Probably has been asked before a million times, but whatever, one more won't kill anyone (right?). For me, it has to be Final Fantasy. Played from FFIV to FFXIII-2 (except XI and XIV) and I admit that while some games were better than others (duh!), not even one has disappointed me so far.

So, in your opinion, what is the best video game franchise that has ever existed?

KotOR.

First game I ever played and first series to get me emotionally invested.

EDIT: Realized that KotOR isn't really a franchise. Pokemon then. Obvious, I know. Image IPB

Mario has a great history with the canon line up(1, 2, 3, World, 64, etc.), but the spin-offs ruin the possibility. Sonic is a similar story, but the main-styled games turned into a trainwreck. Final Fantasy is still great, though their earlier games will oft be considered the better overall. Same deal with Zelda. Castlevania is all over the place. The issue is most game franchises eventually peter out during the later years.

Is there a game quantity minimum for the conditions of 'franchise'?

I'll throw a bone into the gears of the popular answers, and say Rock Band.

Wouldn't really know. 3+ games? However, do feel free to list the one lone game that tops everything else if you wish, that works too.

I'm going to have to say either EA's old Crusader franchise, or X-Com. I loved the heck out of those.

I loved the original Fallout games, even Brotherhood of Steel. I like Fallout 3 okay, but have never been able to finish it. I've purchased New Vegas but haven't played it yet. So, as a franchise, it's good, but not great, and certainly not "best," in my opinion.

I got into the earlier Ultima games very well, as well as Ultima Underworld, but stopped at around Ultima 6. Also, if you want the Ultima franchise, you're going to have to include the last couple of single-player Ultima games, which, by all accounts, weren't great. So, again, good, not great, and to me, not "best."

I never got into Total War. I just don't have the patience to issue orders and wait for the phalanx to get the order, issue it, and perform those orders in "realistic" time. I'm the kind of gamer who wants an "awesome button," where you issue and order or perform an action and you get instant (or really quick) feedback. It's the thing I dislike the most about Crusader Kings right now--the waiting. I guess I'm just not as strategic as some gamers. :)

I don't know about best ever, but I got so many damn hours out of Wing Commander.  Main series plus Privateer and Wing Commander: Armada as well.

My personal favourite will always be Monkey Island.
Save the 3D one. That one sucked.

Heh, do I have the plan for you.

Start the game, orient the map until you're over the Byzantine Empire.  Slowly advance the date until a huge chunk of it goes away and becomes the Sultanate of Rum.  Now pick Byzantium and try not to repeat history.  The history where the country you just picked gets eaten alive. There won't be much waiting in that game.

Alternatively - this will be even more action packed - advance until the Kingdom of Jerusalem appears.  Play them, and try not to get completely overrun.

That is, if you're interested in giving a more hectic run of CK2 a go.  But it's probly a longshot at this point, if I follow you correctly.

Uncharted and Pokemon are honestly the only series I can honestly say haven't disappointed me too badly at any point.

Huh, both your experience with the franchise and overall opinion of it are practically almost the same as mine. Yeah, I'd put FF up there.

Contenders would be Zelda and Metal Gear (save for the long ass cutscenes I've never heard anyone be truly dissapointed in any of the games). Metroid too, though Other M kind of brings it down sadly.

Monkey Island is one of the main reason why I love videogames, I played the first 3 at least a dozen times.

Does Indiana Jones count as a franchise? Because I liked The Infernal Machine and The Emperor's Tomb, even with the complete change of genre, and The Fate of Atlantis is still one of my favourite games ever.

Hard to say, I loved StarCraft, Brood War, and StarCraft II's multiplayer, but not so much StarCraft II's campaign. The characters didn't seem as deep, the dialogue was jarringly corny, and the reasoning behind most of the mission objectives was simply preposterous. There was this one where the star that the planet you're on is orbiting suddenly goes supernova, and you have to outrun the sunlight as the planet rotates.

I liked all 4 of the Fallout franchise's main games, but I didn't really like any of them as much as I liked the original StarCraft.

I guess I'll go with Metroid, because despite Other M, that's the series that has produced the greatest number of titles that I have wholeheartedly enjoyed.

Halo has never let me down.
Metal Gear Solid series has been mostly awesome.
Shenmue might only have two games and a story that will never get finished but those two games were amazing.
I've only actually played two Elder Scrolls games(three if you count about twenty minutes of Morrowind) but they are two of the best games I've ever played.

I do hold out hope for Resident Evil and Final Fantasy to return to former glories, but unfortunately that's not how the games industry is going.
