Side note, as I haven't done my research (and won't unless I have to), what items should I be making sure I have for the ToB portion of the game?

The short answer is whatever you can bring in your Bag of Holding.

Without going into the nth degree my thoughts would be;
- Superior healing potions. Extra healing too if you have room. There may be battles where you glug say 20 of them so I would fill up with whatever you can afford or store once you have everything else.
- Other potions can be very light in ToB. E.g. I found 1 absorbtion potion,
- Items giving physical resistances that you can equip.
- Items with elemental resistances. e.g. fire resistance rings, helm of defence, potion of cold resistance.
- Items you can use to summon aid. e.g. Kitthix, Berserk Warrior, Air Elemental, Genie, etc.
- Items with Negative Plane Protection, charm protection (handy when raged out), that mirror image/heal, etc.
- Items with specific attacks, e.g. Sunray, fireball.
- A few shields. Reflection, beholders (if improved Abazigals lair).
- A variety of weapons covering blunt, slashing, piercing, melee, ranged, offhand. Flai of Ages is a good example.
- A few sets of armour to cover best AC or physical/elemental benefits.
- Ring of Gaxx, Boots of Speed/Avoidance, cloak of reflection/mirroring/displacement/+2.
- Girdles; Inertial, piercing, crushing and golden.

Quick Note on Abigail's Game:

After a two hour battle, Abigail, Cleric, follower of Marthammor Duin, has defeated Ascension Melissan.

I'll post on the battle tomorrow evening. For now, I need sleep...

Best,

I'm considering an attempt of watchers keep levels 1 and 2. Getting the fourth head for the FoA would be pretty awesome. That said, it has been so long I don't really remember what to expect.

Hmm, wow. Cleared all but the last fight of Watcher's Keep level 1. The statues are summoning multiple Cacofiends, and I have 3 Bonefiends constantly teleporting on me. I'll have to wait and figure something out, they're currently a bit much for my 14 Barbarian.

I'm now contemplating spellhold, as I'm sick of being without a bag of holding. That said, I may hold off for a little while as I want to get the silver dragon blood to finish my human skin armor, and have similar doubts about killing him. I may take care of Firkraag (if I can) as a test first.

Edit: Reload count is now 14

Kraitok, noone will will lift an eye brow if you feel like importing a bag of holding. It is an inventory management item at best and many simple import one from the prison, especially in a solo challenge where you have so little inventory space it feels very fair to do.

Alesia, congratulations!! How many of your oils of speed did you end up using? =)

Cleared all but the Shadow Lord from the shadow dungeon quest line. Died once to the Shadow Dragon as I didn't know he could drain levels (10 levels per hit, lol?). Also died to the shade lord once as he doesn't seem to run out of buffs. Will be bringing an enhanced flail or morningstar when I go back since he seems to have a rediculous amount of casts of PFMW.

. I wouldn't have been able to kill any trolls otherwise without the +fire damage on it.

Pick up any bow, and there's no shortage of acid and fire arrows inside the keep.

as I didn't know he could drain levels (10 levels per hit, lol?)

Level drain is part of his breath weapon, and it can hit more than once per application. You're not able to wear the amulet of power, and have no access to the NPP spell, so your best shot is the iMoD...but you'll likely want that no matter what, just to deal with the vampires and liches.

Great job Alesia! I'm not going to lie, I felt that solo cleric would be quite a challenge, perhaps impossible to solo Ascension SCS....but here you are :-)

Are you considering another run?

@Gate70: You definitely deserve major congrats as well. Your tenacity blows mine away and I think I'll have to draw inspiration from your run here.

Full set bags, holding, potion, scroll, gem, ammunition.
Full set potions.
Full set protection scrolls.
Full set boots elemental resistance, & speed
Aeger's Hide until you get the human flesh
Azureedge axe
Improved mace disruption
Flail Ages
Flail Easthaven
Crom faeyr - mostly for bashing doors & containers
Black Razor
Belm
Belt inertial barrier
Vhailor's helm
Kitthix, Staff fire earth air
Upgraded Horn Valhalla
Shield Harmony - for when rages run out
Mind flayer control circlet
Rings regen, protection +2, fire control, fire resistance
Gauntlets Extra specialisation
Bow Gesen
XBow firetooth
Daystar
Ring of Gaxx is nice to have but may be beyond your ability to aquire.

Good luck. I've got the advantage on you that my dwarven saves are much better than yours, but you should hit level 40 by early ToB. Go for about 8-10 hardinesses, 6-8 gww, one smite, and the rest critical strike.

Kraitok, you can't use the AoP so you might as well side with the vamps and take on the thieves to get hold of a nice ring.

Thanks for the comments and congratulations everyone!

Apologies for the delay in posting the final battle (real life infringing, should have time tomorrow, maybe this evening).

Continued best wishes for the actives!

A.

@Shadow_Leech. Yes, I'm considering another run. I'm thinking of building a character that can Trilogy No Reload, and then do this challenge on Insane like Alanis did. That's much harder in SCS of course. I should probably give Alyssa a shot at this challenge on Insane before building a new character.

Hey

Keep meaning to post pictures but not getting round to it.

Here's Gromnir

Posted Image

Then off to the Keep, and endless attempts against the Chromatic demon. I had far too few of these:

Posted Image

.. and far too many of these:

Posted Image

So I went and did the Tactics ritual, I was pleased to take out at least one of the three units at the end:

Posted Image

However when I now return to the keep to take out the Tactics yellow dragon, the Tactics poison encounter triggers. I died twice to that, so I headed off to the swamp to meet Nyalee. I think the shade ambush got me once, then I brought in a simmy from Vhailor's helm, and it was easy. I then underestimated the skellys, and died to them about 5 times.

Then off to the fire giants, no deaths so far, and it appears that blunt damage is actually healing me. I thought this was 'fixed' by one or other mod, certainly I've never had it happen before.

Currently through spellhold on Shazrak. Died once to Irenicus when cloned Shazrak got a celestial fury stun through right after rage wore off.

Also started a Sorcerer just to change it up some. I'm not sure how viable this will be ultimately as there are plenty of magic resistant enemies later, but I'll give it a shot.

Abigail v. Mel and The 5

Ok, so here it is (finally): Abigail's battle with Mel and The 5.

I'll note at outset that I'm considering having Abigail do this again, because I wasn't entirely pleased with Mel's behavior in the finishing sequence: I don't feel as through she got the full SCS-Ascension experience. Nonetheless, here's the battle as it happened. For the record, this was the 6th try including the crash.

The Plan: Streamline the spellbook with an empahsis on low casting time spells: AoF and Doom at 1, DUHM at 2, Dispel Magic at 3, Poison at 4, CC at 5, Harm at 6, Firestorms at 7. Setup the inventory as below.
Posted Image

Maintain a movement rate advantage using Boots of Speed + Oil of Speed and fight with the Sling. Before Mel's arrival, chew through The 5's Stoneskins and healing. After the skins and healing are drained, make significant progress on Abazgial, Sendai, and Yaga Shura before killing one of them. Trigger Mel's arrival by finishing Abazigal so that he won't be in a position to Breach away Focus before Mel's Time Stop.

Switch up the inventory when Mel arrives.
Posted Image

Keep your Aura clear and listen for Praeses- being sure to hit each Focus. Restrict non-essential spell equivalent action usage to times when Mel has either a clouded Aura or no access to Time Stop. Look for opportunities to unload Firestorms- perhaps with the assitance of a kite- but expect to rely on the Sling assisted by Dispel Magic. Manage Bone Blade damage using Easthaven and Armor of Faith- being sure to keep hitpoint above 60 to thwart PW:K.

Execution: The battle went according to plan for the most part but there were a few wrinkles: some good, some bad.

Abigail's Sendai's Skins and Heals were Abigail's first objectives. An opening Sling bullet let Sendai know that she was marked. Everad was used in the Stoneskin chewing phase.
Posted Image

Sendai's Time Stop via Wish was foiled with Focus, her Implosion -injudicously cast during Time Stop- was foiled by Ages.
Posted Image

Abigail used Sendai's Time Stop to work on Abazigal's spellbook with Everad's Morning Star. Sendai made a little progess with Wilting during the Time Stop, but the damage was quickly healed.
Posted Image

While wearing through Sendai's Skins, Abigail got some most welcome help from Yaga-Shura. Thanks big fella!
Posted Image

Through the Skins into the Heals.
Posted Image

Keeping the pressure up.
Posted Image

Once Sendai's Heals were tapped -and therefore couldn't be cast on the high hitpoint, high resistance Yaga- Abigail went to work on him. Doom->Poison helped speed things up though casting it felt dicey given the spell's middling casting time and poor range.
Posted Image

The vanilla version of Harm works beautifully on Yaga. The SCS version, less so...
Posted Image

Once Yaga joined Sendai in Near Death territory, Abigail went to work on Abazigal. Unexpectedly, it was a Yaga Lava Bomb that finished him.
Posted Image

With Abazigal's death, Mel appeared, Abigail turned and fired a sling bullet to end Sendai (no screenshot).

Now, while everything seems to be going smoothly at this point, Abigail was actually in grave danger. The timing of Abazigal's death put Abigail in the awkward position of being too far from Mel when she arrived- risking a silent Time Stop cast. Seeing Mel waving her hand -and knowing that Mel often casts Time Stop just after arrival- Abigail chose to use her Focus ability. Big mistake: Mel wasn't casting Time Stop- raising the possibility that Abigail wouldn't have Focus available when Mel did cast.

The dreaded moment came -Abigal heard "praeses" with her focus used. What to do: how can Mel be interrupted?

Abigail (unequip The Reflex)
Illasera: Red Slayers!
Abigail (re-equip The Reflex)
Illasera-  Death
Melissan- Weakened
Melissan- Spell Failed: Casting Failure
Abigail- Phew!

With that hurdle cleared, it was time to take down Gromnir and Sarevok. "With friends like these" the pair thought...
Posted Image

Sling bullets finished them.
Posted Image

Yaga was next.
Posted Image
Posted Image

And then Mel.

Her first Time Stop was countered with Focus.
Posted Image

Oddly though, Mel Teleported Without Error to the North and then parked as per the original Ascension. She fought well when parked -using her Bone Blades and other abilities as expected- but the casting window was a huge boon since it gave Abigail a chance to use her Firestorms. They took Mel down to Badly Injured- saving at least an hour of real time.
Posted Image

Sling bullets and Dispel Magic Finished her.
Posted Image

Fin!
Posted Image

In the next few days, I'll likely have Abigail try the fight again. Hopefully she'll get more aggressive behavior out of Mel this time.

Best,

A.

Congrats, always a joy to see your wins.

I'm afraid I don't know what the 'Reflex' is, or how it killed Illasera.

Was this on insane? I don't see the infinite demons that made Ascension so very likely to crash just as that light started appearing at the end of the tunnel.

Opps: Sorry Potty1!

The Reflex is my idiosyncratic nickname for the Reflection Shield.

As for the difficulty, it wasn't Insane: it was just Core. It's pretty hard for me to imagine Abigail winning on Insane...

@Alesia: A pretty nice approach and looks so simple from your story (as if the only thing the Five did was catching Abigail's rocks...).

When the going gets tough, it often makes sense to go simple.

Abigail's approach was deliberate and minimalistic by design. It's trickier to execute then it might seem from the screenshots, but definitely uncomplicated.

Great read Alesia! You have a very clean strategy and very helpful as well.

Unfortunate that harm doesn't work on Yaga Shura.

I too am playing a cleric-ish character but she is nowhere near Ascension at the moment. I'll post some details later if she survives.
