Well, I am ready to use a cheat code here. I can't win the battle no matter what I try. I have my human warrior character, Alister, Morrigan and Liliana: and I am dead in the water -- or caverns in this case. I have only Winter Grasp to try and hold Kolgrem and I cannot toggle between Morrigan using her spells and my character attacking the two mages and archers. It seems virtually impossible to me at this point.  Does anyone out there no a cheat code to get me past this Quest? Or, how to set up the tactics precisely to aid in the battle? Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, where the hell can I find a PDF manual of the game, since my games is a downloaded version? Thanks.

Another way:

Be ambiguous in your dialogue, but tell Korgrim that you will pour the blood into the ashes. Leliana and Wynne won't and wouldn't leave you (yet). When you get up to the ashes, just take a pinch (you can walk away without pouring the blood). Korgrim will be waiting outside to confront you for lying, but he'll only have 2 melee guards near him. There will be a Mage, Drake and Archer up ahead, but they will not help him initially when he attacks you.

Not only does this make it easier, but it's also slightly more XP. He will still drop the Horn to summon the High Dragon too.

62! wow! :o

Anyway, try something along these lines:

Equip Alistair with a shield. Don't worry about his damage, his role is just to suck it up and keep Kolgrim occupied. Run him forward and use taunt and the melee enemies should stick to him. Have him take Rock Salve or anything that will boost his survivability. Force Field is an excellent alternative, if you've got it. Keep him using potions.

Have your warrior run to one of the mages and use a stun/knockdown skill on him. Then keep him there until the mage dies.

Have Leli use Arrow of Slaying/Critical shot on the other mage. Then keep her on him until the mage dies.

Have Morrigan use Winter's Grasp on Leli's mage. If you do NOT have Force Field and Alastair's life is whittling away, have her use Cone of Cold on the melee enemies or whatever crowd control spells you've got on.

At this point, one of the mages (or both) should have died and you can concentrate fire on the other mage or go to the melee. Pick off the weaker enemies first and leave Kolgrim for last. Then focus fire and talent/spell spam him until he dies.

Also note, if you've got any bombs/flasks, now would be the time to use them. Excellent AoE damage. You can use them to take a mage out quickly or AoE the melees attacking Alastair. Hope this helps. :D

Being 63 I know what you are saying about the memory problems. I have a lot of trouble remembering to use the spacebar to pause and use tactics and potions. Being used to turn based combat this real time combat with pause is a slow learning curve. I don't try to tackle Kolgrim until I have done Honleath, the Warden's Keep and the Mage Tower. By then my team is up tp the challenge and the fight is more manageable.

As a warrior I use Leliana (Archer), Wynne and Dog (Mage Killer) as my team. Dogmeat is set up to charge and take care of the mages.

Actually, there is a far easier way to do this fight.
Tell him you'll taint the ashes. Proceed to the Ashes and don't taint them! Once you come out, Kolgrim will say it doesn't seem to be done, then you fight him. This time, the mages arn't there, just him and a couple warriors. (Well, I believe the Mages are there, but they're away a bit with a Drake and don't get involved).

I actually just completed this yesterday after an ultimate fail the first time I tried.
In my party: Morrigan, Alistair, Lelliana, me (dual dagger rogue)
(no healer)

Anyways, right when battle starts hit PAUSE so you can tell each person what to do.
1. Alistair - Taunt
2. Morrigan - casted Blizzard (this always seems to work well, even though it damages my group too)
3. Me (rogue) - sent to kill the mages
4. Lelliana - ranged the mages

(rogue and Lel took out mages fairly quickly)

Once Blizzard is cast I kept pausing Morrigan to:
1. Cone of Cold - Freeze Kolgrim and the other 2 fighters
2. Sleep and Waking nightmare all of them

Once mages were down (which was easier than I thought it would be) taking out the other guys was easy. Also, after each cast or attack I usually pause quickly to make sure everyone's health is above 50% and that everyone is targeting/fighting the right mobs. Sometimes the tactics and rules screw this up for you.

Keep Kolgrim stunned/bashed/frozen and it all works out pretty good.

Blizzard is great for knocking enemies to the floor and constant damage. I don't mind the friendly fire with it since it seems to affect the enemies much more than my party.

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before, and its kind of a spoiler but here's what I did: After Kolgrim wiped the floor with my party like 8 times...I caved and decided to say I'll help him defile the Ashes, THEN I didn't defile the ashes, hoping I could get away with lying to Kolgrim. He was waiting for me at the exit of the cave BUT he only had 2 mercenaries with him. The fight was still hard but much easier without the two mages in the back

I know its not much in the sense of battle tactics, but its an alternative (that's not cheating) which gives you an easier battle against Kolgrim.
