on the memorial wall, it lists Shepard as Cmdr.

however, i always thought when a military officer is killed in the line of duty, they are honorarily promoted two ranks (in some of earth's military anyways).

So, the memorial wall should list Shepard as Rear Admiral

Well my Shepard didn't die. I do believe he was still listed as one "Cmdr Shepard".

Maybe it was "Lt Cmdr". I don't know.

And where that kind of information in a codex or in game?

The U.S. doesn't and I don't think Canada does either.

That would make him captain/major, as s/he was a lieutenant commander, and was appearantly never promoted over the course of the trilogy.

Yeah he should be promoted....if this were the Fullmetal Alchemist universe. And I don't think biotics are quite the kind of magic they use.

I have heard that during WWII Japanese soldiers who died in combat were automatically promoted to the next highest rank, whether or not that is actually true. Never heard of this though.

Yeah. What I find a little wierd, however, is if you have Kaidan live he technically out ranks Shepard, but is obviously following Shep's lead.

Oops. I quoted the wrong person. LOL. I meant to quote this...

not just the Japanese, but the Italians as well, and the Germans were given a two rank promotion (as long as they were above a certain rank to begin with)

That's because Shepard has command of the ship, and as such automatically outranks Kaiden on the ship, and was given charge of the mission by Hackett and as such outranks Kaiden on the mission. Anderson should have given Shepard a field promotion to Captain.

When leaving Earth Anderson Does refer to Shepard as Commander(then throws him his dog tags)
Shepard - "I don't take orders from you anymore, remember"
Anderson - "Consider yourself re-instated...Commander" ~chucks dog tags~

What if the Fleet Admiral dies? Does he become Emperor of the Galaxy?

I thought it was just a mistake, and Bioware was thinking that Commander was higher than Major.

Really? and here I thought it was because Kaidan was a bend-over-and-spank-me kind of guy and would never stand  up to Shep, lay down, yes, stand up?? nah.....:innocent:
