How about someday, maybe not for Dragon Age III, but someday... We play as our main character, then s/he marries, gets to have (or adopt if your play character is homosexual) a child, then a few years later, we get to play as that child or something? Playing Dragon Quest V / Record of Agarest War games made me think about how fun it would be fun or hilarious to raise your own little family going fighting evil and having fun with your loved one. If BioWare writers haven't considered this path yet, it would be challenging and I bet they would love a good challenge no? :P Just some random thought I had.

But of course not everyone here would like that, it's still something that came into my mind and I thought it would be good to share. It would be interesting to have one or two generations on a span of half a century or more, seeing evolution in the world, the characters and all... But we would actually see them aging instead of always using the same designs. Something that made me sad about Dragon Age II. Anyways, what are your thoughs about this kind of concept?

Isn't Dragon Quest games quite long? I wouldn't be opposed to this idea, but I think it would be hard ot work in, when biowares later games all have shown to have approx 20~30 hours of play time.

Dragon Quests on DS are only long because of the grinding. Dragon Age has no grinding at all. It would be possible to do with BioWare's way of dealing with fights and experience points.

That's what happens in Rune Factory 2. I don't think it'd be that cool in DA, because they'd have to make two casts of companions, and it'd be really hard to make good character development for each character this way. Maybe DA4 could be about DA3's MC's child? I'm not sure if I like that idea, but certainly more than two generations in the same game.

Some characters could stick around due to their blood lineage or curses, if they live long or not, other would probably die of old age. Still, you would get to experience a bunch of generations of these characters, families... I find that concept fascinating.

The thing about "character development" is, if people like the game it will have "great character development and unique fully  fleshed characters" regardless of how much there was.  If people hate it it will have "no or bad character development and stereotypical characters" regardless of how much there was.

I like it game to game, but less in a single game, because the expense it would require. I'm definitely for various characters having children and then later seeing some of them at different times in their lives, potentially as companions or other important characters. I'd also be for a PC character to be able to have children and then have sort of a guiding hand questline where you can set the progeny on one path or another by choices you've made supporting them as a parent.

If we played a character who basically grew up in the same community as their parents, playing both generations could be done and would be interesting, but you'd have to have a smaller cast at different points in that game. That would work well, I think. It'd be different.

It would also be very cool to jump back in time and play a character perhaps throughout the course of that character's life, from youth through death, meeting their LI and seeing their children grow up, all playing off the choices we've made in the prior DA games. It would have to skip a lot of time, of course, and move place to place as the character and his/her family relocated and got involved in new adventures.

All in all, I'd like to see more reflection of the passage of time and more generational elements in the games. I definitely want to know that various characters exist outside of our direct view and do go on to leave familial legacies, more of them certainly.

That would be brilliant. Just thinking about it, I can't stop imagining so many possible scenarios in my mind. <3

I would love to see if Aveline and Donnic ever have a child together. Same thing for many love interests in the earlier games. Oghren's child too. Ah!! So many possible ideas. Families, fun, war, bonds, friendships, new possible love interests, generations... *drools*

Yeah, let's do one better and have a game that spans 50 years where nothing changes.

The Mass Effect games were shorter, but the Dragon Age series seemed to provide a much longer playing time.

Each playthrough of DA:O lasted about 100 hours and I did two incomplete playthroughs of DA2 that lasted around 300 hours total for me,

Spoilerish post:

Naughty, Dane was talking about Dragon QUEST series. A JRPG franchise made in Japan well known for its numerous sales down there along with Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest V is the one game I mentioned where you protagonist gets to choose a broom and have children with them, who get actually playable in the plot because of a curse that turns you into stone. You get to meet your children 10 to 12 years later. One of them trained to become a warrior while the daughter trained to be a mage.

It's been done before, in Record for Agarest War.

And that game is terrible.

This is exactly what I've wanted. Let the OGB have a kid with Hawke and Merrill's child. Or fit Feynriel in the lineage somewhere.

My condolenses.

In all seriousness, i'm glad you enjoy the game, but for me it was a really poor RPG.

What da hell did you do? :P

A standard playthrough of DA:O lasts me 28 hours with all DLC and all quests i can think of. :D
Do you listen to all the banter?

I also liked it and I'm a gay guy. Not everyone likes strategic JRPGs that require a lot of grinding and players guides to finish 100%. If it was about ecchi, I always skip the scenes I found tasteless. I'm talking about a BioWare game, a WRPG taking the generations aspect of some RPGs and making it their way in their own games. And people here should know by now that BioWare games don't have a lot of grinding to do.
