What would people like the protagonist of DA3 to start as? Now what I'm talking about is the characters overall status. For example. Dragon Age origins the mage. You've only recently passed your harrowing, your a new member to the grey wardens which has been reduced to two members in the region, you have no wealth and very little actual combat experience. You're pretty much a nobody. The only way you could be more of a nobody is if you were the farmers son who spent his winters practicing sword play and hunting as there is no crop planting in winter.

Then another example. Shepard starts the game as a specter candidate, an elite N7 marine, in my case a war hero that pretty much soloed a small army, I assume through stealth attacks and hit and run, and pretty much someone that's already proven themselves to be a capable combatant. So Shepard starts off with a decent level of status and storyline wise is rather capable.

I'd personally like a bit of status in the beginning that's a bit between these two cases. Something like the problem solver or one of the better problem solvers of a well to do town. Got a drake stealing your live stock and threatening your life? Come to her. Got some bandits making the road dangerous to travel? Let her take a trip with you and that problem will be solved. Dead kin rising from the ground trying to eat your flesh? Well she can help with that to. A good solid reputation locally with some weight in the neighboring regions.

I won't be happy unless I ride into Orlais on a sickly yellowish horse and my father's old sword to join the Queen's guard.

If I could accidently run into members of that guard, (at least three of them) and challenge them to duels in the process, that would be even better. Of course the duels should be interrupted by the arrival of the Templars.

I would prefer the Shepard option.
Really I'm hoping a option to play as a old veteran will be given.

I like starting out as an innocent :) To me that makes the character more endearing, and I can sympathize with him/her more.

Wait, did you steal that from The Three Musketeers? And for the record, I posted that before actually reading the second line.

Haha! Awesome - I support this only if you can deck your characters out in over sized puss in boot boots and a big floppy hat with a feather.

I don't mind.

Though if we're going to become some sort of big cheese in this Inquisition thing, it might make sense to start out with a bit more experience and prestige than is common in RPGs. Like Shepard does.

Definitely this.

I think a good starting point for a character as an Inquisitor might be something to the affect of San Dan Glokta (and not just because he is an inquisitor.)

But someone who was a wealthy, intelligent, capable, noble - who was captured by the enemy, tortured, changed etc. Not to the extreme that he was - but it would allow a character to have a set backstory - but give the player a total blank slate to re-create that character.

I´d rather play as a rookie. Unless you were playing a NG+, it´s weird how pathetic Shepard was for an elite of the elite soldier.

Unremarkable peasant.

Any greatness exhibited by the PC should be my doing, and not handed to me to start the game.

I personally prefer this as well.  Though it does get a little complicated with a mage PC, since at least in the lore, one mage can kick the ass of a lot of people, even as a rookie.

It's fun watching a character grow and evolve and discover his/her own strength.

However preset the protagonist is in the game, I want more control over the tone and personality my PC expresses...

With that, I'd be happy...

If the Inquisition is anything like the old one, hopefully I have the ability to at least abuse my position and power(whatever power it holds).

One trained mage can do that.  An untrained mage is as much a danger to himself as to others.  Let us start as that.

In fact, I would support BioWare making a DA game where we weren't allowed to be mages at all if it meant that a subsequent game would revolve around a mage PC starting in childhood.

That's true.  And it'd be an interesting roleplay experience, learning the difficult art of mastering magic rather than having it handed to us like in DA:O and DA2 with the mage protagonist.

Maybe a Elder Scrolls option?

Start off as a prisoner with a set of skills/background provided by the game. You are sorta a badass and how much so depends on choices.

The PC agrees to the mantle of Inqusitor and off and running you go :)

Maybe a psuedo-origin.
Instead of having an entire history and family and friends, just a brief overview of your character's current situation and then you're brought to a certain area. A commander or noble has been called in for a personal appointment, an apostate or street rat has been captured, etc. Basically to bring any character to the same starting area, though exact location may differ. Have an attack of some kind, your character proves themselves and gets appointed inquisitor.
Or something like that, you get the general idea, right?

Mass Effect backround style where you choose your history. Personal traits like family and such can remain consistent with the named protagonist but giving some life to the character can't hurt.

Whatever allows me to roleplay a character that can look at everyone and their problems and think to himself/herself "all these people are idiots, guess I'll go make a sandwich."
