I'm currently plaything through Awakening and I can't help but notice that almost all the really good massive armors are not part of a set. I would also like to point out that all of the 'unique' armors look the same, just with a different color scheme.

I really don't see any excuse for not having matching sets of armor. This was also a problem in Dragon Age 2. It was difficult for me to find matching sets and would often have to go from merchant to merchant until I found something that at least looked similar, but it still wasn't a matching set.

When I asked Wade to make me a set of Golem's Might, I was not only disappointed in the fact that it was just the breast plate, but also that it looked no different than standard armor. I thought for sure it would look closer to a golem or have something that makes it stand out. Turns out, it's just a color swap, and again, not even a complete set. Posted Image

Well..... it was just an expansion pack with only 4 month development time.

I don't really see the attraction of armour sets personally.

Depends on your funding.
In Origins, your rag-tag bunch of misfits is running around with whatever they can throw on.
In Awakening, you have your own smith, so sets should not be as much of an issue. I agree, the golem shell should have made a complete set.
In DA2, each class got one set of armor per year, plus a legacy set.
I actually prefer no armor sets. Otherwise, I feel obligated to equip a set and won't change for better armor unless it's a complete new set.

As for uniqueness, how many sets of armor do you want? Most armor is made in a specific fashion. and follows the same basic mold. However, I will agree that truly unique armor deserves its own form(Golem shell again).

I like having armor were the color and style match.

And yet, DA:O was literally bursting with unique Warrior armor sets.

Kind of annoying, to be honest. For a Rogue.

DA2 had a bunch of unique matching sets for all three classes, without mentioning the item packs or the story DLCs (though I believe the story DLCs used reskins). DAO had more matching sets if you were a high strength character (though most of those were reskins too) and barely anything for a character who didn't have high strength.

Awakening did have some nice matching sets but, again, mainly massive plate, and possibly also reskins.

Rogue?bah Mages got the short end of the stick in both games.

Being an Arcane Warrior helped a  little in the wardrobe department.

Don't forget about Venture in Awakening. That went well with Fleet Feet and Stormchaser Gauntlets, but no actual set bonus.

I do like armor sets, though perhaps they were a bit overdone in Origins. A decent selection would be nice just so the player doesn't lag in armor rating too much in between sets, like in DA2.

Well yeah.

I've been playing SWTOR lately and there's a feature that allows you to match the color of any of your armor pieces to that of the chest piece. I hope to see something like this in DA3.

I wish people would learn what literally means. The game is not literally bursting with anything.

Well one thing that I think would work for armor is to implement the same mechanic bioware used in Swtor. Being able to tie the armor in to have the same color scheme. That would be nice.

Pretty much. DAO had its lame-o armors, but DA2 was teeming with them.

If you wear a whole set, you get some bonus. However, most of the time the bonus wasn't worth tracking down the set. You could piece together stronger items littered throughout the game. And I agree that the rogue armor in DAO was kinda boring. But that's ok, it was their first attempt at it. I think the armor in DA2 looked a little better. But I dunno... after playing Dragon's Dogma, I am completely spoiled with the aesthetics of armor. DD had some of the coolest/most unique armor and weapons. Capcom knew how to design some serious gear.
