My main problem with the plot of Me1 was that it was circular.

Saren went to Eden Prime to find out about the conduit. THe conduit is a backdoor to the citadel. Why does Saren need a backdoor? Because he went to Eden Prime.....

Well the mako had one thing that nothing else could match - the feeling of a planetary rover. Yes I agree the controls with thrusters, and more importantly some of the terrain you had to traverse were not excellent.

But slowly driving across the barren surface of a planet/asteroid, with a gigantic red star (or whatever) on the horizon... it's the small things like that that really capture the imagination.

Fair point, can't disagree

I love it, personal opinion, entirely subjective, non-negotiable.

The one thing I liked the most and what really made me love the game was its lore integrity. Once you accepted the physics shoehorning with Eezo tearing down the standard mass/energy limitation, everything technologically made sense. Every technology in the ME universe was a linear, logical and practical progress from the point of Eezo. No more handwaving needed, it established a believable universe. Apart from biotics, which is of course space magic/the Force rehashed and not really consistent with an explanation of why it's there, or better, why it does exist in the first place. But again, within the boundaries of biotics existing, the established rules of what can be done and what can't was logical and consistent.

It was a universe that made sense and the devs were very eager to flesh it out with meticulous fluff almost everywhere with the Codex, missions and dialogue. It was a universe you could drown yourself in, immerse and enjoy it.

And the main storyline is imho one of the best I have ever experienced and both ME2 and ME3 progressive storylines are in my opinion vastly inferiour. They absolutely lack the certain grandeur of surprise ME1 has, where you were railroaded on a line of progression that made you curious and then *wham*, revelation, a new piece to the puzzle you wanted to solve.

All you get in ME2 and 3 is: Reapers are coming, we have to fight. There is no real progression. You have a condition you have the goal you want to achieve and that's it. ME1 had a question to be answered, why Saren, and then followed up with a fight for survival all the while leaving you wondering, why Reapers?

That integrity and superiour story are also why I still think it is the better overall game out of the three.

And if we'd ever get an enhanced remake with ME3 gameplay like improvements tailored to the strenghts of ME1 then it would be a close contender to one of the best games ever.

I personally put ME2 on top of the others (ME1 second and ME3 last). The only high point for me in ME3 was the combat system. Everything else it gets outdone by ME1 and ME2. I think ME2 got it right in both the Dialogue, Character development and combat as opposed to the other two. However, overall plot and the execution of said plot goes to ME1. And this is coming from a PS3 player who had to use Genesis to make the decisions going into ME2... That should tell you what kind of abomination ME3 was to the series.

Totally agree, some of the barren worlds you visit are truly beautiful to look at. I still catch myself driving around and slowly taking in the view on luna, amaranthine, agebinium, getting out on Presrop so I can look up at the great rift valley on Klendagon for the umpteenth time, it never gets old.

The Mako is a total b*stard to drive, but that's why I love it. It's very satisfying once you get the hang of it and I love the deployment cutscene you get with the Normandy dropping the thing like a bomb, entry level = badass:happy:

Another thing that I like about the first game, most probably think it's pretty minor but it makes a huge difference to me is the reduced amount of loading screens. I find it so much more immersive when you could dock the Normandy and just get out on a hub world or you could just move about the Normandy with no loading screens between decks. It's one of the things I miss the most when playing ME2 or ME3.

Great story and introduction to a new universe (thus it will always be nostalgic) awesome sci fi feeling, nice companions (depth, although being lacking now it was great at the time) and a non ****ty ending that actually made sense and made you feel heroic rather than wanting to throw the game out the window.

I only played it because back then I didn't know about save game editors, and the Genesis DLC thing didn't come out until months after I bought ME1/ME2. Just played it to get the story choices out of the way. I had Bought 1 and 2 at the same time, but I played ME2 First.

There wasn't much I liked about it, the Inventory system still haunts me,

And the voice acting/quality was terrible.
ME2/3 for example, Tali was my favorite character but in ME1 she was one one the most annoying in the game, Liara was pretty bad too

Not everyone does. Outside BSN, I've found most like it the least. For my money, it's very good but comes in third.

Basically the things which make ME1 great for me (and have mostly been dropped in ME2 & 3)

+ great overall story arc (IMO the best of the trilogy. ME3 story arc follows close. ME2 story arc didn't add a lot to the overall Reaper story and felt more like somekind of filler)
+ much more dialogue options in most conversations (not just 2 answers or auto-dialogue like in ME3)
+ real inventory and much more weapons & armor than in ME2 & 3 (also more armor customization for squadmates)
+ lots of real sidequests (not just scan a planet and bring artefact back to citadel)
+ planet exploration & vehicle missions (athough the Mako controlls could have been better and there could have been a greater variety of enemy bases)
+ interesting mini-games
+ much more character skils & talents (not only combat skills like in ME2 & ME3 but also tech skills [for hacking mini-games, etc,] or persuasion skills [for dialogues, etc.]

-Combat wasn't all that great. It's usually walking into a overused room design with 20 enemies waiting there to charge you and gangbang you screaming "I'LL DESTROY YOU! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE! HOLD THE LINE! GO GO GO!" It's even more fun when multiple npc's are screaming them at the same time.

Here I have to agree. Beside the bad Mako controlls and the recycled mercenary bases, this is the thing that is a problem in ME1. But mediocre combat doesn't make ME1 a bad game (or a game worse than ME2 & 3). As for me Mass Effcet was never about the combat but about the intense story, personal decisions, characters and all the options to develop your personal Shepard.

-Squadmates were useless. I only used Wrex and Liara for their biotics. They were killed very quickly, and whenever I command them to go to cover, they end up running elsewhere.

No. They are not useless. For example play as a soldier and take Ashley and Wrex on a mission. You won't be able to hack any consoles or whatever as you are lacking a tech expert. Also some of your squadmates do have a lot of firepower/offensive skills when used right. In ME1 it was really important to have balanced squad (soldier, biotic, tech).

I'm not sure how to quote only certain sections of a comment/reply, so I'll just go down the list.

-Personally, I liked the ME3 story over the ME1. There were alot of problems with it (your choices on the fate of an entire race only changing the "atmosphere" and the war assets, Earth, the Ending, the crappy Exdended Cut ending, I can go on.) But the story in ME3, to me, felt alot more intense, and that alot more was at risk. Up until talking to Sovereign, it felt like a generic "you a super cop, chase this bad guy down" kind of deal.

-Dialogue seemed to be pretty short in ME1. Had more wheels, but after multiple playthroughs I noticed Shepard would often say the same thing, regardless of you wheel pick.

-Having an inventory was nice, but from a role playing perspective, I don't think Shepard would be carrying over 100 guns (I think you could carry up to around 200 items or so.) And there were obviously ALOT more guns, but nothing unique from one vs the other. One weak Assault rifle would be no different than a stronger assault rifle, minus the damage and heat build up. ME3 the wep choices affect your weight (adding more RPG element) and there were no 2 exact clones of eachother (minus a pistol or two.)

-Sidequests were a nice add that ME3 failed at. http://www.vgcats.co...s/?strip_id=313 Is a great example.

- planet exploration is something I'm hoping in the next ME.

-Minigames? What was there besides the casino?

-Didn't really use the hacking & crap. Didn't really gain anything besides more gear to junk.

-Playing on Hardcore/Insanity, my squadies died pretty easy and quickly. I would just use them as a diversion most of the time and pick off some people w/ my sniper.

the end. just my opinion and all. definitely check that link out though, it made me lol when my friend showed me it.

Because ME1 was THE ORIGINAL!!! And because it actually WAS original..

The next two games in the series was a steady decline into your typical CoD game. (bar the amazing character development in ME2). Dumbed-down story, dumbed down writing. Multiplayer. Euek!
