You say Tomato, I say Tomato.

Or something....

She's not as well-spoken as YOU, of course, with your inside jokes and bestie devs. ;)

It's much the same in real life. After your spouse is dead you alone determine how long you should grieve. Some people move on, others do not. Neither condition really shows how much they loved their deceased spouse.

One thing that always seems like it's a bit awkward with returning companions is that it's difficult to talk sensibly about what actually happened in the previous games without not only violating head canon, but honest to goodness stuff that actually happened in game.

I mean, that time they saved the world, killed a few dragons, recovered the Urn of Sacred Ashes etc seems like it would come up.

People move on op, it does not mean that they don't care but they need friendship and love. Expecting someone to stay alone after years have past is not very healthy.

Plus whether or not the npc was even recruited, were they "killed", were they romanced or not etc. I'm definitely of the opinion that it'd just take up a lot of time and resources to essentially give the player a variation of an experience they could have had in an earlier game.

Though i almost want leliana to be re-romancable just for the possibility of the conversation where the pc asks if she's sure she's ready to move on from the warden, to which leliana replies that she is but you have to understand that the warden will always have a place in her heart and their beautiful eyelashes a place in the jar on her bedside table.

But does this mean that there wont be a Leliana or Alistair romance unless we are the Warden again? Image IPB

Although I'm still holding out (a fool's) hope to play as the Warden in future games, you can always just replay those games if you want to experience those romances again.

It wouldn't bother me at all if an old LI came back for a new character, but then I am self-absorbed enough to want to know all about what the LI thought of the old character, good, bad or indifferent.

Also, I think messing with people's head canon (even my own... but I don't really have one, since I play over and over and over again) would be awesome. I have popcorn, I'm ready for it.

Well, that was random but...

Alistair and Anders are dead in my playthrough.

I'd rather have all new romances for the Inquisitor then have the Warden's or Hawkes' romances as options.

I think that we writers would be reluctant to have a character be romanceable in more than one game for one simple fact: revisiting a romance plot would seem incredibly stale, unless the character had transformed into someone else completely. We've already done that story.

Agreed.

@Jade : I could like / love the same LI with the same hero years after ( Mass effect ), it makes sense, but otherwise in a franchise with a new hero for each new game but with a Li re-used, meh. Also, I could totally see some people asking for the same treatment with their favorite LI, while other folks would be mad with their headcanon killed lol.

I'm not really a big fan of *any* romanceable character returning, US or not. We've seen that character. We've heard their jokes. We've seen them in their small clothes. Time to move on.

I know, I know, people seem to have this perverse need to have Leliana in every Dragon Age game with a vowel in the title, but all these return appearances are is fanservice. And yes, I am including my own favorites in that. I adore Alistair, but I didn't need to see him in Awakening or DA2. He and my Warden are probably in Denerim doing things best not recorded in the chronicles. I adore Anders, but I don't need to see him in DA3. He's alive, well, and happily doing revolutionary things with my Hawke. I know this is true because this is the way I want it to be. Trotting either of them out for a one-liner kind of takes away from the story that was.

Nothing says "I love you" like "if I die first, I want you to be alone and miserable for the rest of your life."

To be serious; I'm not keen on the idea of previous LIs to return as romance options, but if they did, I wouldn't want them locked out.

Or we could write a brand new romance story for someone different, someone who doesn't have baggage.

I tried imagining the Dragon Age writers writing a romanceable character as "someone who doesn't have baggage" and laughed for a minute straight.  :innocent:

Perhaps he should have gone with 'Entirely new baggage.'

But I agree. I never want to see old romances romancable again in that capacity. Surely they have better things to do than search the world for the next big 'hero' to shag. I'd like to think they have more self respect than that.

Stick with new romances, or romancing old companions who were never ever romancable. Like Shayle, who's probably a hot sexy dwarf again.

Actually, a dwarven Shale romance would have me over the moon. Even if the first thought that crossed my mind involved her aversion to body fluids. It would definitely be a fun time!

^ All of this, and...could we have a semi-normal LI available?

Not like Jacob from ME2, as we saw what a dipwad he ended up being in ME3. More like Aveline. She was strong, capable, and emotionally healthy. A woman-shaped battering ram. I would have given up the bordering-on-creepy-Fenris-fangirl-obsession I had in a heartbeat for a chance with Aveline.

But if Cullen is on the LI list for DA3, I'll be your best friend, Mr. Gaider.

And then we'd also get into a situation where a player is angry because they're betraying their old PC, and violating headcanon-- which, quite frankly, would give us all of two seconds hesitation if it weren't for the other point. Why tweak the people who would be all weird about it, when it's not something that would particularly excite us in the first place?

I'm really happy to hear this.

Of course, my Hawkes would have probably been just as happy with Donnic. They were never to have normal, healthy relationships, I guess.

I dunno. My 'date' with Donnic was possibly the most awkward thing I've ever experienced in a video game. Of course that was one of my favorite moments.

Yes, but only because no one should be left with sloppy seconds from their warden character
