Please be aware that developers often name a low-ball card such as a Geforce 6600 GT to suck in more buyers, but the real fact is that a 7600 GT or 6800 Vanilla is actually the practical minimum, which leaves the weak 7600 GS way back in the rear.
You just can't expect much in the way of good-looking or quick animation from such an old and slow card.

Yes...it definitely plays fine for a while and then slows down. I'll check into the heat issue. As far as the CPU, it is constantly at 100% when I play DAO. I don't know what I can do about that right now though.
Well, sounds to me like you're experiencing what a fair amount of other players are suffering as well. so, less an inadequate hardware issue and more a game engine issue.
Slowdowns and long load times after a given period of play time (varies with the PC). Some people attribute it to the over used catch all phrase of "memory leak" but whatever it is, it bogs the system down to a crawl at points and can only be alleviated by a game restart. Counter to the memory leak argument, I have never had the game lock up or crash on me, however I have had to wait out 2-4 minute loading screens.
Other plausible theories: save game bloat and poor garbage collection.

Mine seems to do this more frequently when I have built up a lot of save games.
Gets better when I delete all the unnecessary ones.
Also happens more frequently when I keep a lot of sustainable effects on so I don't have to spend the first three rounds of combat turning them all on.

I can't even play before it freezes. Then it goes away, I'm happy and if I'm lucky it takes 1 minute before it freezes again. A great game, but I can't play!

Here's a topic by 4aces that describes the possible savegame bloat issue:
http://social.biowar...58/index/494745
It's more to do with what and how the save game is being "saved" than actual number of saved games.
Also, a post of mine with a link to a good write up on hardware performance...

How do I know what is considered too hot for my CPU? Is there a general standard?
I start to get worried when my CPU temp goes over 60ºC and my video card goes past 80ºC.
