! but some women might have seen the Dragon Age 2 Champion Trailer (or any of the other ones) and been like that looks cool BUT it's just anther game with some macho dude in it why should i play it?

Why not? I'll play a female character at the drop of a hat.

umm my point was they wouldn't know that there was a female to play cuse it's not in the trailer and not looked any more it to it than that but if the female was shown they might look up about it or go buy the game

I think it has to do with identifying with your character and with preferences.

Like... I don't identify as either gender, but I find that when I'm playing RPGs, it feels a lot more natural to play as male characters, which is why I usually have very few female characters in them. It's a non issue when I play a predefined character -- I've always been for a good Zelda game that lets you play as the Princess and when I get the chance in games like SSB or Mario Kart to play as Zelda or Peach, I take it, because I love those characters -- but when it's my own character? I just vastly prefer having him to be male. (Of course, if the game would let me play someone who isn't cisgender...) Conversely, I'm sure there are a lot of people who want to play a female and feel more comfortable when doing that.

Why would gender/race supercede gameplay, replayability, and story in purchasing a game? A trailer like what Bethesda did with Skyrim that has a mix of cgi,  and gameplay would really help Bioware than some petty pandering.

I enjoy roleplaying, but if I have the choice of playing a female character, I will *always* take that choice. I have not played The Witcher games or Alpha Protocol, both games that otherwise seem like they would be something I'd be interested in, because I don't play male characters in RPGs. My money, my choice of entertainment. I have been a Bioware fangirl since 2001, but I almost didn't buy Mass Effect 1 when it came out on PC because I assumed that I couldn't play a female character (I hadn't been following the game's development because I didn't own an Xbox and didn't think I would be interested in the sci-fi setting.)

Point is, I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who, if given the information, would branch out and try new games, after seeing marketing that appeals to them.

But even for those of us who are already following the development of the game, and will most likely buy the game even with no flashy cgi trailers, it's just cool, and nice, to see a female version of the protagonist in the trailer. It's not that complicated.

technically it wouldn't and shouldn't but i was thinking more along the lines of casual gamers or women who don't play games cuse they don't see anything that reflects them see my  riddle me this what is the point of a CGI trailer in the first place? post and syllogi makes my point

No...

I rather they use those resources on something more important... trailers have NOTHING to do with the final game, and making 2 of them (similar ones) is just a waste.

If they make one trailer with a male templar first and then 2 months later one with a female mage, THAT i would support, otherwise no.

thanks bye

They could just make one trailer showcasing a male and female at the same time. It wouldn't cost anything extra.

I think a trailer that focuses less on the story of the game (since only fans of DA would understand anything but the most general "war is coming, a hero must save the day"), but rather on the choice the game gives you. It's not about having a male or female protagonist in the trailer - its about showing that you can choose what type of character you are, how you look, what your play style is...

If the trailer for DA3 was something like the following, I think it would be succesful in bringing in fans across the board, and not be seen to be 'pandering' to anyone.

'War is coming... A hero must save the day...

But who will that hero be? Will you come from unassuming roots? [clip of female city elf shooting an arrow into a crowd of soldiers, striking down one] Or more noble upbringing? [after the first solider falls down, a human male with sword and shield battles into the group, sending one of the soldiers fleeing] Will you use magic to aid your cause? [clip of a female apostate mage using magic to lift the fleeing soldier into the air and throwing him to the ground] Or crush your opponents with the force of your might? [clip of a male Kossith hefting a huge war hammer down on the solider]. Will you stand for unity and order? [clip of a female dwarf standing in full Seeker gear, backed by a group of Templars] Or will you fight for freedom for all? [clip of a male elf, standing with mages behind him, brandishing glowing staves]

The decision is your's... Dragon Age 3 : INQUISITION

I think it is better to have a single protagonist in a trailer rather than switching back and forth between alternate male and female versions. While people who played a Dragon Age game before would understand that they were seeing male and female versions of the same hero, people that are unfamiliar with RPGs or the Dragon Age series might not know that they can choose the sex of the player character, and might not undestand that they are seeing two versions of the same character.

From a marketing perspective I think for a story trailer it is better to just go with either a male or female protagonist and stick with it.

I can't say advertising what has been a common RPG convention (choosing race, sex, class) for the past some-odd years would really rustle my jimmies personally.

I agree, just say no to gender equality in video game trailers.

I guess this makes me a total dork, but as I read that I imagined each scene in great detail, haha. If they went for something like this I'd be really happy.

If they're implementing a multi-play component, you could have all of them together at the end, and some spiel about fighting alone or with friends, or battling each other for ultimate victory.

Because you've played Dragon Age games and RPGs before.

That isn't the case for everyone, and the game wouldn't just be marketed to people who've played RPGs in the past. In a story trailer it makes much more sense to have one version of the protagonist from start to finish, for the sake of continuity.

I think maybe some people aren't getting why we care about trailers. Thye aren't for people like me who already know about the game. They are for potential new players, and players love feeling included, and feeling in control. Showing an inclusive cast for PCs (however they achieve it, and there were good ideas on here....Bioware?) would provide that link. Does it possibly seem shallow that I would be gravitated towards a game where there is a cool female protag? Maybe.

Trailers are how I find out about new games, and I do watch the DA ones when they are released anyway

Seeing women handling their own instead of "new Lara Croft syndrome" really makes me feel a game is worth my while and that I won't roll my eyes or feel covered in chauvinistic grime when watching it.

Think of being a woman and watching Cassandra kick ass (or the Sacred Ashes trailers) vs. Hitman: Absolution. That is the best way I can explain why inclusivity in advertising matters.

Oh, I actually agree with what you said. I think the problem is I was using 'rustle my jimmies' to mean the exact opposite of what it actually means. I do that kind of thing a lot.

For me, the trailers are supposed to represent the very image of the game here is not talking about commercial or attractive to sell. Not me when I watch a trailer is for pleasure. If I feel a certain emotion so I buy. And that's what happened with Mass Effect. Why I discovered BioWare games. Simply because it is one of the only studios video game development that offers customized at will his character, and you really feel about yourself. The trailers must reflect this aspect. I'm sick of seeing the big Mr. Muscle have featured in trailers! Women too can be heroes. I'm sure that if a survey is done, we will realize that many people play a female character.

Oh... it wasn't sarcasm either. I just, words.

What I meant was that a trailer about how you can do IMO basic "RPG stuff" would not really pique my interest. I'd rather see teasers about the story or gameplay. And I do think having both genders of the protagonist in one trailer could be confusing to people who aren't attached to bioware like a barnacle and don't seek immediate clarification from the devs about any uncertainty they might have (like, say, me, regarding any game that isn't produced by bioware). So I rather like the idea of the trailer character being a female rogue.
