer tries to hit him from practically point blank with an AK47 and lands not a single round (while spraying like mad).

All Al does is one well aimed shot with an explosive charge armed arrow (at the same point blank distance) and then the baddie explodes. It still makes me cry from laughing when I compare situations to that particular scene from the movie.

I agree that if your main PC is an Archer, you will see that they will be better than Leliana was. Tomes, bonus once you become a Warden, and when you make your character. I would assume you pump STR and DEX in the beginning, then switch to CUN once Lethality is obtained. Also WILLPOWER shoud not be ignored. Oh then there is the Fade bonus stats too. Then the argument of being a Warrior Archer is valid as well. But it's cool to have to think a lot about building this type of Character. I need to finish my first 2, but my third will be some type of Archer build, most likely Rogue.
