I was having trouble earlier with varathorn not selling me anything but i finished the quest and sided with the elves and that problem is now solved.  Another problem I am having is Morrigan.  She has some nice spells and can be useful but she dies in literally every fight i get into.  My character(human noble warrior), alistair, and shale never die but every time I try to switch to Morrigan to use cone of cold or something she is already dead.  Any tips on how I can maybe stop that at least a little bit?

First, keep her out of the front line of the action. Second, get her the best equipment you can afford/that is available to you. Without naming specific items, things that boost constitution or dexterity (so she has more health or can avoid attacks), or that add a boost to healing or to health regeneration (especially in combat).

Third, IF you have a pc, use the respec mod to remove the useless and wasted shapeshifting talents (you can leave her as a shapeshifter for roleplaying purposes if you want, just don't give her any shapeshifing talents).

Fourth, give her Heal (but only that first spell in that line, the rest are wasted imo), if you make her a spirit healer you can add those healing skills which help both her and other party members. If you make her an arcane warrior she can tank. Of course, if you dump shapeshifting altogether she can do both.

Fifth, crowd control is crucial, this neutralises mobs and prevents her from taking too much damage. The line that includes death magic/death cloud can both heal her and damage the enemy. The sleep/nightmare line can also control large numbers of enemies, putting them out of action. The line ending in mass paralysis is not too shabby either. Entropy is your friend.

There are other things too, but those are the basics.

Now that I think about it, I don't quite understand how Morrigan never dies in my games... She always has the aggro (Darn Alistair and his bad tanking? lol j/k)

I guess Wynne just always keeps her health up, I never pay that much attention to her Haha...

Try adding a tactics slot for drinking a health poultice, or using whatever her AoE spell is that knocks back enemies around her when she gets attacked?

Or simply add a tactics slot to Alistair / Shale to intercept anybody that attacks your mage. That should solve the problem simply and quickly (=

Send your tank into battle first, don't start out battles by using AoE damage spells. Have your tank set to taunt when Morrigan gets attacked.

Set Morrigan's first tactic to using a healing potion, casting heal, or using drain health whenever her health is below 50% (or set tactics for all three in case one of these is on cooldown when she needs it). Set another tactic (or two or three) to cast a debilitating spell upon whoever is attacking her by melee (Horror, Paralyze, etc.). Set another tactic to use Mind Blast if she is surrounded by three or more enemies. If you see Morrigan taking melee attacks and not escaping by these tactics, switch to her and use cone of cold, waking nightmare, sleep, or another such spell to disable enemies.

It's a tactical thing, I believe. Morrigna rarely gets punked in my fights, because of how I approach battle, I believe. First, find her robes that increase her defense as much as possible. Second, I always select the entire party and attack the first foe as my first move, then I immediately pause and select individual members to do stuff. Getting into this habit means that, when you encounter something particularly difficult and kind of lose focus right away thinking how to approach it, Morrigan stays at distance and attacks with her staff, giving you time to plan her move (for me, usually moving to a good angle and CoC everything)...additionally, she can use Force Field from way back there is necessary....
