Hi!

I installed a rather old hard copy. on an XP machine. The config utility crashes. The patch links at the location below don't download.

masseffect.bioware.com/me1/pc/updates/index.html

How can I determine whetether the patches are included in my installation? And if I need the patches where can I get them?

Cheers!

You can see what version of the game you.

Launch the game.
Click "Configure"
Head to "Game" section.
Look at the MassEffect.exe file version.

And how would I do that if the config utility won't run? You do realize that "config" runs the utility, right?

This is only the place to discuss gamer-found fixes. Official Tech Support is at EA Help. Scroll down to find the Help Column, choose the Bioware Game Support Link, and from there get in the queue for the Chatline. Don't waste time with the eMail option. Answers are extremely slow that way.

Yeah. I tried the email option and got into an endless back in forth with a completely useless person. This person was incapable of being able to understand that the problem was with the Bioware website not providing the patches, and kept blaming my computer for some reason. I found the patches elsewhere, installed them, and problem was solved. Customer "support" was the worst and most wasteful I have ever received for a game. It's no wonder the Biodocs are leaving.

The quality of help via the Chatline also varies between individuals manning the lines there.  Some want to help, many prefer to follow the scripts robotically.
