Here's the way I see it...
Original EC, the fate of Shepard was very much ambiguous. All we got was the breath scene and that was it. However when Bioware mentioned the Extended Cut, a lot of fans including myself were intrigued at what Bioware would do with the High EMS Destroy ending. Would they actually show Shepard rise from the rubble? Would we get that reunion scene that a lot of fans have been begging for? Would we even get a hint of a reunion scene? Maybe a wee little epilogue slide on it? We had to wait and see.
Then came the EC endings. What we got was our LI refuse to put Shepard's name on the wall and we got the same exact breath scene. That's it. HOWEVER! Bioware mods and staff such as Tully Ackerland and Michael Gamble stated that Shepard is IN FACT alive at the end of EC Destroy.
So huzzah! We didn't get that reunion scene, but at the very least the record was set straight. Commander Shepard is alive! But then came the Bioware Panel...
Here Chris Hepler announced that "LOL NOPE! It could've been his final breath" and then Gamble backpeddled on his previous statement to say "LOL he could be alive! But then a hanging beam could fall down and impale him TROLOLOLOL!" Shortly after that, Chris Priestly on the forums says that the High EMS Destroy ending is back to being ambigous and the fate of Shepard is unknown.
1 step forward, 1 step back. We have returned to "Speculations for everyone!" because apparently Bioware wasn't really paying attention to how pissed off fans were about the ambiguity of that ending. It was kinda hard to miss.

At any rate this is going off topic and has little to do with the final breath scene.
Selene, the final breath scene itself is off-topic. In fact, the number of on-topic posts to this thread (i.e. those pertaining to the story and possible future of Refund Guy) wouldn't even fill a single page out of the 11 so far. Best just to do as I do, and sit back in quiet bemusement as this thread, like so many others on the fora, gets completely derailed by those discontented folks who use any thread they can to complain about the endings.

Bioware knew from the start the fans didn't want closure just mass speculations.
