Mordin Curing the Genophage
Betraying Mordin
I realized earlier today when all is said and done it feels like Mordin got a better ending than Shepard did. The Genopaghe Curing (or not curing) scenes is easily the most powerful scene in the entire game (and perhaps even the entire series). My first playthrough was a paragon one that went similar to the curing video above (except that I lost Eve). It is a powerful scene that leaves you with a mix of sadness and pride. My renegade playthrough put me through the exact scenario from the betrayal video above. In the entire series the most difficult thing I ever had to do was pull the trigger when Mordin turns and walks away from you. I very nearly didn't do it inspite of my determination to see the other side of the plot. Betrayed or not, Mordin's ending was better than Shepards in many ways.
The first is confidence in the value of his sacrifice. He knows clearly what he has to do, why he has to do it, and what it will achive. Even when you pull a gun on him he faces you unafraid and says "No. Your wrong. This is the way it has to be." Shepard's is a lot less clear. He has to die to kill the reapers but there are a bunch of options and it isn't entirely clear what the result will be after the fact (and all we have to trust is the ghost kid that we've never met before and apperantly controls all the Reapers).
The second is clarity in the reason for his sacrifice. His own people sabatoged the shroud and the cure won't work unless it is fixed. The sabatoge is going to cause an explosion but someone has to do it and he chooses that someone to be him. For Shepard, why didn't the crucible fire in the first place? We've been told all the time that it will and it didn't. And the method of activation requiring us to be disitegrated or caught in an explosion is kind of weird.
And finally, it comes at the climax of a story arc. This isn't really as clear cut but it is the way I see it. The genophage cure plot all leads up to this moment and it is at the climax of the story arc as the cure disperses that Mordin dies at the top of the shroud. For Shepard, the Catalyst conversation felt like it came after the climax of the story. My reasons for this are explained in massive detail here. The basic summary is that our primary conflict over the course of the game is with Cerberus which causes killing the Illusive Man to feel like the climax of the story. There's even a little false ending in there to throw you off before the big sacrifice scene.
