On October 19, 2012, Quest for Glory creators Lori and Corey Cole kickstarts a new adventure-RPG in Gloriana, i.e., the world of Quest for Glory.

Link: Hero U

It's not using the "Quest for Glory" name because Activision still holds the right to that name.  HOWEVER, everything else in the games (i.e., locations, characters, etc.) were not trademarked or copyrighted, so the Coles can basically use them in their new game.

I dont think RPG/old school players can back up more projects for some time. Not after Eternity, Old School and Star Citizen.

Our wallets are dry clean :/

Yeah it's understandable now there is finally multiple choices for high quality RPGs to pledge support, after a long drought of choices. We just hope that when you see the Hero-U Kickstarter it will be exciting enough that you'll share it with others, even if you can't support it yourself.

Please check out the video when it goes live, cause the music alone is pretty darn awesome.

Pretty much this.

People were draining their meager bank accounts and risking spousal abuse just to back PE. That mana pool is going to take a little cooldown time.

I could not find my old thread just now, so I started a new one. Can the moderator merge my new and old threads?

Would rather see a new King's Quest game(that's not a crappy fan game) but this has potential.

Telltale Games (Back to the Future, Walking Dead) is making the new King's Quest episodic games.  It will be released in 2013 and published by Activision.   Wikipedia has an entry for the upcoming King's Quest game with links to various sources and information, (e.g., interviews with the game producer and designer.)  It will be the ninth game in the series, i.e., King's Quest IX, and will not be a "remake" or "reboot".  It will be a brand new adventure in the Kingdom of Daventry.

IMO, the Walking Dead episodes prove that Telltale surpasses BioWare in terms of storytelling and characterization.  Telltale is really in a league of its own.  I generally hate pure adventure games.  The genre had too many problems,  (e.g., annoying pixel hunts, game-stopping deadend puzzles, only solution to  solve every puzzle, counterintuitive solutions, everyone thinks differently and solve problems differently so  why did I have to think exactly like the game designer to solve a puzzle?)   The genre failed to make any innovation and improvement.  I abandoned adventure genre and stopped buying adventure games in the mid-to-late 1990s.  However, Telltale has brought something new to a dead genre.

Glad to hear though frankly I'm not too keen on the whole episodic content. Never been a fan of that.

Episodes are better than DLCs.

I prefer episodes that maintain consistent quality standards over DLC that are too often of substandard quality.  Too often DLC are riding on the main game's better review scores to money grab.

Just look at BioWare's DLC.  The main games (like Mass Effect 2 and 3) would score 90+ at Metacritic.  However, the DLC fluctuate in their qualities.  BioWare would release a few good DLCs and a lot of low-quality ones, but then they tie all the DLC into the stories to make you feel like you should get them to get the "whole experience".  Honestly I'm very put off by that kind of business practice.

On the other hand, Telltale's episodes are very consistent in their qualitiies

I was skeptical about this project at first. They seemed to grab the worst RPG feature - underground dungeons - and the worst implementation of pre-defined adventure protagonist - straight white male.

However more I have heard about, more curious I became. The pick of pre-defined hero was intentional because the series plans to involve "hero" of each installment in next one as a side character and continuation should contain various types of lead. And dungeons won't be mandatory or more precisely, it won't be a crawl-fest if I don't want to.

And frankly, I miss their light-hearted humor and appreciation of "do good" attitude in modern games. Don't get me wrong; I'm glad more serious games are developed. But where are also good-natured games which don't see everything in grey? Gaming world needs a balance, so I pitched in.
I hope the project will get funded ($120k missing :pinched:). For the clear vision behind it and for sweet geekiness of its creators whose communication with backers is exemplary. ^_^

I'm not going to kickstart a game with a fixed protaganist, even if it is a rogue. (Personal rule) but there's a pretty good chance I'll at least pick it up if it comes out. They picked a modest enough kickstart goal though so I wish them luck.

How has this not been on my radar? The Quest for Glory games were some of the best designed Sierra games ever made.

Can't say I'm pumped about being stuck as a rogue, though. Magic User/Wizard was always my favorite class, although the Quest for Glory games REALLY did their Thieves Guild sections right - making our character ACTUALLY feel like a thief was pretty awesome.

As for the "white male character" complaint, I can't say that's ever bothered me (although I am, fairly enough, a white male)... at least he's a ginger? That's something you don't see all that often.

Fast Jimmy: I know. I have never played as a rogue/thief too. But in the end, memories of their games and how they felt won. I guess it's about time I role-played a rogue and "picked" male option in RPG for once ;). A ginger... Hmm, you're right I don't remember I ever played one.

Thieves guild in GfQ4 made me actually regret I didn't choose a thief.

I watched the Kickstarter video with an open mind, but the overall impression I have is that they were not far enough along in the development process when they made this video.

The concept art they included in the video doesn't look very interesting, and I have no idea what they are talking about when they say "combat is treated like a puzzle."

Perhaps if they had a gameplay video showcasing what they are trying to do, or if I was blown away by an amazing story premise and concept art, but as it stands the project just doesn't seem interesting enough for me to pledge.

It was a little different situation for Project Eternity, as Obsidian already has such an amazing track record, but I've never heard of these guys or any of the games they worked on previously.

I think they meant HoMaM kind of battle.

I have had same attitude towards a couple of other projects I didn't back. These projects simply fall into "wait and see" category; it's natural that each appeals to different target group.

I don't want to be "that" guy, but the Quest for Glory series is truly amazing. I'm fairly certain you can get the entire series on GOG for under $10. I played the entire series over again last summer and, aside from the second game (you can find a pretty good fan remake here), it really stands the test of time. Its equal parts the "point and click" game like Kings Quest, but with the combat, skill progression and dialogue options of a good RPG.

How your hero progresses through the games really makes you feel like you should be as powerful and influential as you are by the end of the fifth game. The only drawback someone may find is the skill grinding that happens... but in reality, its almost a part of the game to spend your downtime training and getting your stats and skills as high as they can be through various activities.

The fifth game was a departure from their more established format, but it was still a good ending to the entire series. And the faults people may find with it are more indicative of it being the death rattle of Sierra, rather than bad design, per se. The amount of humor, awesome story and unforgettable moments in these series makes me extremely excited that the Coles are making a game again.

Oh, you've got to be kidding me! Sure, that they didn't start with perfect pitch material probably cost them (and us) the stretch goals, but first KS reduces functionality of their site, making it a closer finish then it needs to be, then they nearly killed the project because of the plotting and scheming of that severely hypocritical (and probably male) she-dog with a capital B Granida, then Amazon Payments went off for hours right as it was starting to build last week momentum (which thankfully doesn't seem to have hurt too much) and now, a day and a quarter before it ends -- and it needs every single hour of that time -- KS is unreachable!? And of course it's even worse for those projects which ended around the time either of the latter two issues hit. If they don't extend the affected projects by a day even now, they can all kiss my unshaved behind.

Edit: I found out soon after that it was only Firefox acting up regarding www.kickstarter.com -- anyway, such a nailbiter, this project! Argh!

I bought the Quest for Glory series on GOG recently. Planning on giving it a try once I'm through with Fallout. Sounds like my kind of games!

As for Hero-U: I hope they'll make it! Back when Shadowrun Online was on Kickstarter they were pretty far off their goal shortly before it was over, and made it with a ridiculous rush within the last two days. Since then I stopped making guesses about a projects success if it doesn't look absolutely hopeless.

Just thought I would post in this thread again, since there is some actual news on the game.

This game looks great to me - here's a video of the demo that's out now:

Contrary to the video's statement, the game is slated to release here in a few months - October 15, 2015. Which is a little hilarious, given that the game was originally slated with a October 2012 release date... but good things come to those who wait. The game isn't a retread of the old games, but rather a new invention altogether, but still within the same game world and with the same heart and soul.

Anyway, I'm pretty pumped - if this is the last game the Coles do or if it kicks off a whole series of other games in the Hero-U world, I'd be happy either way.
