For those who haven't seen the PAX East footage from many a month ago, Mike Laidlaw showcased some concept art of what they were looking towards as inspiration for the DA3 world and its environments.

Start at 3:46

My question to y'all- Besides telling us what you think about the concept art shown, what would you like to see out of the DA3 overworld?

Mountains, fields, meadows, etc etc?

Speaking of which, I kinda wish those pieces of art were released online if they haven't been already.

Damn straight. Thicker forests, too.

All I'm seeing is more of the same; moderate climates, fields and forests.

It's all very pretty, but not very interesting. I want to see something new.

One thing that the Dragon Age franchise need is more striking vistas. DA:O had a few... Lake Calenhad looking out over the Mage Tower, Coming out from the tunnels to look out over the mountain-range where Andraste's Urn and the high-dragon was... Even some areas in Orzamar, the bridge at Ostagar and the Deep Roads.

DA2 on the other hand felt kind of cramped to be honest. Kirkwall's Hightown looked great if you craned the camera upwards, but you never got a sense of scope looking around high-town in general. The rest of the game was also very boxed in in terms of vistas and scope. Sure, the wounded coast had nice skies, but that was about it.

I think Dragon Age 3 (and Thedas in general) could benefit from having some grander vistas and grander landmarks. The White Spire, huge cathedrals and palaces, deep ravines and gourges, large lush forests or calm oceans in the distance, large cliffs, bridges, rivers and actual mountains. I have to say that Star Wars the Old Republic has managed to create some superb backgrounds and backdrops for their planets, so the DA-team sould certainly take some inspiration form there.

And more environmental interaction.

For example, crossing a few creeks and going through a forest while having to fight a few enemies between the trees before you get to your destination of "Dalish Camp Whatevers and Stuff"

I'm liking what I'm seeing in those concepts. It looks like Orlais is very lush and green, so I'm expecting forests and meadows and mountains, but even then, the look of a forest or a mountain depends heavily on what kind it is, so you could easily still have a lot of visual variation within the same climate.

I think an autumn forest would be neat to see, or some strange rock formations like the Giant's Causeway, or those milky blue rivers made of glacier melt.

I'm also strangely fond of desert maps, but maybe there aren't any deserts in Orlais.

I'd like Orlais(its surrounding areas mainly) to be lush, green, blue, red, with forests, mountains, trees, and water. That'd be nice.

Just very unlike DA2, where the beach was dead and brown, the mountain was dead and brown, the city was dead and brown, etc etc

Well, I don't know where we're going or what environments we're likely to see. If there are no desert or tropical climates in Thedas, then it's no good asking for them.

If I had seen those concepts back when I still thought DA3 would be running on Eclipse again, I'd have laughed out loud.

Now though, I'm thinking it might actually end up that purdy.

That's if Bioware wanted the game to look more realistic. I get the feeling they don't. DA3 won't look like BF3.

Though the environment SHOULD in my opinion. At least have BF3's solid looking environment.

I'd like it to look a little less realistic than BF3 though.

lions seem to be a motif for Orlais, maybe there's a nearby region that is similar to an african savannah with tall yellow grass plains.

Not necessarily, there's no reason to believe that must be the case.

Upon review, you are correct.

I've been mesmerized by games that didn't try the realist approach to environments before, like Kingdoms of Amalur, Fable, and even Skyrim really(though its closer than those two by miles)so in truth a game can look pretty amazing even if its not going for a real life interpretation.

As a matter of fact, games that go for a stylized approach as opposed to a "as lifelike as possible" approach tend to age much better.
