Do you have to complete every mission and unlock/decrypt everything to hit level 50 on one playthrough?

The very first time you play the game, it probably won't make a difference if you did. IIRC, I had to start two NG+ to get to levels 50 and 60 respectively. Once you play the game a few times, and get more of the achievements (quite a few of which affect XP gain), you'll get to between levels 54 and 56 in a single, completionist, playthrough

I hit the level 50 cap late on the first playthrough, on Ilos I think. Did absolutely all side missions and opened nearly everything apart from a handful of containers I overlooked and didn't find till later playthroughs and two on Virmire that I couldn't open because Shep was a soldier. Killed the majority of enemies on foot but all the Thresher Maws were either killed in the Mako or avoided altogether and all but one of the Geth Colossuses were killed in the Mako. So for certainly don't need to be 100% completionist to hit 50 but you do need to be relatively completionist.

My first play through I reached level 49 like 1000 XP from level 50.

I feel your pain. Replayed the same character in my second to get a level 60 to import into ME2 and fell short by 80 thousand. Didn't understand about the level scaling so I skipped a lot of mineral/artifact collection and basically killed everything from inside the Mako until I realised too late that every XP really counts to get from 50-60 in one run.KENNY4753 wrote...

Yeah, I started a second playthrough recently to get to level 60 for the achievement and have done almost every side mission (missind a couple minerals and one isignia), am level 58 and started Virmire. I should make it to 60 but I haven't been in the mood to play recently.PsiFive wrote...

If you're playing Virmire fairly late in the game you could still miss 60 from level 58. If you're only just at the low end of level 58 you'll need 320,000 XP, and even if you're only a handful of points off level 59 you'll need nearly 200,000. The level scaling is really tough: the last ten levels need nearly double the XP required for the first fifty levels. Not sure how much XP there is in various locations and I may be misreading how much game you've got left to go, but if all you have left is the remainder of Virmire, the final Citadel visit and associated side quests, plus Ilos and the Citadel battle stuff then you might struggle. If only you got even more XP for melee I'd suggest putting the guns away now and battering everything to death. Good luck.KENNY4753 wrote...

Well I've just finished an ME1 playthrough at level 50 and I never got out of the mako to kill things, didn't bother with the minerals/data discs/asari writings/insignias or any side missions which I was not specifically instructed before hand to go and do. I also missed out Pinnacle Station entirely (though I did do BDtS), as well as one or two side missions.

Damn. If it comes down to it and I barely miss out of level 60 I'll just restart to get to level 60 for the achievement.PsiFive wrote...

That's what I'm planning to do. Just a couple of those last few achievements to get now (the Pinnacle Station ones look daunting).

You can get 57 in a single play-through without DLC. That is doing basically every single thing in the game though. Taking the long way through Noveria, killing every enemy on foot, all the side missions, getting all the loot...
Hitting 50 is a lot easier to do, you just need to do most sidequests.

Level 57 with a 100% or near 100% completionist run sounds about right. That'd put the total amount of XP it's possible to get in the entire game somewhere north of 465,000, which in turn supports being able to do level 60 in two highly completionist playthroughs. KENNY4753 and Ferretinabun, if you find yourselves just short on XP at the end of the game and really can't face another playthrough then there's always *whispers* enabling the console, clicking resume to go back to the Citadelt and then giving yourself a few thousand extra XP right before fight the Saren Husk.

I hit level 58 today on my new character Insanity playthrough. Granted, I still get the XP bonuses for completing the game twice, etc. This included both Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station.

Do you still get more exp for killing things groundside outside the mako? I remember kill geth prime in tank was ~100 jump out when its 5% health shoot it on foot get 1500? (numbers are not right but added to make the point)

Yes, you get more XP for fighting outside the Mako. I think it's actually a penalty for being in the Make rather than a bonus for being on foot but it boils down to about 40% or something for getting out and finishing off enemies on foot.
