The Obvious:
DARKSPAWN ARE LIKE ORCS
The darkspawn are obviously like orcs in that they are ugly, twisted creatures that fight because their master commands them to, and no other reason.

THE ARCHDEMON IS LIKE SAURON:
The archdemon, like Sauron, is a corrupted creature, no longer what they once were. Also like Sauron, the archdemon commands the darkspawn and is the reason they fight. UNLIKE Sauron, though, he used to be a god, not simply a wizard.

DUNCAN AND WYNNE ARE LIKE GANDALF:
Duncan, like Gandalf, is like a mentor for the main character in the first act. He is introduced to The Warden in his home, some way or the other, like Gandalf. He gives the Warden a little push toward his goal, like Gandalf. He also dies, like Gandalf. UNLIKE Gandalf, however, he does not turn out to survive, nor is he a wizard. That's where Wynne comes in. Wynne is introduced, and is not male like Gandalf, but is still a lot like him in every other way. Her appearance replaces Gandalf turning out to be alive. Basically, Duncan = Gandalf the Grey, Wynne = Gandalf the White.

LOGHAIN IS LIKE SARUMAN (kind of):
Like Saruman, Loghain betrays his allies. He eventually pays for what he does, one way or the other. UNLIKE Saruman, he is royalty, not a wizard, and most importantly, NOT WORKING FOR THE PRIMARY ANTAGONIST.

ARL HOWE IS LIKE WORMTONGUE:
Arl Howe is like Wormtongue in that he betrays his allies, and betrays even MORE allies by joining Saruman/Loghain. UNLIKE Wormtongue, he does not betray Loghain in the end. He also isn't bat**** insane.

The Kind of Obvious:
KING CAILAN IS LIKE BOROMIR:
Like Boromir, King Cailan is royalty, kind of ignorant (for Boromir, who is more of a badass, he is simply that way because it is the way of man), and dies in battle due to the betrayal of Saruman/Loghain. UNLIKE Boromir, he is more childlike, stupid, and humorous.

THE WARDEN IS LIKE FRODO:
You might look nothing like Frodo, act nothing like Frodo, not even be the same gender as Frodo, but no matter what, due to a war, you are pushed out from your peaceful life into the war. Just like Frodo.

ALISTAIR IS LIKE ARAGORN, FARAMIR, MERRY, PIPPIN, AND SAM COMBINED:
Like Aragorn, Alistair is born a prince and becomes a member of a controversial order (Templars/Rangers). Like Faramir, he is the brother to fallen royalty. Like Merry and Pippin, he provides comic relief. And like Sam, he stays with you from the beginning. UNLIKE Aragorn, he doesn't have the same chivalry about him. It's also possible for him not to become king. UNLIKE Faramir, he is not the son of a neglecting father. UNLIKE Merry and Pippin, he is more skilled. And unlike Sam, he isn't as loyal.

Well, that's all I have in me for now. I'll edit it to where there's more tommorrow. That's all, folks!

Someone did not just compare one of the best characters in LOTR to that imbecile Cailan...

I'm only comparing CHARACTERISTICS, not quality of said character. I even kind of SAID that Cailan was much more moronic. I simply thought he was similar in a few qualities, that's all.

I edited the OP so that it implies that Boromir is a much better character, which he is.

I think most Western Medieval fantasy RPG's borrow elements from Tolkien. Heck, I think most Medieval fantasy anything copies Tolkien. With that said, I've noticed the similarities for a while. I still love Thedas (mostly), but after watching the Lord of the Rings movies for the first time since they came out and reading the Hobbit and Silmarillion, the creativity level in this universe seemed to drop a thousand points.

Keep in mind that many of the LotR characters that you compare DA characters to are not unique to Tolkien. Many of them represent common character archetypes that you'll find throughout most fiction, especially old myths, tales and stories, which Tolkien heavily based his work on. (The story elements themselves are often called the Monomyth, or Hero's Journey.) It's little wonder they show up again in DA:O.

With that said, I agree that DA:O might follow the LotR formula a little too closely. >>;

I do wonder whether Tolkein established these fantasy cliches or merely wrote the most sucessful incarnation of them.

I believe the devs have freely admitted The Song of Ice and Fire series (which The Game of Thrones TV series is an adaptation of) was a primary inspiration. And I can kindof see it; wardens = night watch, darkspawn = wildlings, blood magic, dragons...

Either way, the more striking similiarity I thought was the Urn of Sacred Ashes to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. That rip-off was pretty shameless right there.

But all in all, DA is still one Hell of an enjoyable ride.

The Archdemons were old Tevinter Imperium Gods that were tainted by the Darkspawn.

Sauron was not a man or a God.

--

Teyrn Loghain betrayed Cailan because he felt that he had to in order to protect Ferelden.  Saruman simply desired power.  Saruman joined the other team, whereas Loghain actually made his own team.

--

Gandalf was not a man.  I think he was actually from the same race as Sauron, in fact.

--

Boromir was the son of the Steward of Gondor.  I do not think that you can compare this to an actual King.  I also do not think that he and Cailan are alike at all.  Cailan is a bit of a dreamer, whilst Boromir is a total badass and does not have to dream.

--

The Warden being like Frodo is probably the most absurd of all, as The Warden is whoever you want him/her to be.  Also, The Warden is not forced to leave his life as he can willingly leave it.

You can probably find similarities in prettty much any adventure story if you go looking for them.  I do not think Dragon Age is anything like tLOTR.

^ This is the reason I didn't update. I didn't consider any of this. I found a couple of similarities, and overthought everything.
If it's a possible feature, I'm going to lock or delete this thread. If not, I'll just let it rot away.
Peace.
