Of all the great monsters of myth and legend, Dragon Age only seeks to contain a handful.  Despite their minimalist approach to fabular beasts and beings, we seem compelled to play this game, for 'tis a world of wondry and magic we find.  Yet wouldn't it be more spectacular if we were to find some of the magical monsters of latterday tale and game herein?  To wit, the grue, the snark, the wumpus, the shmoo, and the hurkle.

Snarks are of Lewis Carroll's invention and are Public Domain as such.  They are hunted best with smiles and soap, are functional to much butchery and as such are a resource without exclusion from any household use.  Hunters had best take care that a snark is not also a boojum, lest said hunter "vanish softly and silently away".

Grues are not so much public domain (or might be, one had best check), but are useful as creatures of pitch-dark environs (which are almost as much a legend within Dragon Age games).  I might suggest that someday a character will say, "Yet nowhere is ever without light in Thedas."  And the reason for this could be the lurking Grue.  Grues tend to devour hapless wanderers who do not have access to light, for it is light that proves frightful to grues (as does "grue repellent").  The grue was invented by Infocom, yet it has been a dozen small aeons since Infocom has published aught (and so might be presumed missing at sea).  Them rascals.

Shmoos are actually pleasant creatures, well described on Wikipedia.  They are known to have thrown mud at people during at least one phase of their culture.  They are friendly and happy but known to be good for eating and for crafting articles out of.  As such, they are much like snarks in some regards, but are quite easily discerned as being different in appearance and other seemings from the boojum.

Hurkles are from the work of Theodore Sturgeon and probably require permission to use, so we'll probably see none, yet research can be fun and easily derived from his work "The Hurkle is a Happy Beast".

Thread title lead me to believe that we would discuss Schmooples and the shleets. I'm mostly disappointed.

The Shmoo is a little too jovial for my taste. If I wanted a big blob-like creature in a fantasy game, I might prefer something like Gloop and Gleep.

I'd rather not be eaten by a grue...

But I'd love to meet the Wendersnaven.
