I will always play a Mage and I am not to particular what specializations come back (tho I really liked the "force made" options in DA2) BUT I hope there is some way that we don't have to waste 2-4 picks with crappy spells that are pretty worthless to get to ones that are. That is really annoying.

Exactly that! For me it's really important that a specialization also feel unique. So, if spirit healer is brought back, I hope that it will be reworked with creation school.
ps. sorry for any error, English is not my first language.

It sounds like specializations (at least for the Inquisitor) might work differently than the previous two games. We apparently only get one, they need to be sought out, and they impact the way your character is regarded by the rest of the world.

This sounds great, but I also hope there's some benefit for not taking one and remaining a generalist.

That sounds rather counter productive.
Spec is not about erasing other possibilities, but rather pushing ahead in one distinct style.
(you are stil able to invest in the basics anyway)

As I noted on a previous specialization thread we know that the two main themes of DA:I are war between the mages and the Templars and a rift in the Fade allowing many different spirits/demons into the world without the need to have a host. These conditions drive what abilities and specializations will be needed. I expect one will need characters with the tools needed to neutralize mages(dispel magic), kill Templars and return spirits/demons to the Fade(banish). Other issues might include a greater presence of blood magic(mind control) and an option to either temporarily or permanently merge with a spirit or demon.

I rather enjoyed my Spirit Warrior, but I can see why it could be difficult to bring back lore-wise. Arcane Warrior was fun too but it was so overpowered compared to other specializations that I could see why they didn't bring it back. I like the idea of only choosing one specialization but it radically alters how everyone reacts to you. If we only get 3 choices for each class but they all play very differently I'll be happy.

I want an offensive version of Spirit healer to be introduced properly. We have seen spirit healers use such abilities like Rhys. When a spirit is helping a mage it doesn't have to be only healing. Surely the spirit knows how to fight and can aid the mage in doing so.

I think the process of choosing a specialisation would be much more interesting if not choosing at all was a comparable option.

I always enjoyed arcane warriors. Specializations that really changed the dynamic of the class is always intriguing and as has been stated before, makes it a lot more fun.

I can agree with that.

I would agree with Lvl20DM as well, the ranger was nice but I found it weird that we had to summon the beast. I would expect your animal to have its own specialization tree. (even if it is mixed with your own tree unlike the mabari in DAO)

As for the blood mage specialization I would actually prefer if it wasn't a class by itself but more dependent of your true specialization (perhaps quest unlocking) - yes I know it seems we'll only have one specialization but I never considered the blood mage as a true specialization lore-wise speaking.

Although I would agree with Sylvius and would actually like it if we could have a "generalist" specialization, a jack-of-all-trades if you will.

i see it being easy for spirit warrior and arcane warrior to make major come-backs because the veil is weak, so spirits and demons are coming in willy-nilly.

i'd like to see literally all of the previous specializations come back, but maybe some of them can come back as basic trees, or worked into existing trees, like force magic could easily fit into the spirit tree, for example. and spirit healer seems like a staple so far, but it COULD be worked into the creation tree, and it damn well should be if we're only getting the one choice. i'm arcane warrior all the way if i have the choice, but i also had all 4 possible specializations in dragon age origins, arcane warrior, spirit healer, battle mage, and in witch hunt i picked up shapeshifter to turn into a bear cuz ****ing bears.

Some that I'd like to see again
  • definitely some kind of Spirit Healer
  • Blood Mage; but I'd like it to have its consequences or maybe reactions from your party members. I hated in DA2 that Merrill would get yelled at it by Anders or Fenris, and then literally 10 seconds later you're using it and no one said anything.
  • I'd like to see the Keeper spec back but maybe a little more in depth than before in Awakening
  • Force Mage
  • Duelist
  • Templar
  • Guardian

Mage: Blood Mage, Shape shifter (but better), Elementalist (unique elemental attacks and armor spells), Rivaini Seer (witchcraft, other awesome stuff), Cleric/spirit healer

Rogue: Bard (we are in orlais), Ranger, Arcane Archer, Tinkerer (unique traps, bombs, 1 handed crossbow + dagger), Assassin

Warrior: Templar, Champion, Spirit Warrior, Beserker, Spitfire (Crossbow Spec, unsure of what exactly could entail but a ranged warrior would be nice)

Arcane Warrior(a better version of it), Champion, Guardian, Battlemage, Force Mage, Spirit Healer, Keeper, Bard, Assassin, Ranger, Shapeshifter. I hope it's 3 instead of just two.

I'd like Arcane Warrior to be overhauled heavily so that it's not so boring. Force Mage would be rad also, with Gravitic Ring being probably one of the coolest spells in the series.

Bringing back and tweaking the arcane warrior might finally get me to jump on board the mage train. I only ever used mages as support and crowd control for both DA:O and 2 because I found actually playing that class to be a bit underwhelming. It can't be too hard to bring back the old spellweaver blade.

That said, rogue is my favored class, so I'm definitely impatient to see its improvements and that assassinate and duelist never die.

Well, since this is necro'd anyway.

Nothing from the previous games, exactly as it was.

Specializations need to make you something special, not just mild flavor.

I hope that i am able to play either a Mage that can melee, like a D&D Cleric mechanically, or a Warrior that can use some form of magic, a bit more heavy than Reaver or Templar.

Basically, i would be happy with an Arcane Warrior-like, but the AW itself. Something new and fresh, that allows Mages to be trained in big ass swords and heavy armor(which they can wear already), and go HULK MAGIC SMASH! The same way a D&D Cleric buffs up and goes melee, if they so wish.

Alternatively, allow cross class combos a la Mass Effect.

Anyway, specializations are going to be what makes or breaks the game for me.

Lets just say i don't really like being told how to play my character. I understand that i am going to be in a certain box anyway, but if said box is TOO narrow, it's not cool.

Please let this be true (and as awesome as I'm imagining it to be). I don't really mind what specs return, as long as they are given story weight - ie, given an in-game justification for learning them and having them referenced occassionally. Do that and Bioware can have my money right here and now.

That said, I do have preferences. Arcane Warrior felt very much a one-off (and was basically game-breaking), Ranger is hard to make sense of with animals just appearing out of nowhere, and Bloodmage has never yet been well implemented (with regards to people noticing or caring). On the other hand, I was a big fan of Force Mage, Assassin and Legionaire Scout.
