After learning BioWare's plan to take over your character in future installment, I don't know if it worth the effort anymore.

Meh. You couldn't change sex or name in Planescape: Torment. (Yes, yes, overused I know. But it's a bloody good RPG... infact, that's a huge understatement.)

I always try to make my warden's names fit in with their origin. Dwarves get dwarven sounding names influenced by other dwarf names in DA, same for elves, etc... so it feels like they actually belong in the world and came from their roots.

And for Hawke, I try to think of names that fit in with Carver and Bethany without being too modern.
So I guess I'll have to wait and see what the new protagonist's situation is...

I'd rather have Bioware pick a fixed first name instead of a fixed last name.
But if not then I might name him one of these:
"Culver" meaning "Dove" to go with my Cully!<3
"Morgan" it's sexy, hmmm...;)
"Jaden"
"Ellis" L4D2...
"Skyler"
"Ronnie"
"Dustin"

I thought I was the only one! It really bothers me that they only called the protagonists of ME and DA2 by their last names.

I usually just stick with the default name. I hate coming up with names.

I've been using this insult-turned-nickname from my youth: "Death." (I wore all black. Yeah, I was that girl...)

I thought it was fitting. Meet, the Grey Warden, Death. Then there's Death Hawke (my personal favorite). And soon ... Death-whatever in DA3.

You?

How about "Darth Death"? Sounds perfect to me.

Does that mean we are related?

Maybe, but don't give me the Goldanna treatment if I decide to pull an Alistair.;)

I promise not to pop out tons of kids I can't feed and then whine about it later.

I like to pick names that flow well with the surname, if it's a set one. I also like to keep factors like race and country of origin in mind so that the whole name sounds appropriate together in context. So I'm gonna have to know more about the player character in 3 before I come up with some good ones.

My name (trista) works well in most video games where I can pick a name. If the protag is strictly, only male, I can just throw an "N" on the end of it and suddenly I've moved into dude territory.

Yes! I mean these names that we give our prtagonist have no mentions in the game and are not used at all, it'd be so great to have a fixed first name instead of a last name to avoid those awkward situations where your LI or friend calls you with your last name
and for formal situations they can just use the title. (like commander, warden, champion, sir, Mis/Mr,Inquisitor...etc)

I hope the protagonist is not orleasian. Even if the game is there, I want to play as a ferelden or a free marcher or a tevinter. I really really don't want to listen to french accents through the entire game.

Also, someone needs to drop the " Princess Consuela Banana Hammock" name change reference.

Done.

lol. I agree. The frequent use of the surname is somewhat "college" isn't it? Like, yo Hawke, bro, let's fistbump.

But if the first name is fixed, then I guess people wouldn't be able to name their character. However... they could just fix the first name (and use it in dialogue) and let the player pick a last name!

Maybe give like ten options for each gender.

That's exactly what I'm saying, the players can pick the last name but the first name should be picked by Bioware imo.

They can give a unique and unisex name to the protagonist.
Or they could pick several names and make a poll to let the players pick the name that is to their liking.

No. No, no, no, no, no. I don't want to play a pre-gen character. I could pick up another game and 90% of the time it would have a pre-gen character. I like creating my own character. I want to play as my own character. With a name I choose. It's bad enough they shove a voice down my throat for it, but if they pick the name, then NO.

If they allow spaces in the name (Bioware has in all other games, don't know why they would start blocking them now), then Fast Jimmy. It's my handle for everything.

If they don't allow spaces or I'm going for a second character, I'll go Demongo, my second name I use pretty regularly.

Demongo Shepherd, Demongo Hawke and Demongo Cousland were all very ugly, mean SOBs.

Well, a lot of people raged about the fans choosing the "barbie" as female Shepard's default face, and it wasn't even needed to use that face. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it, though.

I'll do what I usually do and go here for a name appropriate to origin that sounds nice.
