I really liked the option in DA:O of the "it's not you it's me" responses to breaking a romance with someone.  In DA2 seemed like the break up conversations were really harsh and cruel.  I'd like a "let them down easy" option for DA3.

As with anything, it depends on how it's implemented. I'd be perfectly okay with having a drama queen "LI" who thinks that you evincing the SLIGHTEST bit of interest or common ground with them means ZOMG LOVE and you have to basically beat them off with a stick and then they turn evil and come up with this outrageous scheme to FORCE you to love them that goes HORRIBLY WRONG, and all the while your companions are laughing at you.

This could be a great companion quest, too--help someone deal with their Crazy Stalker Chick.

here here! +20. I'm still alittle sore on the whole "I don't want you thinking that way" thing i've never wanted to slap my pc more than in that moment

(confrontational break ups are fine so long as it's just one option i would like to chose how it's done)

Actual break ups, I'm okay with being harsh. "Break" is kind of a key word there.

But when it's still just in the flirting stages, you should be able to go the "I'm so glad I have a good friend like you" route with no loss (or gain) of approval/friendship/rivalry/whatever.

Break ups are kind of different. If there's an actual relationship to break up then its fine for characters to be more emotional.
But for flirts/early stages/ first come on or whatever i'd prefer a gentle let down and calm response in general though i get that might not be the in character reaction for all characters.

Maybe I should volunteer to do the voiceover.

The option would be nice. I've had to reload a couple of times because turning down certain hopeful LIs makes Hawke look at them as if they were something really nasty caught on her nice new boots.

I agree, especially when you're still in the getting to know each other stages. Later, once you're actually a couple, I can see the dialog being a little more painful, but you should definitely have the option to friend zone someone right out of the gate.

Agreed. If a character starts insinuating they would like to be part of a romantic relationship with the PC, I'd like to GENTLY turn them down, not be all

NPC- "Hey, I think you're cute."

PC- "Go die."

NPC- "Wa..what?"

PC- "I'm sorry, give me a moment. I'm just imagining what you'd sound like free-falling from a very high cliff."

NPC- "I take it I should go away."

PC- "That'd be nice."

Being able to let them down easy would be great, but now I totally want that option.

I usually just go along with the flirting these days. It doesn't count until Act 2, so w/e.

If I ever voice act in a future Bioware title and they let me play the role of a Prince, I demand I voice that line.

But yeah, EASE UP THE TURN DOWNS, DAAAAMN.

I rather liked confrontational break ups.

Break ups are welcome to as much drama as they want.

Letting someone down while you're still in the light flirting or "let's be friends" stage though, that shouldn't be as harsh as it was in Dragon Age 2. You shouldn't, while in a friendship with a companion, have to choose a dialogue option that effectively says "Go kill yourself", just to avoid getting into a romantic relationship with them.

Sure, some companions will be completely oblivious and won't realize that "you're a good friend to me" actually means "back off or i'll kill you". You're allowed to have the odd nitwit that can't quite grasp the subtle approach and keeps trying to get into your pants, maybe that one companion needs a slightly sterner talking to.

That's fine, if there's a companion that doesn't get the more subtle dialogue option then I would expect them to get confused, and I would expect my character to make it clearer for them.

However, if the character is obviously savvy (and not a socially awkward idiot) then they should get the message that "you're a good friend" means "stop trying to touch me there".

You shouldn't need to be overly stern when you're simply defining the boundaries of your relationship with a certain companion, and the companion in question shouldn't be kicking up a stink simply because you're defining exactly what your relationship with them is.

LOL, "Stop trying to touch me there" should totally be incorporated into a soft let down.

NPC- "Ever since I've met you, you've touched my heart with your kindness. Its sweet. I'd like to...return the favor." *wink wink, nudge nudge*

PC- "Actually, it'd be wonderful if you'd stop trying to touch me there." *counter wink wink, nudge nudge*

NPC- "YOU HEARTLESS SHREW!" *runs off*

PC- "...wat."

*Bioware, we don't just mean soft let downs, we mean soft REACTIONS TO LET DOWNS*
