Serious suggestion: de L'Isle.
Look it up, there are a few references it makes. There was a man who was Viscount De L'Isle, I won't go into details. I think there are suficient enough reasons for the PC to be able to be named de L'Isle.

Out of curiosity, are you refering to Leconte de Lisle?

Not specifically, no. Looking Leconte de Lisle up, he never seemed to have held the title of viscount. I found a few things relating to the name de L'Isle, but I also know that the world is full of history, a lot of which doubles up on names. Names appear everywhere, and in various points in time. Really, I just got lucky I found a name so promising.Dintonta wrote...

Edit: That should be so promising.

It’s a title in the English respectively British peerage that was created several times (15th century and most recently in the 20th), became extinct, was recreated again etc. Spelling varied from de L’isle to Lisle. The title also wasn’t always recreated at the same rank, meaning that after one extinction it was recreated with the rank of baron, then got promoted back to Viscount later on.
British peerages.
Complex until you delve into the ‘German’ aristocracy, which usually leads to madness and death.

I knew he wasn't a noble, I was just wondering if you found that name so promising because of one of his poems you would have read (he wrote a whole book of poems called 'The barbarian poems' which are relatively evocative of the Fantasy genre). I was just curious about which one could have suggested DA to you ... ;-)Orian Tabris wrote...

Clearly, I don't have a life.
But in any case, if they do stick to a surname, it'll probably be something fairly simple in structure (one or two syllables), and to pronounce/spell. I mean, people spell Hawke as "Hawk" all the time, and it's not even Orlesian. So.

What felt masculine to me, is that in my life, as a girl, people rarely refer to me by my surname. Whereas people refer to guys I know by their last name all the time. So, I would say, being referred to by a surname feels masculine. So I would prefer just to be referred to by a title, like Inquisitor. And maybe occasionally have more uppity people put a gender specific title before that, like Madame Inquisitor.

I'm guessing that they'll stick to a title (like Inquisitor) or a surname, just like they did with DA2. Sure, Hawke wasn't my favorite name, and I would never have picked it myself... but being able to pick the first name (an individual name; much more important than a family name, in my opinion) meant a lot to me. I mean, maybe I take after Patrick Rothfuss a bit too much, but I think names are extremely important. *shrugs* I usually factor in things like etymology, meaning, social rank... everything.

I do the exact same thing! *squee* But it makes sense. Names can alter your expectations of a person, big time. Its why my friend Laquisha changed her name. People expected a different (unattractive) personailty to go with it (if anyone understands what I'm referrencing - I know there are some non-Americans on the forums)
