http://www.qj.net/pc...an-vitriol.html

I was shocked to read this article saying that the reason for the two top Bioware people leaving wasn't because of EA, but because fan reactions to the last two games, namely TOR and MA3 were so negative.

I've read a lot of negative posts in the years I've been on these forums, but I never realized how much influence they may have. I hope this article is just a bid for attention, not the real reason Greg and Ray left.

I would definitely take articles like this with a grain of salt. However it would be foolish to think that the amount of vitriol (most of it unwarranted) thrown Bioware's way did not affect these guys on a personal level to some extent, they are people after all with dignity and feelings.

But most of the complaints have been....about EA...
They are fools if they think we hate them. We hate their bosses.

While I definitely do not trust that article completely, I must also admit I would not be surprised if it is correct.

Difference between "negative reaction" and apocalyptic hyperbole from enraged "fans."

So they didn't actually interview Ray or Greg, they interviewed someone who *used* to work for Bioware, over 3 years ago, in, quote, "senior positions" who commented that Ray and Greg "seemed" exhausted over fan reactions to games that, I believe, weren't even released in 2009 . . .

Ray has already debunked this on Twitter. It's false.

Yes, most of the vitriol was aimed at EA, after all the haters have to find a scapegoat, but just read some of the posts vilifying ME3, and TOR, and you begin to wonder just how much the founders of a company like Bioware can accept before it becomes too much.

Those "fans" you speak of saw a company that's made some of the best games ever do a complete 180 and started turning out poor products. Dramatic, sure but their claims are all very accurate. The founders saw the direction their company was taking and probally decided they had lost control of it. Now we just have to hope it can get back on track.

They probably left because they now each have enough money for a champagne hot tub.

I call BS too. You need a thick skin in the game industry, and I've never known anyone to quit because of fan reaction.

I find that people on these forums can be particularly harsh for no good reason, other than personal disappointment. I understand being unhappy with a product and voicing concerns, but the manner in which a majority of the criticism is frequently done is so self-centered and negative. In my opinion, the "failure" (which is more subjective in this context) is not on the heads of these 2 gentlemen alone. When a product that has many people involved in fails, it can be for many reasons. Unfortunately, those near the top are almost always blamed. Such is the nature of business...I never played TOR, but I was a little disappointed with the original, non-epilogue ending to ME3. But that doesn't mean I wanted anyone to step down. Let's hope these men are on to bigger and better things.

Cmon now y'all. Dem BioWare folk are a bits thin-skinned and need nonstop support and encouragement to continue to disappoint you.

All the scapegoating that has being going on of late is ridiculous. So it's our fault now. Lol. Sorry honey, I don't buy it.

Have they ever wonder why the fans react negatively before ( specifically DA 2 )? When they create their game "passionately" have they ever consult the fans on how the ending, the story and character should be presented? What make them so confidently thinks that bitter endings would work well with the goal they set up for players? I'm not asking for "walking over the sunset" but the entire ME series was about opposing the reapers. So, why ended it with something else in the last 15 minutes? I don't play ME 3 but I've watched the endings so I can understand why people are upset.

Seriously, if you drive your players into specific goals, make sure you close that with proper endings and not deviate into somethings else just for your bitter endings to work. If the mission is about stopping a villain then you better make sure the players accomplish that mission by stopping the said villain and not about painting the sky with one of the three different colors.

This apply to DA series as well.

Senior executives at Bioware are way too busy to read the forums.

Hey, look, consequences to people people behaving badly. If this is true...well, I understand it. Kind of depressing, but I understand it.

I wonder if Steve Jobs consulted his buyers and paid attention toany negativity when running Apple. Sure buyers have a right to express their disappointment in a product they spent good $'s on, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. Some posters just seem to want to vent their anger no matter what the subject is, and this doesn't help a company improve their product, or encourage the developers to adopt even the good ideas.

This article implies the founders of BioWare actually checked out mentally 5 years ago, and just stayed on to make the transition go smoothly. Once their contract was up . . . out the door.

http://www.wired.com...ors-retirement/

So if this were the case, this nonsense about the fans driving them out is, well, nonsense as the founders were already mentally checked out 5 years ago.

BUT . . . it's all speculation. The only people who know why they left are Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk.
