Maybe a dumb question -- I have stuff (gems, weapons, etc) I want to sell -- I see in the FAQ's/walkthrus there are lists of what stores SELL what and for how much, and Dan Simpson's mentions which stores buy items, but I have noticed that particular stores only buy certain types of items and not others.   Is it as simple as stores buying the types they sell, or is there no pattern to it?

It's not as simple as that. In broad terms you would expect shops that sell things to buy the same sorts of things, but that's not always true - temples in particular will not buy anything. I think the magic shops (High Hedge and eastern area of Baldur's Gate) are probably the ones that buy the greatest range of equipment.

Yes, those magic shops buy a lot of stuff. Ulgoth's Beard Inn is also good.

In my mod setup, there is only one vendor in the game that will buy potions: one of the two outside merchants at Nashkel Carvival (in the "arena" by the shopping tents).

Everything that Officer Vai in Jovial Juggler, Beregost (from Ch 3 onwards), buys should be sold to her. Maximum price and no depreciation. From Ch 4 and onwards, if you visit her without a bandit scalp, she will give you +1 Rep and leave. Therefore, I keep a bandit scalp in the barrel outside Jovial Juggler, so I can sell her stuff for the rest of the game. She buys:
- bandit scalps
- winter wolf pelts
- wyvern heads (but sell one of them to Kelddath Ormlyr for double price)
- idol of Kozah
- butter knife of Balduran
- lock of hair from Kirinhale
- bowl of water elemental control (if you didn't take it to Tenya)

Thanks for some fine tips. I did know about the scalps & wyvern head (edit: and the winterwolf pelts), but didn't yet know it's a good place to sell those particular unique items. There's always something new to learn about Baldur's Gate!
