I think DA2's dry humping like having a fit was tacky and plain stupid. You don't have to have full body naked scenes but showing revealed breasts or naked buttocks during the climax of an ingame relationship where moved onto sex should not be ran away from by developers. At least not in a mature game. You should not fade to black and leave it to the imagination as that shows disrespect to the fanbase by implying they are not mature enough to handle it or an admission you do not have the ability or talent to create the content very well.

Now this does not mean you have to go full on porn situation but stop with the double standards. You have shown breasts on monsters yet afraid to show naked ones on companions and resort to dry humping scenes, lop off heads with gushing blood and chopping off limbs at will yet afraid of sexual content for characters (as for combat if you applied the same restriction on that then combat in DA would be bashing monsters with rubber mallets and no blood).

The characters should be naked in sex, use the camera to hide the genitals but don't have them all wearing clothes or fading to black. Thats not mature, thats fear of what people will think of you like Fox News or admission you have not got the talent to create such scenes. I personally do not care about romance much in DA but even I can see your fear of tackling the content and see how badly you handle it. ME1 did better, TW2 did it well. DA2 was shockingly bad.

Another difference for that is that stuff like that is more caricature. If we were to depict combat in a more realistic way, it'd probably be a rather unsettling thing as well. Probably moreso than a sex scene as well.

But I don't think people are asking for caricature style sex scenes... :P

Realistic combat. Wow that'd be like a SAW movie but worse. Specially with the magic and burning people alive/flash freezing them thing. And the screaming. Now I have to consciously try not to imagine what DA would be like with realistic combat.

I don't know what game you played, but there was no dry humping in DA2. There was no humping at all in DA2, it would always fade to black before anything was shown. DAO was the game that had the awful dry humping in clothes.

I think I need to make two new "Godwin's Law"s. The first will relate to the inevitability of a comparison to The Witcher. The second will relate to the inevitability of the "LOLDUMBAMERICANS" comment.

Not to mention that Morrigan's suddenly wearing a bra even though she doesn't wear one in her regular outfit.

That was a problem in ME3 too -- not dry humping, but characters wearing clothing they shouldn't be, for the scene to make sense. The infamous shower scene, for instance.

Looking at ME3, I thought that maybe the scenes had been designed around doing different versions -- they would have looked much more normal if the underwear disappeared. Like maybe they were going to sell R-rated in Europe and PG in the USA?

Best solution ever here!
Give the players an option at start to either have fade to black to interactive sex minigames!

Well, we are kinda dumb about this subject.

Only if you feel your maturity is constantly under assault would you perceive a fade to black as an attack on your maturity, I think.

I guess correct way to put it is DAO they had dry humping, DA2 they (implied) dry humping.

Best to worst way to handle it goes from TW2>ME1 or ME3>DAO>ME2>DA2. (imho) Though I did not romance every character so did not see every scene in every game. But from ones I did see this is from best to worst handling the subject and content.

Can't we just make all future Bioware love scenes like Liara's in ME3?

I didn't see ME2 as being all that bad at this. They faded to black at the right places. OK, some of them were staged in silly places.

Nudity = Mature

When will people lose this mindset?

Though I agree there are some love scenes in mass effect and dragon age that look silly.

Do you close your eyes during sex and use your imagination to pretend your doing something else often then? Fade to black as a replacement for scenes is fear of how you will be percieved or lack of talent in being able to craft those scenes well. Now you do not have to have entire long sequences of those scenes but you should not go from a kiss > hug > having clothing on dry humping > fade to black > laying in bed. Thats just silly and what my issue with the way the DA team have handled it recently.

Personally, I don't care about nudity as much as I care about the actual love-scene being PRESENT.

To clarify: The love-scenes in Mass Effect 3 were absolutely PERFECT... the ones that were present, at least. Ashley, Liara, and Kaidan all showed immense personality and life in their love-scenes (like Ashley's playful tug on manShep's briefs!) which made them sexy and enjoyable to watch, all without showing any naughty bits. Compared to that, the love-scenes that just showed a kiss and a fade-to-black (like Steve's love-scene) really seem second-rate.

So, nudity? Eh, I'll take it or leave it. But personality and an actual glimpse of intimacy in my love-scenes before the fade to black? Yes, please!

I think this is one of those situations where things just looked awkward with the characters in their underwear. It didn't feel like it was smooth.

I think it could have been done much better like the Liara scene in ME3. No actual nudity has to be done (though I think her butt was shown so minimal nudity then) for it to be good.

Ensure that the player can feel the emotion of the scene. Not the lust, but the romance and beauty of it.

Okay, so I just youtubed that ME3/Liara romance scene. I've never seen it b4 now. I heard it was pretty good, tho.

And it was. It was a great scene. No nipples, or willies flopping about. Liara was naked...but some nice camera angles veiled it.

The biggest reason I liked that scene w/Liara was because it showed physically intimate Loving moments. The hugs and squeezes and kisses. There was no grinding and outlandishness.

It was sensual, not explicit. The issue I have w/fade to black is that it takes most of those moments away. You see the one kiss and fade to black. You get nothing of those sensual moments. The physical expression of how your PC and the NPC feel about each other.

Oh, wow, and liara had these biotic, swirly whisp things...swirling around her while she was making love w/Shep...it was quite beautiful actually. That one lil detail..bam! Adds so much to the Feeling.

So, for me, yes...tasteful nudity in the love scenes, plz. Think sensual, not explicit. Tastefully show the desire and passion. The love between these 2 characters.

Don't you think killing other human beings should be a little unsettling, even in a video game? It's a role playing game so we should feel what our character would feel, and killing people willy nilly with no emotional impact seems... wrong. If the combat were more brutally realistic and had a sense of urgency to it I think it would make for an incredible game. Cleaving a man's arm off and hearing him scream as blood spurts out, for example, should fill us with a sense of dread and not satisfaction.

I agree somewhat. The Last of Us is looking excellent in that aspect, and I would like if more games started to handle violence in a more believable way.

But not all games have to do it like that.

The fade to black doesn't imply anything other than sex. If you were imagining something else, that wasn't the game's doing.

Fade to black as a replacement for scenes is fear of how you will be percieved or lack of talent in being able to craft those scenes well.

...Or, they just felt it wasn't necessary to show. We all know what sex looks like. It only becomes about maturity if you make it about maturity.

@Raging_Bull:

Actually, I think what most people are saying is:

Being unusually uncomfortable with sex and nudity = not mature.

====

That being said - I am a proponent of Fade to Black - because I don't feel that any game has ever handled romances properly.

As a storytelling device it should be an impetus for the main protagonist to take some form of action - not just additional dating sim material.

It's not so much that nudity equals maturity (As most gross-out comedies display), it's that Dragon Age hasen't held back in all other realms (violence, drug use, and other stuff mentioned on my first post), but nudity is somehow too much for anyone 17 and older.

If you're not going to handle these scenes the way they should be, then why put them in at all? I'd even be happy with a fade to black like in ME2. But wearing underwear during and after sex?  Underwear in the shower? Underwear on characters that clearly aren't wearing a bra when clothed? Liara, desire demons, broodmothers, and banshees can be nude, but not humans?

And if this is a technological issue, then why are there dozens of mods out there that do the exact same thing that Bioware couldn't do?

I just want consistency in this regard, the rest is up to the writers and developers.

I'm glad we've established that eating scenes are also not necessary in an RPG and can simply be implied. =]
