But my characters are usually the most interesting man (or woman) in the world.

If they say "it's not you, it's me", they're lying.

I've kinda hated the whole Heart/Broken Heart dialogs, but being nice triggers some romances too. I played through just picking the olive branch/angel wings in DA2, and I somehow romanced Anders... It was my third conversation with him, too, and I didn't exactly want to say, 'Yes, keep flirting' or 'No! Bad touch!' This is an exaggeration, obviously, but it felt like this:
NPC- "I've seen my parents' hearts ripped out right in front of me by those blighted monsters..."
PC- "Oh, you poor man, I'm so sorry... If there's anything I could do to help..."
NPC- "Why don't we take off these robes and you can help me forget?"
PC- "I'm... sorry? What did you just say?"
Of course, it wasn't as bad as that, but...

"Stop trying to touch me there" should totally be incorporated into a soft let down.

NPC: I appreciate what you did... You trusted me enough to let me make the decision it was... Kind of you.
PC: You're a good person. I knew you'd make the right choice in the end.
NPC: I'm glad you have such confidence in me.
PC: Well, we're friends aren't we? Friends trust each other.
NPC: Yes, I'm proud to call you friend... You're the most amazing person i've ever met.
PC: ....Erm, quite. Shouldn't we get go-
NPC: You're so strong, and proud. Uh.. but not in a stuck up way or anything. And so beautiful..
PC: ....Look, i'm not sure what you're getti-.....
NPC: ....
PC: .....Please stop trying to touch me there.

....It could work.

I also support OP. I mean, it was kinda funny to watch (and then reload, lol), but, yeah, it came off really mean. And that's totally cool as an option, but I agree that there wasn't a nice let-down option. Balance is nice.

What? Come on, that'd be hilarious.
In all honesty though, it would proably depend on the character. I imagine some would overreact at a simple "Uh, no. We're just friends." While another might shrug off "I wouldn't touch you with a ten foot pole." like it was nothing.

I'm hella good at writing, that's the problem. lol

/what the hell kind of person says they're good at writing and uses "hella" in the same sentence

/who the hell makes a side statement that's longer than the original statement and then follows it up with an even longer side statement

Soft Let Downs. Make it happen.

I hope we get back the "Hey, are you sleepiing with us both!" Confrontation, cause those were fun, unless it was Leliana, and then it was crazy, moreover cause the convo should have gone...

Leliana: Are YOU slepping with Morrigan and I?!
PC: Uhhh, no... Just Morrigan.
Leliana: You can't have us both!
PC: Ummm... Just Morrigan still"
Leliana: You said you loved me!
PC Actually my exact words were, "I think we should be friends".
Leliana: Fine go to Morrigan.
PC: K Thanks, I guess.

Morrigan: 'Tis weakness, do not want.
PC: Thats cool Zev has been over there looking all fine anywho, we still cool?
Morrigan: Sure thing drop by later so I can tease you about how mushy-sweet you both are.
PC: Will do.

Leliana: Your cheating on me with Zevran?!!!!
PC: Oh come on!

Instead the Warden had to be all "Leliana, I so sorry I cheat on our imaginaray relationship!

Yah its funny now, at the time though.:pinched: Sad thing is by the end of this specific play though All romancable characters were in a relationship with the Warden, Although Ali only ever called me "my love", except for Zev who still only ever gave friend responses.

Errr, on second though perhaps we should have the romance options be as uncomplicated and straight forward as possible. :P

Better idea...

Atleast a option of when companion confesses their love for you, a dialogue interrupt with the camera on the companion turning around to face you and there is just a dust shaped like your character which dissipates then behind it you see a man or woman shaped hole in the door because you ran away.

It was worse for me.

Leliana: So. I hear you've been letting Zevran take a ride on your baloney pony.
PC: Yup.
Leliana: Score. He's way fine, keep up the good work.

***LATER, BACK AT PARTY CAMP***

Leliana: WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON WITH YOU AND ZEVRAN?
PC: Uhhh... Did we not go over this? I thought it was established that we're banging like crazy.
Leliana: I thought you and I had something special! What about the time we bonded over shoes?
PC: Okay, I don't know how to make it any clearer for you. I. am. gay.

Ooooh that is better, see I didn't get that cause she was too busy being enraged about my engagment to Anora, cause apparently she will give me up for the good of Feralden. This was after I broke up with her for m=Morrigan and then again for Zevran, and then again over no one but she was all "the stars are so pretty" and I was all, "yah, I know you crazy girl, this is a road I will not travel.")

Annd then comes anders.. saying....

Anders: are you sure you  dont want  to break up with that person and or oh i think i can change your mind  to go out with me ...{ i hated  it was forcing you after you made a  choice and kept trying to make you change your mind.and you said  no three times to him on staying with the current li thru out the game.}

Mmm, depends on the character. Each character is different. If it makes sense for the character depending on your dialogue choices, sure. But some people just don't take rejection well.

For example, it really should come as no surprise that if you date Anders and try to break up with him, he has a bit of a freakout, though I did think his critical comments of other romances were excessive.

True, Anders was a self-absorbed whiny child in an abomination's body, so it really shouldn't come as a surprise that he reacts badly to any situation where it is pointed out that the world, and Hawke, doesn't revolve around him.

Damn right. my Hawke Romanced Isabella, and Anders kept getting all..pissy about it wanting to "change my mind". after repeatadly telling him I was pretty much happy with Isabella. from an RP prespective it was kind of fun that Hawke had a stalker  I support a "Let them down easy" option for those where subtity works or where you have accidentally flirted or whatever (like with Anders again where Hawke was just being nice and not a total douce and my theee options were ALL flirty LI ones) I also support a brutal "Go die in a ditch while wild beavers urinate on your face" option for those like Anders that just will not take no for an answer.

I support this, because with such a soft break up option it is still possible to save the romance. And it is also what I would do in real life. I would never say Go fu... off or something like that to somebody.

Btw: I like Leliana's response to the line of the OP in Origins, when she almost freaks out and then tries to change your mind.

LOL.  I'd be down with this.  The brutal shutdown option at very least would prevent ninjamance.  Though DA has been much better about making romance dialogue options very distinct.  ME2 had me reloading each of Jacob Taylor's conversations three times to try and not sound like I was on probation for sexual harrassment.

...now I want that line about beavers in DA3.  I also want it retroactively for the ME series <_<

I personally find it significantly more important that I can let someone down easy than them taking it well. Maybe it's in their personality to not take it well. I'm okay with that, but I'd very much prefer not feeling like I deserve it.

Actual break ups, I'm okay with being harsh. "Break" is kind of a key word there.

But when it's still just in the flirting stages, you should be able to go the "I'm so glad I have a good friend like you" route with no loss (or gain) of approval/friendship/rivalry/whatever.

Agree. We should be able to dramatically end a relationship once it's gotten serious if we wish ("You know what? You're an ass, and I'm sorry I ever slept with you. Mother was right all along! *sobs*).

But if they're just testing the water, there's usually not much of a need to be rude to a companion who's interested.
