That was my reaction. Let's forget the lifes of the men and women under your command, just stay and fight to the death for the sake of your petty honour.bleetman wrote...

Coward's tactic -- no thank you.
Yes, one should have their battle strategy and supplys planned before venturing out. Running away is cowardly and dishonorable.
No. The coward is the person not willing to Hold the line.
A real soldier holds their ground even when the enemy forces seem to be overwhelming.

Respect however is universal and eternal.I'd rather go down taking out as much of the enemy as possible than run like a coward.

Because a real soldier knows if you die, you can just reload a previous save and try again with no negative consequences whatsoever
Anyway, back on topic. I think if zones are bigger in DA3, leashing is a simple but relatively effective solution for retreating. If we're talking more tactical combat (retreating and setting up ambushes, that sort of thing), I wonder if the AI will be good enough to pull that off, both in terms of setting up retreats and responding to PC attempts to retreat.
TBH the AI in Dragon Age games is mediocre at best--I think I'd rather have no retreat option at all than deal with a poorly implemented one.

Why should it make them feel better? One knows the risk when entering a career full of combat.

If you know your overwelmed then there is no use in keep fighting. But If you value your "honour" more then the lives of the soldiers you serve with then I call you a very bad soldier

That's where this thing called scouting comes into play.

But... but... in DA2 there is no scouting to speak of. Also parachuters make it kinda difficult to scout.

This is most obvious in the Prologue (really long map).
Also doable for example in the Wilmod fight (Enemies Among Us) in Act 1. Cast a Gravitic Ring at Wilmod's feet as soon as combat starts (but make sure not to block your party), move your party back to the entrance of the map, and you will go out of combat. Cullen will continue to fight the demons himself (as he's invincible). It takes him about 45 minutes to kill all the demons by himself (during which time you can leave your PC/Console and go jogging or eat dinner). Surprisingly, the Rage Demon survives till the end instead of Wilmod.
Edit: This is also trivially easy if you play as a solo Rogue with Stealth/Decoy.

You can retreat in DA2. Most of you just never bothered to do it. Move your party a sufficient distance away from enemies and you will disengage and go into non-combat state.

You need to cast a Gravitic Ring asap and prevent them from moving beyond the first choke point (in the Wilmod fight as well as a few others). So I'm afraid you have to play a Mage Hawke.MichaelStuart wrote...

Or it could work with a Rogue's Decoy.
I could make a screenshot of Cullen fighting Wilmod on his own if you want. I can't make videos though.
