Well if we're doing gender neutral, how about Ladyboy vonBoobensackh?

I don't think 'Hawke' sounds any more masculine than 'Shepard'.

I'd rather be called by my title (which I'm assuming will be Inquisitor) than by my name. It allows for much more role-playing and character building potential.

I'd rather just be called "ser" or "madame/monsieur" when addressed by normal people. When I'm talked about, I'd like to be called by my title (whatever that is) the way we were called "The Warden" (which actually made me always feel bad for poor, forgotten Alistair).

I don't get it, how is a family name masculine sounding? Men and women do not have different family names.

The name needs to be gender and racial neutral, since we can of course create protagonists of different gender/race combinations, RIGHT?

That's why I didn't like Hawke: it sounded too masculine for a female character.

It was her last name ... I don't understand lol how can a last name be masculine or feminine.

I do not like being called by my last name, and so that passes down to my PC, especially if I do not like the name (Hawke I do not like... not very fantasy.... more like FPS name). Also, calling females by their last names is less common so I do feel really weird when my PC always gets called Hawke. Like I have a 1st name, ya know!!! Especially the LI should call me by my first name! Of course, this becomes a voicing issue. I'd love for an option in the CC to choose how we get called. Could you try to have a phonetic sound chooser that we can play around with? If we like the what the CC gives, then we can use that, or just have the default Inquisitor or something like that. Just record the VAs pronouncing the phonetic alphabet. Or word everything such that the name is never pronounced (I think that's done in NWN2?). I'm as picky about my name as much as the looks of the PC itself, so it seems weird to be forced into a surname.

Make the last name sir. So all the females get called sir like the actual protagonist.

If I can't get to pick my name I rather get called by a title.
But if I have to I prefer to be called Murdoch

The only difficulty with multiple last names is that they'd have to voice all those lines with each name. I don't think they'd do that. It's far more likely they'll stick to the single last name and allow us to customize the first name, as in past games.

Or they could just not voice the last name.  NWN managed to avoid it in its spoken lines, even though the subtitles made use of it.

Voicing the last name is entirely unnecessary.  As such, forcing a fixed last name on us is entirely unnecessary.

This.

But then I guess people will be whine about the subtitle says their name but why doesn't the voiced dialogue whinewhinewhine. Losers.

They can turn off the subtitles if they don't want to be bombarded by the incongruity.

I'd guess the required last name is a design choice to smooth out dialog and provide a bit of variety for how the protagonist is addressed. I don't mind having a last name I like, I just mind having a last name I dislike, that drives me crazy. Shepard is a lot easier for me to accept and roleplay with than Hawke is.

I think it would be much better to have a title rather than a name.
