You seem to be operating under the assumption that the necessity of avoiding villages will cause desperation with the same absolute causality that ingesting a kilogram of cyanide is fatal. Most mages aren't going to care. And if they do pass through a village, if they wear civilian clothing, no one will even know they're mages. They don't wear signs around their necks.

And, since the Chantry does possess political and social influence, the templars seizing whatever wealth they possess by force is *not* going to endear them to the populace. If anything, they may find themselves hunted with greater tenacity than the mages. Especially since there's a sense of betrayed trust. People get upset about that. Also, templars are much more easily spotted. Mages can put on any old rag they pick up off the rag pile and pass as a beggar without losing access to their abilities and whatever protection that provides, but armor is expensive. A templar who wants to avoid notice may need to wear something that doesn't scream "I murdered three Reverend Mothers last week!" Sure, he can pick up the same rags and put them on, but then he forfeits his protection. Templars are in for a rough time, I'm afraid.

I'm operating under the assumption that people need food/water/shelter to survive. Mages are a subcategory of people, and I am given to understand that they have these mundane needs as well. Unless they're some sort've wilderness survival expert, they'll need their supplies from some form of civilization. Theft from outlying farms and such is the most likely course of action for the more moral mages, but not all of them will have those kinds of scruples. Since they're being actively hunted by a militant organization, they also have substantial incentive to avoid having any witnesses. There will be mages who take the easy route of simply killing those who stand in there way and taking what they want. There will also be mages who want revenge for the friends who were killed by templars, and people seeking revenge often take it out on the wrong people.

The Chantry will undoubtedly put at least some effort into sabotaging the templars. I seriously doubt that the templars would end up hunted though. A lone mage is easy prey, a squad of armed and armored templars, not so much. There's a reason that armor is expensive. Four templars could probably put a small village to the sword as easily as a mage could torch it, only difference being that the templars wouldn't be killed so easily by an arrow or a knife. Without the templars the Chantry only has political methods with which to attack the templars, so short of a nation using its military to go to war against the Templars, the only forces that might attempt to "hunt" templars are devout peasants, and their odds are much poorer against templars than mages.

Eh? Blood mages may want sacrifices though.

Well, there are templars around.

They'd certainly want demon allies to help them fight against the templars. These are excellent suggestions and I hope they make it into the game anyways.

Demons are unreliable, and summoning more than you can control is foolish. Just mind control a few templars into fighting for the mages.

Contrast is better, discovering ruins doesn't really matter if you didn't see what stood before. I'd like to see the devastation which plagues the nation only occur as time goes on, perhaps getting better or worst based off your prior decisions.

"Welcome to the Village of Hopes and Dreams, how would you like your free meal and bed?"
"Amazing!"
"We've got some of that!"
*you lead Templar into a war against mages, you let them escape because you feel wholesale slaughter is unjustified*
*you go back to the village, it's now burned down and devastated with corpses littering the streets*
"...y-you! You came back to the Village of Hopes and Dreams! You must help us, a small group of mages appeared! They began making demands, wanting to sacrifice our men and women to bring demons into the world to get revenge on the Templar which killed their friends!"
"****."

People are totally missing the point of this post. Whether you think mages would never do evil or not is irrelevant.

The idea is that there would be consequences and changes to the world based on your actions. Letting a group of mages, or group of ANYTHING potentially dangerous, go could perhaps lead to those you let go one day terrorizing or even destroying a town. Seeing a city in ruins is one thing. Seeing the city both before and after it's ruined is another. Being responsible for the city being in ruins because of the choices you made in-game is even better.

At the cost of losing every single one of his allies.
