So you Pro-Blood Magic people would be fine if I started cutting up your mom or kid brother - because I needed something.
I was thinking more along the lines of using templars to fuel blood magic rituals.

That's like saying swords are evil because Vaughan's soldiers used them to kidnap women out of the Alienage in broad daylight.

Some of us simply point out that blood magic isn't evil; it's all in how you use it. Locating the Eluvian or cleansing a shard isn't evil. Using your own blood to protect the people you love isn't evil. Had my Surana Warden used mind control to prevent Vaughan from kidnapping women from the Alienage, would that be evil?

I fully support mages cutting themselves for blood magic... hopefully they'll hit a vein.
Blood magic makes sense since templars can nullify the abilities of a mage otherwise.

Erm, quite a lot, really. Mind control can be quite useful for nonlethal combat, especially law enforcement. Control over blood could have fascinating medical applications. Easier access to the Fade has its plusses, though we may need more research to learn the true potential of that. And, of course, it's extremely useful for fighting templars.Medhia Nox wrote...

Makes me wonder if Seekers are actually blood mages/warriors. The darkest secret of the Chantry lol fight fire with fire, blood magic with blood magic.Xilizhra wrote...

@LobselVith8: I can see your viewpoint - but you would only doom every mage with your madness. Which - as a mage player - I would oppose you.
And - Blood Magic doesn't "weaken" the Veil.. it opens it... allowing demons to wantonly prey upon the populace.
This utterly self-serving and wreckless act alone makes any blood mage worthy of a swift death.
Templars are a danger to mages... blood mages are a danger to everyone..

1) Blood magic is far little danger than templars.
2) Demons are not all crazy maniacs, some of them are reasonable and itelligent. I do not see any problems with communicating or dealing with them.

Better than killing them.@Xilizhra: Mind control - seriously? You're okay with mind control!? Do you even live in a remotely free country in real life?

@KainD: All demons are based off the weakest human traits. If you're fine getting attacked and possessed by a wrath demon - then you should expose yourself to it - not everyone else.
And what danger are Templars to normal people? Sure - you could say they're an army... but everyone nation on Thedas has one of those.
Blood magic weakens the Veil... is used for mind control - promotes concepts like slavery (for easy access to magic) - and results in consorting with demons... there is next to nothing that is beneficial to the non-magical person.

I'm referring to temporary mind control as being a better solution than death.@Xilizhra: For someone who values "mage freedom" - you certainly have little regard for other's freedom.

Yeah, but we don't have non-magical people care about mage freedom. They were okay with mages being part of the circle for a thousand years.
I say mages don't owe anyone anything, and should all study blood magic for their own personal gain. Until templars are defeated or people accept their freedom atleast, maybe then mages will have more reasons to think about common folk more.

If you ever start limiting even the freedom to choose death over obedience (something even mages have) - then you become FAR worse than any Circle institution has ever been.
The "time limit" of the removal of Free Will is irrelevant.

Say I have someone barricaded in a building with a gun, with hostages. Wouldn't the best solution for all be to force him into surrender via a brief bit of mind control? No actual violence required, no deaths on either side.KainD wrote...

Mind control could have been used to stop Vaughan from raping Shianni. It can be used against the darkspawn.

Actually, the lore reads, "The effects can be vile, but this specialization isn't limited to madmen and monsters. Many see it as the only form of magic that is truly free, because it's tied to the physical, not favors to spirits or demons." It's tied to "the physical" because it's an issue of using blood instead of mana, and what weakens the Fade is a significant amount of death in a certain area, whether magic is involved or not.

I don't share your view on blood mages, especially since there are altruistic blood mages who aren't abusing their abiltiies.

As far as NPCs go - the majority of senior mages are Aequatarian (at least in Ferelden). Those Aequatarians aren't going to go along with a mage rebellion... and more than likely won't be studying blood magic.

The Aequatarians sided with dissolution of the Circle as of Dragon Age: Asunder. Without blood magic, granted, but consorting with Cole has got to count for something.
EDIT: I'm always behind on these things.

Mostly it was because they believed the mages could no longer have an adequate future in the Circles after everything that had happened.Medhia Nox wrote...
I stand corrected - did they (the Aequatarian faction) give a reason? Other than - "The Templars hurt my feelings and wouldn't let me sacrifice innocent people for power." ?

If the synopsis I just read is true - then will Dragon Age 3 even be about the templar/mage war? Is it resolved in the book? ((Which I obviously have to read.))

Well - that was idiotically short sighted of them - I bet the nations of Thedas aren't going to suddenly say: "Oh, you fought a war on our soils... scorched and spoiled the land - terrorized our people - ruined our economies and exposed us to invasion. But SURE - you deserve your freedom."

It explains why the Circles of Magi emancipated themselves from the Chantry of Andraste, and why the Seekers of Truth and the Order of Templars split from the Chantry. It's basically the inception to the Templar-Mage War; I think certain facts change depending on what the respective Warden and Champion have done, since there are some characters who might be dead depending on what you did.

Depending on whether they know the protagonist is a mage or not, I'm certain the reactions will vary. Hopefully, it won't be handled like it was in Dragon Age II, with the mage protagonist being an 'invisible mage.'
On that note, I'm actually hoping for an arcane warrior/battlemage spec that can avoid being recognized a mage to a degree.

Nah, the official statement of defiance is at the very end. I still doubt DA3 will only concern the M/T war, though.
Also, the mages were responding to paranoia on behalf of the templars who were afraid of the fact that their precious Rite of Tranquility could be reversed. The Circles were given the right to convene and Lord Seeker Lambert begins a slaughter, claiming that the meeting is treason despite the fact that the Divine herself gave them permission to gather.
Short-sighted is the previous insistance that "If we prove we're not a threat, then we'll earn our freedom." Which hadn't worked for around eight hundred years.
