So who are these focus testers? Do you guys hire a 3rd party agency of "pro" powergaming uber testers or do you just invite stoner kids in off the street or what? Maybe PM invite to some of the community? How do you guys normally get your bearing of what's really working together?

That isn't the subject of the thread, so I'll not answer your questions and promote further hijacking-- other than to say we have focus testers, both internal and external, that test any content which is in a state to actually play.

Now it's not hijacking.

NDA.

That said, Allen does quality assurance, IIRC, and might be in the sort of position you're asking about.

They are housed in a secret bunker in the coldest reaches of Canada, kept in separate cells away from human contact and sunlight. They are fed on the condition that they report any features OP would approve of as bugs.

the project team will determine their own requirements for focus testers: demographic, level of gaming ability, familiarity with certain game genres, etc. BioWare likely will try to assemble diverse groups to get as much feedback as they can. The opinions of these focus testers may or may not reflect those of individual community members.

I have had several friends who have been focus testers on various projects.

That's pretty cool. Do you know of any big changes that happened as a result of the feedback? Any times when you were like "holy crap we totally would have missed X if it wasn't for that testing!" type deals where you were happy to have it?

Yeah the focus testers thought the original Mass Effect 3 ending was too feel-good and satisfying, without sufficient room for speculation.  Also, not enough kids.

Judging from the state of the game, I'd say you're exactly right.
