Why did everyone love ME1?

But generally, the gameplay in ME1 was clunky enough to take away some of my enjoyment. ME2 IMO struck a much better balance. Planet scanning aside.

I started the series with ME2 (picked it up for the PS3 on vacation on a whim) and got REALLY into it. It had a good story, the combat was good, the classes were fun, so then I decided I wanted to play the whole series from beginning to end, and I got ME1 and 2 for the Xbox.
And playing through Mass Effect 1 was painful for me. The Normandy was small and slow to get around, the constant background music on it got annoying FAST, getting behind cover was clunky at best, trying to shoot anything with a sniper rifle was like trying to aim while drunk, the inventory system was a mess, the Mako handled like a drunken rhino, and OMG the TERRIBLE hacking mini-game. I must have saved over 100 times in that game, and I saved every time I found one of those locked containers, just so I could restart if the game didn't register my button inputs correctly and failed me, and I didn't have enough Omni-Gel to just say "screw it" and soak it with goo so I could grab whatever was inside and move on.
But I slaved through ME1 and I'm dreading doing it again soon when I wanna go back and make some different decisions.

Because it was a good game, the the story was cliched but I thought well done enough that it wasn't an issue to detract from the game. The gameplay was good as were the char's such as Garrus, Wrex and co. I loved the diff't worlds and awesome views even if the habitats were copies because at least that could be explained logically.
My only gripe would be the horrid inventory management. What was not to enjoy about it? Oh and btw, this is not nostalgia since I'm playing ME presently and not remembering it with 'rose-tinted glasses'.

Add to the fact you could actually shape Shepard, you could be nice to one person, an **** to another, you be a knight in shining armour or an anti-hero, it was wonderful controlling every aspect of Shepard, although with regards to the dialogue wheel, I believe Mass Effect 2 perfected it as on some occasions all three options would lead to the same response from Shepard, you never got that in ME 2.
Mass Effect 1 & 2 are amazing experiences that I will always go back too, Mass Effect 3 is a generic, banal chore that I can't bring myself to play twice. (Finished the Mars mission in ME 3 and couldn't be arsed, why is my renegade Shepard almost identical to my paragon Shepard? Because EA thought it would be a good idea to rip control from the player in the last installment)
EDIT: Would like too add that I spent a ton on DLC for Mass Effect 2, Kasumi, Arrival, LotSB and various alt apperances packs, spent nada on ME 3 so EA missed out on that and I'm sure a lot of fans are in the same boat as me)

Nostalgia also plays a big part in it for most people.

I didn't love ME1 - I liked it, but compared to ME2 and 3, it really turns into nothing - after all, it is possible to finish the game after four missions or so - the rest is essentially fluff.
I agree, ME 1's main quest is great but it is very short. The rest of the game is copy and paste environments on empty planets. One can only go to the same warehouse, bunker, or mine so many times.

The rest of the game mostly involves talking to NPCs and roleplaying through branching sidequests, rather than simply fighting through a linear hallway with some nice scenery, and finding one or two datapads that contain some supplementary backstory. If you count ME2's squad-related missions as sidestories also, then it would be fair to say that the main quests in ME2 are mostly linear and relatively simple when compared to ME1's. They certainly didn't come anywhere near to the complexity or length of ME1's main quests.
ME3 has a few really well-done sidequests, but the N7 missions were basically horde matches played on multiplayer maps. The fetch quests were tedious minigames played out on the galaxy map.

- the story is more focused in the first one
- the story makes still more sense to me than the third one
- Love the film grain
- Love the Citadel version from the first game most
- The ending is still the best, most badass and satisfying ending for the whole series (although I do like EC for ME3)
- The music is more retro than in the later ones (ok... music is nostalgia, because qualitywise it is the weakest in the series)

As some have already said a lot of people dig Mass Effect mainly out of nostalgia. Since some people are still disappointed with the ending of ME3 they 'retreat' into the idea that the first game was so much better than ME2 and ME3.
what are you talking about? what you just wrote here is blindly ignoratn and its completely not true.
are you saying ive played ME1 over 40 times solely because of nostaglia?!?!?!?!
whats the opposite of nostalgia? because ive only played ME3 twice. when is my nostalgia going to start for ME3???
again, reread the reasons why people liked ME1, and not one of them say "becasue i was wearing my nostalgia glasses."

in the trilogy overall I like ME2 the best, most balanced piece in the trilogy.
As RPGer I prefer ME over ME2/ME3 but game play wise ME has a lot of issues, combat, inventory system and stuffs.
ME3 is the weakest among all, it has better graphic, feel more cinematic, much more fluid combat system but it became a third person shooter with selectable dialogues with pain in the ass journal system.
even ME3 disappointed me big time but I still love BioWare, can't wait for the Dragon Age: Inquisition!!

Actually I did read some the posts and while ME maybe the favorite out of the trilogy for some for others it is nostalgic. The fact that that doesn't apply to you doesn't make any less true.

Started with ME1. ME2 improved greatly combat-wise, also the bad inventory / loot system was gone.Darkinners wrote...

I still think ME1 had the better coherent storyline. ME2's primary storyline was quite short and you got distracted by too many not-directly-related missions (mostly the loyalty missions). I think the plot could have been better if most of the recruitment & loyalty missions were included in the primary plot and not separate plots. But maybe that's just me.
ME1 was cleary a great RPG. ME2 still had most RPG elements, especially character plots and such. ME3 lacked most RPG, removed most freedom (autodialogues) and forced the player to play the game in a certain way to be successful. In fact, ME3 feels more like a third person shooter than anything else, while ME1 and ME2 were RPGs.
In short words: I concur with what you said. ME3 was too much combat focused (you even weren't able to holster your guns!) - if I had the chance, I'd re-develop that part and create a much better plot

That's not a bad thing in itself of course. For me though that wasn't really what I wanted from the series and that is why I like the first game more.
