*Sigh.

A fade to black is fine, there is no need for pixel nudity.

I really thought Isabella's love scene was awesome and handled well. (Throwing knives and stuff was awesomesaucex100%) Fade to black was fine too for that. Racey and character appropriate beats pixelated genitals in my book.

I've seen that sentiment expressed before.  In that case, the player held the opinion that who someone was as a person was immutable, so if they'd ever been capable of the things Revan did, then the PC must also be capable of those things.  That player found Torment similarly limiting.

I found KotOR2 limiting, because the PC should have known about his past (but the player didn't - Atris accusing the Exile of wrongdoing would have been a far better scene if the player had had any idea what she was talking about), but any game where the PC's personality is entirely mine to shape as I see fit is very nearly the perfect game.

I'm not very well..."read" when it comes to RPGs--the Bioware ones are pretty much the only ones I've played (ouside of TES games and FF games, which in all honestly don't really fit all that well under the RPG label in my eyes) so I don't really know anything about Planetscape: Torment and KotOR 2. Hopefellu I'll find out one day.

Anyway, I guess it comes down to personal priorities--little surprise there I suppose.

Here's a thought: if good love scenes are limited by the engine or just look ridiculous, why not depict them through graphic novel panels or something similar to that? We already have something like this in DAO (intro) or DA2 (Varric's storytelling) and with the right art style, they could work better than any awkward sex scene. The first Max Payne game did it and it worked quite well as a storytelling device. Adapting the technique to the Dragon Age universe should be possible.

What do you guys think?

Sometimes you have to wonder why some think it is more psychologically scarring to see a sideboob, than to see a person horribly murdered, raised as a zombie, and then proceed to eat his former comrades....

I rather liked ME3's scene with Liara. It was tasteful, yet not too prudish. Very well done (and excellent music, as well).

a tasteful love scene is just a opinion what some people call tasteful others may call it vulgar this is a pointless argument there is never going to be a world wide consensus.

well, that scene was ok, but it could have been better (and more real) with a little more illumination (dimmed lights instead of almost none) and a little more being shown (no, it does not need to become hardcore - also, i would not mind...why? because even that can be done tastefully IMHO and it would get the mood of the characters across even better!)

but yeah, it was ok...but with the new engine etc. they should strive to do loads better and they can (i am sure not all of the people working at bioware are prudes (sorry, some people here are so old fashioned in their views...hell, i would like to know who has been teaching you views as outdated as that?...sorry if i am really progressiv in this, it's just that i live in europe and europeans are mostly non prudes because we threw that stuff out years ago (student movements of 1968 and such!)...and i am really glad i never got tought such views...)

I would rather have fade to black then horrible scenes of people humping in underwear. I still think the ME1 scenes where tasteful, the characters where nude but you never actually saw the parts that would cause them to worry about having their rating bumped up, it was the type of thing you would see in a PG movie or on regular late night television.

I think something like Mass Effect 1 sex scenes would be perfect.

Not showing anything is a bad idea because it cuts the immersion.

And explicit sex would be a little weird (like witcher 2)...

Like many comments above, the important thing is that the developers treat sex with maturity.

My personal preference would be for something less than TW2 but slightly more than ME1. However obviously ME1 style love scenes would be quite the huge step forward (ironicly, by going backward) at this point. Its quite shocking what TW2 was able to get away with, and it was rather a bit much, but the scene with Triss was beautiful, something like that is the best of TW2, just like the Liara/FemShep lovescene of ME1 which is certainly the best Bioware love scene I've ever seen. If TW2 had a character creator so you could play as a female character, and that Triss scene were toned down just a tad, that would be the new gold standard for RPG love scenes. So long as you aren't going too far, going far enough is much better than the absurdities of the 'love scenes' in DA2, where the characters are fully clothed, or in ME3 where there's a shower scene and once again, both characters are clothed, IN the shower. Stuff like that is so insane, I don't understand how anybody could ever think its a good idea. So the bottom line is, don't go too far, but don't be just insanely prudish either, there's plenty of room for a happy middle ground.

Assuming there are sex cutscenes; you don't need to show anything at all but please work with camera angles instead of putting underwear on. Samantha's romance scene in ME3 comes to mind, having her keep her underwear while taking a shower felt particularly out of place.

The lesbian shower scene in ME3 is one of the stupidest, most cringe worthy, outright rubbish scenes ever. It's so far beyond ridiculous that I'm surprised somebody gave it a green light.

I can take or leave love scenes but if you're going to have them, at least do them properly. I think ME1 got them pretty much spot on, sadly, Bioware have been regressing ever since in their ability to create a decent love scene.

Well, I personally think that the love scene in ME1 was really well done. Hot, but without "creepy looks". I enjoyed watching it. But in DAO I didn't found it so enjoyable. In other hand in DA2 there were lighter moments (like with Fenris in hall).
I understand why you hate clothes, but every sex starts with clothes on, right? And I think the "shower" in ME3 is simple. She is showering in Shepard's room, so she can keep her underwear, because she is feeling nervous and Shepard then came to her with full clothes on... what's so strange about it? Later Shepard will undress, but that is their privacy. :) But yeah, I get it why it looks ridiculously, but I will forgive them.
I simply love their games.

I don't get why we can't have both?

For example, I'd expect a mind-meld type sexual experience with an Asari such as Liara to be tasteful, smooth and classy. Or with a virginial type such as Merril to be the same.

However, I'd expect to rag Jack & Isabella seven ways from sunday and actually think that Bioware would be doing them a dis-service if it were any different. Spanking, face-spitting, whips, chains etc. - it would fit with the right character

Or they could play it the other way where the quite ones are the worse, and the likes of Jack need a bit of love.

Either way, "tasteful" should be based on the character and not a blanketed requirement for every romance in the game.

It's the americans (and similar people i would call prudes!) IMHO - they subscribe to zombies (catholic church or similar) but not to sex (church does not either - except for reproductive purposes (and not for its' "own" people like priests, monks, nuns etc.))

it is so bad to repress/restrict something so natural, it just makes me sad!

Sometimes you have to wonder why some think it prudent to completely pass over any relevant discussion that has taken place and instead prop up strawmen based on tired stereotypes and baseless assumptions.

It is so bad to repress genuine discussion, it just makes me sad!

Please god, no.

I don't care if sex scenes are graphic, but I really, really do not want them delving into specific fetishes. I don't find any of this stuff even remotely sexy, I find spitting to be particularly disgusting in any context. Such a scene would forever turn me off playing that game ever again.

I'm not saying spitting specifically, I just mean that Bioware shouldn't feel restricted to doing either tasteless or non-tasteless scenes. For me the scenes should fit the character and I think the game would be more interesting as a whole, and more believeable, if characters such as Isabella (who have obviously been around a bit, in both terms of the world and sexual partners) weren't then portrayed as innocent virgins in "tasteful" the love scenes, as it makes no sense against the backdrop of their backstory.

A female pirate captain who spends months away with a crew full of men, who has a reputation as a bag, and who also sleeps with women too suddenly layed down in front of a log fire and "made love" to beautifully? It's just not in keeping with the character and would water the game down IMO.

There can be romantic love scenes for those looking for love with a soft, tender dear such as Merrill, however, there should be more graphic "disgusting" sex for those who are looking for that too. It doesn't have to be extreme, sick or OTT, it should however show/imply enough to be in keeping with the character.

I'm fine with a fade-to-black, especially if it avoids uncanny-valley awkward animations that are more risible than erotic. There's something to be said for leaving what happens next to the imagination. That said, I am not opposed to nudity per se. It's always looked a bit silly when someone has presumably been having a post-coital snooze and then they sit up in bed with full underwear on. I recall this happening in DA2 with Fenris and also with the Cousland origin in DA:O.

That is why I prefer da2's approac to the others. Isabella litteraly jumps Hawke, and then there is the knife 'undressing', Fenris is is little more wild and I think it was suppossed to be spur of the moment. Anders and Merrill are romantic and tender, all fitting with their personalities.

I don't mind they fade to black during the moments which are difficult to animate. I will rather not see it if it is going to be as akward and weird as da:o.
