This dlc really feels like cheating lol.

It makes their approval rating go through the roof and it also seems to further character development conversation.

Therefore, I have a question..

I've just finished Lothering and have had my first "bad dream" about the darkspawn at the camp. Alistair waking me up by the camp fire.

Should I wait until further into the story to give everyone the gifts?

Especially with Alastair because he asks your opinion about everybody but I don't have Zevran yet.

I think Alistair only asks your opinion about other companions, after you've asked him what it was like with the other Grey Wardens.
EDIT. As for the gifts, its entirely upto you and how you wish to play the game. Word of warning; Do NOT give Leliana the Fat Lute because you run the risk of not being able to do her personal quest due to a bug.

Okay, so maybe don't ask him about the Grey Wardens until after recruiting everyone?

As far as the romances go though, can the Feastday Gifts make you lock onto one romance rather than pursue two at the same time?

If the +50 Approval will put you at or over the point where a romanced companion will confront you about other romances, then yes, you will be forced to decide. (But if the approval bump is something you really don't want - and I usually don't - then use the prank gift to negate it.)

And yes, if you don't ask Alistair about the Grey Wardens, he won't initiate the juicy gossip conversation.

Okay, thanks guys, I will save the Wardens talk for once I've recruited Zevran... OH btw... So far I have Leliana, Sten, Morrigan, Alistair. That leaves Zevran, are there any other companions? Oh and my Mabari but he hardly counts :P

Just wondering because I wont initiate the "juicy gossip" convo until I have everyone.

The companions Alistair will want to gossip about are Morrigan, Leliana, Sten, Zevran, and Oghren.

Where do you get Oghren from?

...and there's an extra companion from The Stone Prisoner DLC if you have it. Which I recommend, because I LOVE that character. :-D

As for Feastday Gifts and Pranks, I don't bother with them at all. They seem silly, immersion-breaking and potentially game-breaking too. I say ignore them. My tuppenceworth.

But... but... THE STICK!  Dog needs his Stick! :(

the stick did nothing for me as dog's affection was already maxed. So alistair will only ask about the main 5 characters and no one else?

Yes. Those are the only companions Alistair will ask about.

The Warden (or any of the companions, save Shale) can throw the Stick, and Dog will retrieve it. So yes, there is no approval bump, but it's darned cute to watch.

And gifting the stick boosts dog's dexterity by 6.

Don't usually bring old topics back, but being this is the first time I've been back to DA:O since before awakening came out, and just now finding the feast stuff, I find myself confused. Some of these items seem nice, although if given to the wrong character it's the same as a prank.

That aside, this question is what I came to find out. More to the point, with the rocket of rating, does it kill dialogue trees that would otherwise have shown up with the smaller increments? Does it break any quests?

For the moment I've used the gifts on Morrigan and Sten with no plans to do so on others. While I like both of their characters, I find naturally balancing their approval a pain in the porcelain-altar-end, especially, for instance when you get to redcliff. I considered replacing those two with Wynn and Alistair, but frankly I think Wynn is a crotchety old windbag, and while I don't mind Alistair, he's not as interesting as some other characters.

So, is it safe to use this stuff, or is it more of a "I want to keep them and happy, so lettem take the decision hits and bandaid it with the item" scenario?

I have done a bit of testing on some of this, and while I do not yet know if it breaks the personal quests of the characters, what I do know is that giving them any of the feast prank items does break some dialogue. In the case of Morrigan doing so removes the 'join me in the tent' option permanently from my observations.

I think the only item from the feast dlc that I care to use is the 'thoughtful gift'. That does a +10, which isn't as bad as the other items involved. You cannot, however, even give rotten onions for a -10 and still join her in the tent, so given that...I'd tread lightly if you do not wish to break anything.

I use them to unlock dog plot skills. He gets an buff to dexterity.

I agree with you that the Feastday stuff completely shortcircuits and trivialises the whole approval system, and using them feels like cheating.

It's far more rewarding (in my opinion) to get to know the companions slowly, as the game progresses, gradually gaining friendship and insights into their personalities, rather than using what is essentially an 'I win' button.

That's why I generally tend to ignore the Feastday gifts. They remain in Bhodan's store, unpurchased and unused. I'll just buy a single rotton onion and a cake in order to remove the quests from my inventory.

I used them when I bought the Ultimate Edition. It felt like I cheated though, and I believe it messed up some of the companion dialogue. Best to just avoid it as it gives you very little in actual content. :police:
