First game I ever played that let me:
1. Customize a character.
2. Let me have the option of being a female
3. Control some of that characters actions and dialogue
4. Allowed me to really get to know my party members.
5. Knowing that this was part 1 of a story, that 2 and 3 wouldn't just be "sequels."
6. First game I played that really demanded multiple playthroughs. Yeah I play some games over and over and over but ME was the first where every playthrough was different.
7. The ending left me wanting more!

first of all:
I liked all 3 games (except the original ending of 3)
but!

what I liked about ME1 more than the other parts was
-more RPG
-the universe was a much darker, more threatening place. (the following parts felt more like I own the place)
-universe was bigger. maybe due to all the moons you could land on. even though the buildings were copy and paste, I liked them a lot. also when you landed on a moon orbiting a blue giant (as seen in the map) you saw that big blue giant from the surface it all felt very real, loved that.
-the story twists in 1 were the most mind blowing I think :)
-no origin required

For me, it was because it was more of an epic sci-fi game than ME2 or ME3. The 80's sci-fi feel, the uncharted planets, your status as an insignificant human in the midst of an all-new galactic community, etc. all of these added to the overall beauty of the game. There was definitely some magic about ME1 that was simply missing in the sequels. And that was immediately noticeable as soon as you wake up at the Cerberus facility in ME2.

Story and the first time seeing Sovereign fly off during Eden Prime - that scene made me go "Holy ****..." Overall, I prefer the second out of all three, but each game has it's highs and lows.

Well, ME1 was a ground-breaking game. It introduced many new things. And the story and the characters are incredible. It's kind of hard to compare the games in the trilogy, though. All of them are amazing, except for the ending of ME3 (it's actually terrible).

Nostalgia goggles.

ME1 was a great game, particularly when compared to the competition back in 2007. But is it by far the best game of the series, with flawless writing and gameplay? No, no, and no.

ME1 is way overrated on the BSN.

The story is what should make you keep coming back to it, not the combat. Hence CoD. If MP intertwined more with the campaign, then I could get on board. As it stands, it's nothing but a little side feature aimed to do nothing else but suck your money through those microtransactions. With the only upside being you can play as other races. But when you only have one game mode, even that gets old quickly.

Also, I never said the combat was comparable to CoD, it's a Gears rip-off obviously. The CoDifying of the game comes from other areas as already listed. CoD is successful because it's simple.

I've replayed ME3 single player multiple times. I loved the story. I hate the fact that you had these huge choices to make and they really didn't matter in the end, the ending was garbage, and there were alot of things I would have done differently. But overall, I really liked the story. Gather a massive army to fight off a much more superior force that has wiped out all advanced galactic life for however many millions of years. ME1, to me, felt too generic up until the sovereign chat. If I wanted to play the game only for combat, I'd jump on MP, but I've spent waaaaay more time on SP than MP.

The plot is overrated IMO. It wasn't bad by any means, and it is much better than ME2, but the "chase down the bad guy cuz I'm a super cop" feeling wasn't too special. ME3 gave you that feeling of "errmahgerd there's so much at stake.".

My question about the plot still remains though: Saren had his Spectre statis removed because his plans on finding the conduit were reveiled. Why didn't he just march on in with a huge army (would have been bigger without shepard wasting a ton during the missions) without the conduit when he was still a Spectre, and still trusted by the council? They came through the main mass relay anyway. Why didn't he just use his Spectre statis to get to the control area, and do what he had to do?

Not trying to poke holes in the plot, I'm sure there's an answer, but most of the forums I read on it didn't really have a good explanation. And not trying to start an off-topic argument.

Plot, characters and the atmosphere. And a sh*tton of nostalgia. Combat sucks though.

Calling nostalgia on a 4 year old game that you can play right now without looking for an old console or patching it to work on a modern OS is ridiculous.

I suppose there are exceptions, for instance Fallout 3 had a huge impact on me as a gamer. So I do have a lot of nostalgia for it.

In terms of the story, I think that ME1 is better than ME2-3.

i personally liked me1's story, inventory and equipment system the best of all 3 games. combat was not so great but was far from the worst combat system i have seen.

p.s.
ammo "powers" and thermal clips were completely horrible ideas.

Was curious about this (why everyone loves ME1 over the other ME's.) Whenever I start a new character in ME1, its the one which I blow off the most side missions and try to run through it as quickly as I can to get it over with so I can transfer Shepard over to the next game. I've completed the game before with finishing all the side missions and exploring all the planets I found. I don't hate the game, but I find the two sequels much more enetertaining in almost all aspects.

SNIP

Please don't start raging and sh*t over this. Just leave your reasons why you dis/agree.

Cheers

I couldn't agree more. People on here like to talk about how amazing ME1 was. It was pretty good for its time, but was quickly left in the dust by ME2 and ME3. If you try to be a completionist, most of your time spent in the game is driving across random retardedly rocky terrain to get to the same reused 2-3 buildings over and over and over and over and over and over.

People like to talk about the story and how great it is, which it is pretty good, but most people don't realize it's practically a CLONE of Star Control 2 & 3's stories put together.

for me me1 was awesome because it was simply the first. the story caught me from the end of eden prime and i wanted so bad to see what happened next, who's life i could screw with and who's i could save (a prospect diminished into war assets :( but oh well)

game mechanics it is super choppy and i for one hated the side missions on huge map to no where driving along mountains in the mako, but other than that it was great and to me it still has great replay value

I personaly enjoy all aspects of ME3 better than ME1 or 2. Not that I dont enjoy ME1 because I really do. I enjoy all the mass effect games but ME3 was my favorite game even with the ending.

it was an actual, open-world, rpg with a shooter element that also had a good plot line, descent character interactions, more moral choices, actual side-quests, and had extensive replay value (If your patient enough that is.) It is the only game that I have that I played through nearly seven times and still haven't got all the achievements (I be a achieve. horder). Bascially it makes you WORK for it, like rpg's should be. In the other two, all it really is, is point and shoot (Shooter with rpg element WTF!) Second one wasn't so bad, but the third... let's just not go into that.
... That's just my tabletop-me talking.

Spectacular game style. You can't name it, you have to feel it. Play it and you'll know it will best ME2 & 3.
