I guess they're meant to build hype.
But then, alot of the time actual gameplay never really compares to the badassery of the cinematics. DA2 is a perfect example: I wish the Arishok fight was actually that awesome.
The Sacred Ashes trailer was a bit better in that at least you see the party taking out mooks with ease (something you can actually do in game).
riddle me this what is the point of a CGI trailer in the first place?

Build fake hype that will be no where like the real game.

To generate interest in the game while the game is being designed.

most of it is to hype with something that never in the game...
look at "destiny" and "take earth back" trailer, both were good example.

For me, CGI trailers are great...for hype. But I do see them as unecessary. Look at the Witcher 2 and hell! Even Skyrim. Their gameplay trailers (well, 'gameplay' being turned into something more cinematic) were very cool and did more for me than a bloody CGI trailer.

Well...only an idiot will believe that CGI cinematics will parallel actual gameplay. The falseness of that hype lies within the individual.

Not fair I used to be an idiot The This is war CGI trailer for DAO made me buy it thinking it was going to be soooo cool. I loaded up the game and the contrast between the trailer and the game made me question whether I had bought the correct game. It took a while to get over my disappointment I played through 3 origin stories before I was sufficu=iently hooked
Fem City elf for the win!
NOW I know the CGI trailers are not the same as gameplay I personally whish they would not make them. Let the games stand on their own merits. So many players make AMV's out of actual in game footage and yet Bioware can't do the same well enough to sell their game? I don't think so.
Its a cheap trick employed by the publisher to sell more games and IMO a waste of resources that should instead be poured into the game itself.

I really don't understand why Bioware/EA doesn't emphasize the gender/attitude/story customization and reactivity in its more main-stream marketing. Sure, I knew I could customize my character and that the companion interaction is heavily emphasized...
but only because my little brother bought KotOR many years ago. Otherwise the games wouldn't have caught my eye.
Still, a basic CGI trailer is much better than this little "let's build hype" attempt.

The trailer doesn't usually sell the game. The trailer just prompts one to take notice of the game and search for more information.
